Title: Tuft or colour

There are a few bleach marks on a bedroom carpet at a hotel I clean- plain green ,nylon tufted ,twist pile with polyprop primary & secondary backing. Have got spare carpet to play with - but should I re tuft or try mixing some aniline dye to coluor it?
I think the tuft route would be better so do youneed to strip some secondary back off to tuft or just get the needle to catch the primary back? Have done it on woven carpet before and found it quite easy to see where to put the tuft , but not sure with the tufted carpets.

Cant help you on that one Mike, but are you going to Carpex Coventry on March 27th/28th (I'm going Fri 28th), or the carpet cleaners day out on Mon April 7th at Wolverhampton? Love to meet up for a chat.

Unless your a very gifted colour repair tech its unlikely to achieve a great result.  Re-tuft is the way to go if it can be done.

the idea is to recreate how it was done in the factory.

so with a woven i would sew it back in

And with a tufted i would glue it with latex, pull the surrounding tufts apart so you can see the hole put a little latex on the bottom and then punch it in using needle or small screwdriver etc

Depending how steady and accurate you are you may or may not benefit from holding surrounding fibres back with a bit of masking tape otherwise a certain law dictates you'll get glue elsewhere on the way down to the base.
Make sure you. Strip off any old glue from the transplant fibre and tip the bottom with glue as well as the 'hole'.

Joe, I'm very tempted to go to Wolverhampton ,was there for the low moisture  day that Ken did last year, the programme looks good.
As regards the tufting you obviously have to sew the transplant tuft into the primary backing, then are you saying part the pile and put a spot of glue at the base of the tuft to anchor it in. Will leather glue be good as it doesnt set hard or does it have to be latex?

You need latex if it is a secondary back or copydex same thing

How good is your colouring?

you could always pull a tuft of discoloured carpet and replace it with a new tuft and see if you like it then if not get the repair kit out.
