Hi,
Got 10k double sided a5 leflets on there way, looking smart. So, when I pop these through 10k letterboxes over two or three evenings... :-\ , what response will I get on average please?
Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved
Dan
-
Put out 5k last June, Got 4 jobs
-
The going rate is 0.1% or 1 job in every thousand.
Shaun
-
Not a good time to leaflet that's for sure.
-
Dan where did you get your leaflets thanks Freddie
-
I find 3 jobs per thousand on average, if its not working tweak the design. Make it into something the customer will keep even if they dont want a cc right away. A quirky design or a discount maybe?
-
Just nipping out now 3hrs delivering myself. Do that 6 days a week and currently get 1-2 jobs booked/week. Although you could double that in Dec.
Not sure it's the best use of time.
-
How many do you do in 3 hrs, 500? 1-2 jobs for 3000 isn't great. send me your flyer for a 2nd opinion if you like, ill send you mine in return.. daveypower@hotmail.co.uk
-
Good for the old ticker all that walking a Mike :)
-
I wish i could put out 10,000 leaflets over 2 or 3 evenings, :o
that takes some doing, unless you have have adozen others helping you.
geoff
-
In 3 hrs I will do about 350 on the avereage. I do stop and talk with people (which sometimes yields a result) but the main thing is I'm doing the bigger houses and some have long and STEEP drives.
Yes keeps my endurance up but hard to keep my weight up.
My leaflet is a modified 3 for 2 by DPPrint. My response with the same leaflet was better in December.
Anyway picked up a £ 240 job for 4 beds HSL+protection. Did another quote just now for £220 for a 'care in the community' household. Girl who rang me was a bit naughty and didn't tell me. Luckily I'm pretty patient and eagle eyed so I will cope fine on the day.
Dave will do. ;)
-
Dan whats going to happen is you will join the 'leaflets don't work' brigade.
You've got 10,000 leaflets printed you'll get them put out and over the next 3 months. you'll get work from them....... but because you didn't get it all in the first 2 week of the delivery you'll think leaflets don't work
what you need to do is a sustained leaflet campaign of 15-20k a month for 6 months, going to the same houses every month, which should be no further than 4 miles from your home.
don;t do 10,000 leaflets and decide they don't work, 10k is a drop in the ocean
-
Mike
Doing a sustained campaign like that soon. How much would you suggest I pay someone per 1000. Keeping an eye out for someone doing locally so that I can grab them.
Pete
-
I pay £17/1000 put out with an A5 magazine with one other leaflet.
I wouldn't pay over £20/1000 but a lot depends on your average job price, if you clean cheap then your response has to be a lot higher, but if you are cheap put your prices on the leaflet.
best result I ever had was employing my own guy and got them put out by themselves, but doing it legally is expensive.
-
Pete
I started out paying my mate £30 a thousand working on an average of 130 an hour think that is a bit below legal minimum
This week I said do the roads with big houses and gardens been paying by the hour and the cost per thousand has gone through roof.
So this week I need to do very careful montoring as response rate is in Line with Shuans figure of 1 per thousand.
-
I understand, thanks Mike
-
I see what you mean Ian, £30 seems alot and if as you say you get the driveways then your talking much more but then I guess thats relative as long as you get the right conversions. From my point of view there is slightly more to it than that.
Where I live all the CCs (apart from one) drive old vans with tatty cartoon livery. No offence to anyone reading. So I want people to see me in my van and make a connection subliminal or otherwise. Much like Mike has said he is doing. It's particularly important for me in a new area so whilst the conversion is important the leaflets will support other types of advertising (web etc) at the same time. If as Shaun says I get 1 in a thousand and do 15000 a month thats 15 new custys per Month at an average job value of say £100 (just picked that figure out the air) so the return would be a good one and i get to build the base and support the other stuff.
Pete
-
Not many people like to show other cc's their leaflet design, anyone up for swapsys?
-
Have just emailed you mine Dave
-
Pete
Once we get past Feb I am hoping for a better response.
my current Leaflet is honest but with no specials
So I am going to readjust over the next two weeks.
The other alternitive is to promote another service at same time as I am the empolyer.
But i would not want to promote more than two or three products at same time
I do not want to go back to local paper distribution.
Better Polish van before CCDO Pete will be inspecting ;D ;D ;D
-
I should know my figures but I would guess I get 8-9 new customers a week from my leaflets and do 4500 a week, but this is after every house in my town receiving 75 of my leaflets over the last 7-8yrs
Mike
-
It's a real shame you can't make it this year Mike. You would have been invaluable. :P
Hope we can get your services for the next one (with a block on any local competition attending of course)
Pete
-
Thanks Pete, nice flyer.. Sent you mine 8)
-
Hi
I think 1 per 1000 is a little conservative, i would expect 2 to 3 per 1000 over a 2 year period, with the same number of timewasters.
Obviously the leaflet & the area involved willl make a difference.
Dave
-
Could somebody please email me there leaflet as im a newbie to cc and looking for ideas for flyers. andrewtitmuss@aol.com Thanks guys :)
-
Been delivering for past 2 weeks, so far 1% response, hope that will increase in next month or two.
-
Hi Guys
I used to aim for 10000 a month, repeating areas about twice a year.
I have had up to 5 delivers at one time but generally 2.
Leaflet always had an offer.
Cheers
Doug
-
Nice tan Doug, where you been.
-
1% that's 10/1000
Free box of chocolates with every order? Now there's an idea. :P
I do the same area every 4-6 weeks sometimes it's the same leaflet but with recent testimonials for that area printed on the back.
I've printed a leather suite offer for Feb but i think it needs a deicated leaflet cos it's not worked.
-
Yep, put out just under a thousand and have got 10 jobs booked in or already done.
No offers on leaflet, do have an offer on the website but nobody has taken it up!!
Could never bring myself to give away a box of chocs, I'd eat them before I got to the customer.
-
I can only dream of 10 jobs per thousand what do you think makes the difference for you?
-
I've had 10 jobs for a 1000 leaflets once or twice over the last 8 years, sometimes you hit a good area, I did it by visiting small villages which never get targeted by leaflet companies because they are too small to bother with.
but its impossible to consistently get that result with general leaflet delivery, OK if you knock on the door and give them the leaflet you might get that result., if you could then don't bother carpet cleaning any more, people will pay big money for a 1% response leaflet.
Mike
-
I am targeting the villages funnily enough, and am lucky enough to live in an area where no other carpet cleaner leaflets. One advertises on the local radio. I have just started in a local town and so far have done 300 leaflets one afternoon this week which have resulted in 2 bookings and 1 I priced on the phone I didn't get.
The first afternoon's leaflets resulted in 2 calls from the first 15 houses I did, but nothing from the rest.
It does take much longer to leafelt these areas, but as I have the time it is worth it so far.
Paid 500 quid for 15,000 leaflets, they have more than paid for themselves with first 1000ish out.
-
The other things to bare in mind is conversion rates and the job value. If I get close to 100% uptake on £200+ jobs where you sign them up on maintenanve plans then it's worth the extra legwork. Plus the referrals tend to be similar types.
One major tip.
I never go leafleting without having my mp3 player. I'm either learning something or being entertained so the time passes more quickly and you begin to look forward to it.
-
I designed about 75% of the leaflet myself, the other 25% is nicked from here and there.
My background is graphic design and advertising, spent about 15 years in the print trade in one way or another.
Still buy every marketing book I can get hold of, Waterstones in Bath and Salisbury must rub their hands when they see me walk in the door. Just love the science behind selling, I tried to change my leaflets before I picked them up but it was too late. The next lot will be very different due to one book I bought a few weeks ago which I think is the best book I've ever read on the subject. In the process of updating my websites to reflect the new idea.

I enjoy sitting here playing with the pc, enjoy reading ( mostly marketing ) books and enjoy quoting and getting in the work. Just hate actually doing it!!
The job I lost was a sofa I quoted 130 quid for without seeing it, she said I was much cheaper then the last guy and it was an expensive sofa ( Joyson Holland ). Each job about a hundred quid domestic, done a couple of commercials and charged well over £200 each after speaking with Commander Straker, I was going to do those cheaper!! Owe Chris a 1664 or two at the CCDO.
-
I have put out 20,000 leaflts since mid Jan and only had 12 calls from them. This time of year is slow, but I normaly get around 1 call per thou leaflets delivered.
-
I find it hard to keep track where i have been with mine, would be good to get a giant street map, cover it with perspex and shade in the streets where i've been, when its full start over again.. Say 5miles by 5 miles?
-
Hows the website going Dave?
-
Not good Gary, the 1&1 place ain't working, cant use the website builder all week, they cant say when it is to be finished.. Good tip off! Got started and its all good when working ;)
Any chance of doing swapsies on your flyer and mine, may give you a bell tomorrow avo as could do with some design advise?
-
Cheers Gary, you too

-
Interesting the variation in results.
Gary J getting 10 per thousand
Paul Shaun and myself getting 1 per thousand this time of the year
Mike is a diffrent kettle of fish as over the years he has achieved Brand Saturation
I think the moral of the story is do not presume leaflets are the road to riches they are just one tool,
-
Ian good point. You need to have your marketing in all areas.
Leaflets
BT
Yellow pages or Thompson
Internet free sites
Web Site
Local papers
Local rags
Church rags
Shop windows
Cutomer letters
etc etc etc
There is not one thing that will bring in piles of works unless your dead lucky. You have to keep advertising in all areas as each one will bring in some work for you at different levels.
And regarding leaflets. There is no secret leaflet or best leaflet to use.All you have to do is design a decent looking leaflet and then keep putting it out REGULARLY, once they have seen it 5 or 6 times on their door step ( rather your company name) they will start to ring.
The best tip I got was off Mike Halliday about 5 years ago,he said.
Put a pin in your local map and market 5 miles around it,and keep leafleting that area. I did that and that alone has contributed to about 80% of my business over the following years.
But even now I still have to market that area, over the last few weeks 20,000 have been put out and over the next 2 to 3 weeks another 30,000 will go out.
Its slow at the moment but once the weather changes in a couple of weeks it will pay off.
-
Hope this works, what do you think?
-
Thanks joe,your'e a top bloke.
-
Hope this works, what do you think?
Thats a very good one. To the point and easy to digest. Thats how I like it but I guess its what the custies think that counts
-
Cheers Pete,it's DL size 260gfm card.
by the way there is 2 designs to look at.
is better to drop 10,000 in one go or do 1,000 at a time.
-
carpetworx, how are you going to get them delivered? if its the same price to put them out as it would a bigger leaflet then I'd use a bigger one also why use such thick card, if you use paper you'll get twice as many for your money.
leaflets are about numbers not fancy artwork, your lealfet looks good but I don't think it would bring in the same results as a bigger basic leaflet with more info
Mike
-
Mike show me what you mean.
-
there's a couple here that show A5 leaflets with more info

What peoples opinion on repeat delivery times, every 3 mths?
-
I had one hand delivered back to me yesterday, shame I wasn't in. The moron even wrote URGENT on the envelope.
Hope he comes back.
Anyone else had this happen to them ???
Bennie, I was thinking 3 months as well, any more than that I think people will get cheesed off.
-
What a sad git bringing it back, he must be a busy man! lol!
I did have a woman come out screwing it up and threw it in the bin, looking at me wanting me to see sort of thing, I just laughed, its funny people getting so stressed over such a silly thing. ;D
-
I got to admit, I am disappointed to hear I will only get 10 responses for 10,000 leaflets, thats pretty sh#t to say the least!! Yeah I know it can lead on to other customers and future work, but its still alot of effort for relatively naff all.
I was going to deliver myself, Ipod on listening to Gomez and Foo Fighters with a glass or two of red wine in me belly, but now im not so sure id not rather be back at home knockin me missus about for an hour or two instead :o
Thanks for all responses, Its been an interesting read, I just hope the one in one hundred response is true as above....... :'(
Thanks again
Dan

Dan,
At the end of the day you have to test leaflets yourself.
For example 1 in a thousand brings in average sale of £120
Printing costs £10 distribution through leaflet distributor £25
Total cost £35
Gross Profit £85 time ten =£850 easy money ??? ???
On the other hand average sale £60 same costs £25 gross profit.
time 10 = £250 gross profit
Lot of risk and work for little reward
Unless you are good at referals
so there is always hope ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Thats the secret keep smiling
And quitters never win
