Title: my crap ad
Post by: Mike Halliday on February 11, 2008, 03:15:27 pm
just got a good deal on an ad on the front page of our local paper, this is whats going in this week ( did'nt have time to do anything flash) just thought I'd go for the same photo I use on my van, leaflet & yellow pages to increase my local presence, I want this photo of me to be constantly seen in my area so its imprinted on peoples minds

got the space for ever at a good price £60 a week

its a crap ad but I was in a hurry

Nowt wrong with that Mike. Got the offer for the draw, tells em what you do, the photo for the trust and your on the front page. What more do you need. £60 is very good for the front page of any rag.

Is it Shaun you waving to?

Not bamboozling with too much content there - suprised a bit you showing a rotary though?

Whats the spec of that Mike?
and what do you use along with it?

Joe, me & shaun are always waving to each other :) he's just a copycat, he wanted to use me on his website because he's a bit ugly, but I said no

the rotory is just to add interest.

Showing an open hand goes back to when we were cave men and shows we have no weapon.

Our brains are still hard wired somehow to see it as a non threatening gesture.

Therefore hands behind the back are bad news.

Hands in pockets means you have itchy balls.

the photo had to be squashed to fit the ad, in real life I'm much taller, slimmer and better looking.

and for some strange reason squashing the  photo has made it look like my hair has fallen out :-\ :-\

The ladies will love it though Billy "oh he's so sensitive". Agree with the flymo comment though. You might get a few grass cutting enquiries. Would hate to clean your waste tank out.

I am the taller thinner better looking and may I add a lot younger version of that squashed up advert!

I wave my hand to show that there is nothing in my pockets ;D

As for the advert I think it will do well because there are no prices or no anything, I think you'll get calls just to claim £10 off out of the 'interest factor'.

carpetworx( whats your first name?) it goes in on Friday, I really don't think its a good ad but with the size of it anything else would just get lost in the newstext of the page, at least a photo will attract the eye of the reader.

The worst responce ever to a paper advert was last October on the front page.  Two calls and thats it.

Cost me £400 hope you do better.

only delivered last night so no response yet, I'm doing it for 8 weeks before making a decision.

I always say about leaflets how people do a few 1000 then decide they don't work, even if I get no calls for a few weeks I'm still keeping it going, it needs a proper test.

didn't get any calls from it, but it was only the first week people might have seen it and thought I'll give him a ring on Monday but forgotten, but they will see it again on Saturday so it will remind them......hopefully :-\

Now thats what i like about Mike :D

Honest and to the point, a straight answer , I bet some on here would have been tempted to say ,Yes a great response, " booked in 5 jobs from it "  but as Mike has indicated  , time is an essecence.

I have done one off ads like Mikes and response was zero, they tend to want to see you in the paper night after night.

I agree with Geoff

Marketing does not always work first time.

What works for some does not work for others

The problem is you have got to do it.

If you have a shop you have to pay rent and staff and you might not get many customers on a  foggy day in Feb

Thats the great thing about marketing ........no one has the answers but everyone wants your money.
