Title: THIS IS MY PATCH.
Post by: geefree on February 15, 2008, 12:35:22 pm
Dropped some leaflets last night,..

Got a phone call not long after, from a window cleaner, who politely told me i was dropping leaflets on his patch and it just is not right !

After speaking to him for 5 mins, i realised it was my old window cleaner, who had advised me when i first started,...... to leaflet drop !

If i had to think about wether a w/c works in any given area, i simply would not get any at all delivered.

Why do people insist its their patch, when there are different window cleaners nipping in and out of every area.?

I have had leaflets in my own letterbox, and they have walked right past my van with my brush sticking out..... to deliver, it does not bother me at all, we are all trying to work.

and if the quality of his work is any good then why should he worry about me,

also i leaflet drop ,to hit people who dont have a window cleaner,

not to steal work.

How come everyone on this forum agrees that we can deliver anywhere and no-one owns any area....... yet we still get a call now and then from someone who doesnt agree, .....  so they are out there ,or maybe here ..........are any you on this forum the type of people , who strongly object to people dropping leaflets in an area where you work.... and why?

Cheers.

Gary.

Nobody owns an area you are free to canvass any area you like however if you know a window cleaner does a particular job then as a courteous window cleaner and out of respect for the other window cleaner i would stay away from that job and move on to the next one their is plenty of work

You can also canvass any commercial work you like as i feel different unwritten rules apply here commercial is always up for grabs but not at any price
I await the snide and rude comments

out of politeness i will stay clear, but how far afield is one mans area., whats to say he wont ring again saying , you at the other side of town and i do them also... lol.

the reason i wont canvas that particular area again, is out of respect... but if i get any more calls from anyone else my attitude will change and i will canvas where i want.

Explain to him that you are not trying to take any work from him but you are running a business and need more work so will be canvassing different areas until you have enough work and he cannot expect you to not go out and get more work or would he rather you sat at home having him pay his taxes over to you

I wouldn't.
There is not such as thing as anyones patch.

You can work where you like.

That would make me more determined to get a lot of customers in that area.

Myself i don't uncut anyone i used to leaflet regular and do not pinch other window cleaners work.

When i used to do loads of leaflets it did not bother the other window cleaners as i got to know most of them and they knew i was not after any of there work.
But you don't know what houses have a window cleaner so just leaflet everything.

I have now decided that it is a good idea having your own patch.

To all window cleaners, let it be known that the area from John O Groats to Lands End is my patch, if you are working anywhere in this area, please stop immediately.

If you want to work in this area then you can purchase a license to do so, please forward me your bank details, so I can empty it straight away.  ;D ;D ;D

When I started my first part time round, many years ago in Chichester, I had a knock at the door and when I answered it this chap asked me if I was a window cleaner, when I said yes he through a punch at me, which I ducked and shoved him off my doorstep. It turned out that I had canvassed some of his customers.  >:(

never had such leaflet ever, maybe because i dont live in an affluent area. Maybe sometimes window cleaners go out targeting the more affluent customers and forget the rest.

i am about to get some more flyers done and this time i am having the same bottom line printed on them that one of my mates has...."IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A WINDOW CLEANER AND ARE HAPPY WITH THE SERVICE HE PROVIDES PLEASE IGNORE THIS LEAFLET" he cant really argue with that and if his customers aint happy then they might just decide to drop him.Whether you like it or not there is no such thing as "your patch" or "my patch" just "a patch" :)

Nowhere but in window cleaning do you find such soppy sentiment. Are we in business or not?
If one of my customers was to tell, me that the window cleaner that does her offiice charged £300, and I knew I could do the job in a day, I would tell her that I could do it for £250. I don't care who the other guy is, I'm in business for mysellf and family. That's called competition, and makes sound business sense. All this honour among window cleaners thing is misguided, and downright stupid.
Call me what you like, but at least I'm honest. Dai

You see I couldnt have said that without an outburst of nonsense from some members of the forum.

(But I agree with you 100%)

imo there is no such thing as undercutting i just give my price and thats it,so if i am cheaper than the other guy then i am, its not personal , its just business.By same token i dont drop my prices to get work(im cheap enuff already ;D) and when prospective new cust says those immortal words......"THE LAST BLOKE DID IT FOR LESS THAN THAT" i say "well you better ring him up and ask him to come back then love" and walk away :)

Used to get this all the time twenty odd years ago. Seems to have died out round here now, there are so many window cleaners that nobody has a "patch" any more.

You can understand how someone can feel threatened if you are leafletting his customers but if I phoned up every WC that leafletted in my area I would never be off the phone.

I would just carry on, as I have said before this is business not the boy scouts.
