Title: Accountants Yearly Professional Charges
Post by: L.Doubtfire - The Blade Runner on February 08, 2008, 03:09:39 pm

Just wondered what you fella`s pay your accountant for doing your yearly accounts?
I`m a self employed sole trader and always have been.Last year he charged me £487
Including VAT for his services.Just got my books back today with his invoice which
Is very basic and it say`s `To professional services rendered` £600. I thought it was a bit `steep`.What are your opinions on this, comments appreciated.

I have just paid £450 inc vat which I thought was steep. What irked me was the £12 expenses...For what?

However I have to balance that off with the amount of tax saved and I am still better off!

My tax bill inc class 4 NI is less than £300

I paid £233 for the year he just did.  At least I know my accountant turns over less than £64k because there is no VAT mentioned   :)
I am a sole trader and I make it very easy for him which is probably reflected in the charge.

I do my own lewis.

I presume your accountant assembles your receipts, does a profit and loss account, and the fills in your return. As he has been doing this for a number of years you must have grown familiar with the way he sets it out by now. Do it yourself.

Assuming you are declaring 30k net eanrings he is taking a whole weeks money off you.

A bottle of wine is all it cost me this year!!! As my little sister is a chartered accountant, but she says that she may not be able to do it next year :(  I think I may be able to persuade her though!! ;)

£40 but i set out everything myself and give him a disk for his comp if he needs it.
He charges my mate who recommended him £500+, but receives his accounts jumbled up in a carrier bag. For the cheapest price, do what you can yourself.

Think i got charged £375 + vat this year.  What made me laugh is last year i got a letter from inland revenue saying i've over paid by £13. A couple of days later my accountant sent me a cheque for £12, my accountant  took £1 off me for addministation!!! How petty!

i pay around a £1000 per year but have just changed as i found accountant was not doing his job. our new one is one of our customers. seems to know his stuff too. In my experience accountancy is all history and many of them want to run 18 months behind. i have agreed with new accountant that i will send him a report off our system every 4 months and he will review and give any recommendations. this will be our 4th accountant in 6 years. and every one of the other 3 has been uncontrollable i.e. only want to do books at end of year and little interest in our own business. many are ill informed too. try asking them if directors have to be paid national minimum (they don't) see if they know that one most don't if they do they might be well informed. the bigger companies are too expensive in my experience too. one i chatted too proposed that he would rise bill by 10% every year. (try to tell your customers that when you are signing them up for window cleaning) the last one said that i should have phoned him at end of year to inform him my return was due??? this despite £1000 bill. in my opinion view your accountant as an expense and insist you get the service.
