Hi all,
Pete (ex-lands) and I are in the process of organising a ccdo (carpet cleaners day out) event hopefully to be held in a few months time. Our event will be an informal affair and cover a variety of subjects arrising on this forum all the time. Venue and date to be arranged but will be in the Midlands somewhere possibly Birmingham area.
Workshops for the day will include:
Paul Moss (quick leather cleaning, repair and re-colouring) *This session is not for beginners!
Dave Liahona (saturation rug cleaning, if time allows dye setting, stain removal, re-tufting & re-weaving)
Doug Holloway (chemistry / stain removal using high street products)
TBA (basic marketing, leaflets etc.)
Chris Straker (how to market the green side of your business)
More to be confirmed......
Price for the day is to be arranged and include light refreshments throughout the day and a buffet for lunch.
We will also be sorting out accomodation at a (hopefully) discounted rate for anyone that wants to stay over after the event. Will be good to go out for a meal and have a few beers again the same as last year!!
Any questions or suggestions for the day please contact me on (07721 827163) / jasonhedges73@aol.com or Pete on (07816 276290) / pete@oakleafcc.co.uk
If anyone is interested in coming along please put your hand up so we can gauge numbers and start looking for possible venues.
Also, if anyone has a subject area they would like covered on the day or if they would like to contribute to the day please let us know!!
All the best,
Jason.

Perhaps in the marketing you could have specifics like how to convert at higher prices over the phone or techniques on in the home quotes, alot of cleaners would benefit from this also how to sell protector and also upselling extra rooms on the same trip.
I'll try and post a few more ideas but obviously if it's a full day or I'm talking poo then take no notice.
Shaun
-
Good idea Shaun we missed that. Have a background in sales so can run that one myself. Thanks
Pete
-
Nice one Shaun, great idea.
Keep them coming, we want to provide what people are interested in!
-
Can Doug or Ian put this down as a sticky?
-
Give Mike Hall a ring.
He's the envirodri rep and i'm sure he would be happy to give a demo on dry cleaning.

Yes will be going, good idea mate!
Thanks again.
-
Great idea, would love to come.
What about a section on getting the best out of the web and also what about asking Yellow Pages and Thomson to do a question and answer session. They never believe what we tell them about their books.
Cheers Neil
-
Hi Neil
I agree re web and that idea has aleady been knocked about. Will look into. Doubt YP or Thompson would send someone down for what will be an aggressive version of the Spanish inquisition though.
Pete

Sounds good, my hand's up!
Justin

what about a little award giveing out ??? have a few vans on show like a car show it will give people many idears on how to set there vans out , what to carry and the best way to make use of space ??
how many times have you seen a pic on here and thought thats a good idear never thought of that
-
We are thinking along those lines but thought we could do a porty vs TM competition for a bit of fun at the end of the day. I'm sure Dave Liahona would be happy to represent the TMs and I'm happy to take a beating from him on the porty front but yeah why not, I'm sure we could take a look at each others vans at some point.
-
Pete
As long as your porty is top of the range, then he may have some competion, make sure he vacuums and pre sprays as well as a lot truckys dont do this even against the rules of NCCA.
Cheers

(unwraping pipes, pre spaying , cleaning and packing away) so people get the full idear
-
Hi
Please add my name to the list.
Dave
-
This is Dave's point Neil. When you are working with both volume and power of water, you don't need to do that sort of prep and whilst I have never seen it done I don't doubt Dave's word. My porty is decent enough and I can whip up 400psi with heat (Ninja) but against 1000psi (with volume) I know he will beat me it's just whether the prep I do would show a better result. It would certainly put an age old debate to bed.
You coming? Plenty of you have read this post but only a few said yes. Surprised (even in this short space of time) that we haven't had more yes's.
Pete
-
Hi Guys
I have made it sticky as requested.
As for my bit I plan a pratical demonstration of the use of Solvents in particular for stain removal, what works on what, simple chemical composition so you know why it's likely to work, reaction to fabrics, health and safety etc.
It would be simple chemistry with a heavy emphasis on practical stain removal.
I think it's an excellent idea to have real world CC's demonstrating their particular knowledge, there's a lot of it out there ;)
Cheers
Doug

Has anyone ever used 1000psi on carpets, has there ever been an occasion when 1000psi was needed to clean carpet ?

A question I'm sure Dave will be happy to answer (and perhaps even demonstrate). Rob, you know your stuff, anything you would like to cover?

Yes I would like to attend, count me in please.

John
-
Been labouring in London for the same reason. Roll on the summer eh.
-
Jeremy Kyle won't make your phone ring!
Go out and see retailers, post leaflets, database, letting agents.
Shaun
OOps it's 10.48 in the morning and I'm at home Doh!
My excuse is that my van breaks need doing, my data base is going out as I type and Jeremy Kyle is winging his way to me with a cuppa.
-
You up for this Shaun?
-
definately but with having no money today may I have a discount? it's cold and dark in Yorkshire and there's no electricity because the lines don't come here that's why I have a TM and run on petrol.
Shaun
-
I'll be announcing soon an NCCA Workshop event to be held in Shropshire in April. It'll be part seminar and part hands on. The dye on the carpet you'll be (safely) cleaning bleeds!
Safe and happy cleaning :)

Don't give me that, your the richest bugger on here. You can pay double.
-
I've just spoken to John Kelly, he's up for bringing a prowler along. Either the current 13hp or new 15hp. Looking forward to having a go!
-
Why not look through the NCCA associate members you could get some from there?
http://www.ncca.co.uk/associate_members.htm
Shaun
PS Pete DOUBLE :o will you take 2p a month?
-
Have we got any proposed dates? obviously if you can get a date now we can FIX it in our diaries and book holidays, jobs, funerals around it.
-

No date yet mate still looking at possible venues depending on the level of interest. Hopefully in a couple of months time March/April.
"Book funerals around it" - You thinking of knocking someone off Shaun and planning it not to clash with the day ;D
-
Some people can be so inconciderate so if I book a date in my diary they will already know I won't be around to see them burn.
Shaun

Pete & Jason
Put my name down ................ but all depends on the day/date.

Thanks Mike,
That sounds great, had lots of emails regarding the subject that people would like covered. Is is ok if I give you a call next week to discuss the offer?
All the best,
Jason.
-
Jason with the way YP is going down the drain and the internet is moving on (well perhaps not so up North) well Mike would do us all a favour please don't pass it up, if we can get someone to talk about onsite quotes and someone else about telephone quotes then that's covered I think that is worth going for on it's own.
Shaun

Shaun
Hi Shaun,
I think Pete might be up for discussing YP as he used to work for them. Only assuming as he's away for a couple of days but spoken today on the phone a few times regarding event.
If anyone is available to discuss quoting that would be good as you so rightly mention. Also selling ad-ons (protectors, treatments etc.) while quoting would be interesting as well.
Making lots of calls at the moment to see what we can sort out. We're trying to make this day full of bits and pieces most people are interested in and come up on the forums all the time.
If anyone wants to be considered please get in touch.
All the best,
Jason.
-
Shaun,
Do you fancy doing something on the day?
Perhaps about running a successfull cleaning business for 20 years?
Or just buying the first round ;D

Must be a different Shaun Ashmore, as far as I know he fights his way to the bar to buy the first round, no expense spared :o.
-
good to see the interest is there.
going to bed now. Just got in from a 17hr shift. night night
-
I'm tea total so I'm afraid I don't go near the bars but I could always change the habbit if someone is buying?
Jason the best onsite quoters are the fast track boys as they charge the highest and get good return on conversions although I don't know if they'll show their lap top presentation but I think the general stuff ie answering objections or upselling would be enough.
On the phone a guy called Stuart Clark has a telesales guy called Jimmy he's definately worth it! might need a personal invite though, I'll ask him.
Shaun
-
Guys..............The enthusiasm is great, but your time will be very restricted and will fly, I suggest you only have one marketing presentation and with the web growth Mike Boxall might be the man. After all if there was no Mike you would not be meeting like this.
Practical demos - with everyone wanting a go - use up time, but that is what most people will want, to find a better, quicker, easier way.
-
Is Mike a carpet cleaner? I'm looking at the 1 man band marketing which for most on here is the majority ;D but obviously Mike started somewhere.
Shaun
-
You normally talk sense Shaun, well, most of the time, but can't see the difference in marketing for a " one man band " or a full blown orchestra, if they supply the same service.
-

Maybe he's talking about money (a subject closer to Shauns heart than his Aorta). Mktng to keep 10 truckmounts running and one porty are two very different matters.
Pete
-
When you are a biiger concern you go for different work or selling a product or service as you'll send your best technician, if you are a smaller one you tend to play on your personality ie buying me.
Shaun
-
Don't know how I never thought of that, damn you're one smart cookie
rob
-
Any thoughts from those interested on wether this should take place on a week or weekend day?
-
Friday or a Sunday as those that waont to work on the monday can and those that dont work the weekend can stay over and get drunk.
-
p.s. anyone know the name of the venue where the TM boys have their sunny day out? Jason given me insufficient detail to find it.
Pete

I would say in early days Mr B had to do just that.
You forget he has won numerous rewards for his on line activities
If he was apearing at a Seminar of business leaders people would pay hundreds for his words of wisdom.

Thats the price for attendance on the day sorted then. ;D

Some have raised some fears about the event but the ethos will remain so don't worry it will be a day that is useful, practical, devoid of the hard sell and a bit of a laugh.
-
We now have some more detail re event.
Date: 7th April
Cost per ticket: £35 (includes tea/coffee and hot/cold buffet lunch)
Venue: http://goodyearpavilion.co.uk/
Pete
-
Hi Pete.
What is your limit on the number of people that can attend the day.
CHEERS TONY
-
Venue holds up to 300 but doubt we'll get near that first time round (wouldn't want to either). If we can get bewteen 50-100 that would be good.
-
Pete,
£35 for tea, coffee n a snack :o :o :o, would it be ok if i bring a flask and my dr who sandwhich box?
Richie.
-

For all that training you'd normally pay 3 times that.
Seriously though we have struck a deal with the venue to keep the cost down. Details will follow.
-
Although it would be good to see everyone if you got 300 unless you had continous seminars you would not see anything or be able to ask questions.
I remember one at Milton Keynes Nick was surronded by his Groupies ;D ;D ;D and all the samples went in about 5 minutes.
if I got one I might have been an Mpower or Aleg stop man ??? ???
Anyway I wish you well .
One day someone will do one in Peterborough

Money well saved there 8)
Have you got a list of definite suppliers, talks etc etc?
-
Ian
not looking at those sorts of numbers (far from it). The sessions will be duplicated to allow people to see everything if they want. You not up for it then?
Steve
The sessions thus far are as the beginning of the thread and suppliers have been contacted who have said yes in principle but I only contacted them yesterday (could'nt do before without a date) so should be able to confirm in next few days mate. Happy to tell you privately who those are but not in here without a definite yes from them.
Just had a yes from Furniture Clinic.
Also DP Print will have a table with literature and and a special offer on 10,000 leaftlets for visitors. Mark himself will not be there as he has just become a dad so I will make up his table.
Pete
-
Pete,
Not saying that probably find a cheap travel lodge
Although I go up North alot the;Miidlands is a strange world to me ;D ;D
-
There is a hotel close by Ian and will try to get a deal there once I have an idea of numbers.
-
I'm a bit confused here (nothing new about that) I've attended a few SDO's over the years, the original idea was that it was an opportunity to try various bits of kit without pressure from manufacturers and it all revolved around actually cleaning carpet, so if you wanted to try a Ninja you could, if you wanted to see whether a titanium wand was worth the money have a go with it, of course it needed a good spread of attendees with varying degrees of knowlege and equipment, it enabled Dry fusion to go head to head with a truckmount on the same carpet and soiling conditions without all the marketing hype. Ever tried 4 different upholstery tools on real seats in real condition? Here was your chance. The venue was given free in return for the cleaning of the carpet as were refreshments, lunch and drinks could be paid for if required, usually about £5 a head. When the manufacturers gave their support it added another dimension, we could for the first time test a Prochem machine(for instance) against a Hydramaster(for instance) in real field conditions. This event doesn't seem to do this, am I missing something here?
-
Hi Guys
Dave
The CCDO concept may have evolved, but doesn't everything.
This day should be much more wide ranging and potentially rewarding and there will be a chance to compare machines etc in real life situations and also to learn from other real life CC's who maybe have a greater indepth knowledge.
I am looking forward to listening to/discussing with the likes of Paul, Dave and Chris.
As for cost I understand there is a charge per delegate but 35 Pounds, tax deductable is hardly going to break the bank !
For my part it is noticeable from the topics which repeatedly come up , that many would benefit from a more in depth technical knowledge unencumbered by the need to push a particular marketing line.
Stain removal is always useful, if a difficult one to pull off as anyone who hads ever tried will tell.
Cheers
Doug
-
I would imagine part of the £35 will be going to the speakers cannot see them doing it for nothing right or wrong, £35 is hardly going to break the bank if you at least pick up one thing which will make your business better.
-
What I would like to see is Restormates Prowler working along side Solutions UK 2008 Scorpion - to see how they compare in performance.
The Prowler because of its compactness and relatively low cost as a TM, and the Scorpion because of it (arguably) being the best portable currently available.
Although the Prowler is probably £2k (ish) dearer - I would like to see if any extra performance is worth the extra money bearing in mind loss of portability.
But it probably wont happen, will it. Shame.
-
JOE you not tried a NINJA ?? arguably the best portie out their ha ha ha x ;D ;D ;D
-
For the record I will not be getting paid for my input on the day and having spoke to Dave Liahona also he is not. We have asked for some expenses to be taken into account for set up etc.
The costs for this I would not thought were great but I would guess there are hidden costs such as telephone costs, supply, petrol costs for travelling to and from the venue ( for checking it out and prior setting up visit) .
At the end of the day Pete and Jason have done the maths and they have a lot of pressure im sure sorting this type of day out and I for one would not expect them to do it for free.
£35 as Doug says is not going to break the back, if people feel its too expensive then just dont go, easy.
-

Not having a go Mossy, if I were travelling down to give a talk/demo I would expect my expenses to be taken into account. It makes me laugh people going on about the cost because 1 job that someone lands because of the techniques picked up on this day will more than pay for it.The NCCA charge for events so why not for this, some people want everything for nothing.
-
No fee involved for my small input either ......... certainly don't expect one ::)
Cost of hire and refreshments is what fee will pay for.
-
Hi Guys
I suppose I better ad that I have also not asked for a fee, as by method of elimination some may deduce I'm going to make a killing :o
Lets not get bogged down in pettiness and make this a really useful and fun day.
Cheers
Doug
-
Will a representative from the ncca be there?
Where is everyone staying?
Dougs round I believe ???
-
The last SDO at that venue im sure was about £6 per head.
Richie.
-
Dougs round I believe ???
He is, but I think he is on a diet :P
-
For the effort some people are putting in to organise this day I would EXPECT them to be reimbursed AT LEAST their expenses.
20 odd years ago I was on an organisation committee doing a few road safety events for motorcyclists and car drivers and I know what is required to set things up, weeks of planning.
For £35, which includes some grub, I sounds like excellant value for money.
-
Lets try to not compare this day to any other that has happened before as I think this will be quite a unique day.
That said, if you are going to compare, there is a spot and stain removal course being put on by the N.C.C.A. for just over £180:00 for the day.
Doug is just about to do the same or very similar for free.
Some people just want blood.
I hope what I have to say and show will be worth, let me see, divided by everything that is going on at the same time, maybe 5 quid.
I went on an apology of a day about Oriental rug cleaning, learned diddly squat and was shown how to clean a pet damaged rug with an upholstery tool. What a joke and it cost me £75 if I remember correctly.
Anyway, most if not all will spend more than £35 on drink, food and odds and ends over the day. So again, whats the beef?
Best, Dave.
P.S. as has already been mentioned I am not getting paid for this either. Nor would I dream of charging under these circumstances. Different cirumstances, absolutely..............
-
£35 on lager is a good day out ::) ..................... food is always an optional extra ;D
-
Quote from Doug(This day should be much more wide ranging and potentially rewarding and there will be a chance to compare machines etc in real life situations and also to learn from other real life CC's who maybe have a greater indepth knowledge.)
Thanks Doug, I'm really not bothered about the cost, if the guys who organise these things want to make money that's ok with me, if you don't like that idea then don't go. My question, which you've partly answered is what machines and equipment can we compare, in other words whoever is going needs to list what equipment they are bringing to the event and if they're willing to let people have a go with it, have i made myself clearer now? For example I could bring Boxxer 427, Titanium wand, Greenglide, RX20, CFR and Drymaster uph tools and a Turbo Hybrid, I could also demonstrate 4 to the door if anyone wants to see it working
-
Gary
How did you know I was on a diet.
Dave , it's nice of you to compare my effort with a whole day stain removal course but I'm sure the organisers will only give me an hour !
Cheers
Doug
-
Hi Dave
I'm sure the organisers and delegates, sounds a bit posh, would like to see this sort of equipment in competition with say a top porty set up, I believe Pete has some ideas on this.
Cheers
Doug
-
Doug, thats my point. In an hour under "live" conditions I am sure I will or could learn more from you than at a full days course for the aforementioned £180.
Best, Dave.
-
Hi all,
Nice to see more interest in the day out. Thanks for the comments and suggestions put forward ;).
Firstly I've noticed the cost of the day being of some concern to a few people.
Me and Pete are not doing this to make money, we obviously have the £6 per head lunch and refreshments cost to cover. As well as numerous hours of phone calls already made, travelling to the venue before the event to inspect layout etc. and our expenses for the event.
Likewise we will insist on at least covering expenses of those contributing to the day.
There has been lots of time gone into this already and will be plenty more before the day. We consider the £35 cost to be very reasonable considering the line-up already and hopefully a few more things to be added.
We are looking to secure the venue and to do so we need a few more names on the list!
All the best,
Jason
-

Dave thats the spirit :). It would be fantastic if you brought your kit along I'm sure many people will be interested (me included). Will be nice seeing your rx20 do the carpets we've got to clean in super fast time ;D. Would love to have a go too if poss! You mention comparing t/m's. My panther 27 is similar in performance to your 427 so perhaps we can compare them side by side.
Same for me, if anyone wants to have a go with my machine they're more than welcome.
If anyone else wants to bring something along of interest let us know.
All the best,
Jason.

I wound personally love to see a dry fusion set up working if any one would oblige
Thanks John

Hi Doug, its been mentioned so many times about porty vs. t/m we thought it may be possible to compare say a high end porty and entry level t/m in a mini contest. Not sure how we could do this still trying to get my head around it.
I was hoping you would represent the porty and I've got someone to cover the t/m ;D:

Dry in ten minutes :)

OK I'll just do backup then

I've got my portable.

Hi Robert,
You got one of those? Looks similar to the prowler.
Gonna bring it along?
-
No,(just joking) haven't got one of those, its called a Mini Twister, not a bad looking Portable .
Regards Rob.
Ps just got my little old Scorpion.
-
Hi Robert,
John Kelly is bringing a prowler along to demo which will be good.
Your machine could qualify for the porty v t/m challenge if your up for it ;).
All the best,
Jason.
-
My Scorpion against the prowler,no problem. Just taken delivery of a four jet wand on a 1.75 bore, running on 2" hose, awesome airflow to water ratio.
Bring it on, Rob 8) ;D
-
Sounds like an interesting match! We'll have to think of a format and see if John or Steve Gunn are up for it as he's got a prowler as well.
Nice one for putting yourself forward :).
-
My money (which I don't show around much) is on the prowler, I like to take other peoples money but I don't like to see them cry- well not too much!
Shaun
-
Hi Shaun,
You coming then mate? You can run the betting syndicate ;)
-
Just waiting on a certain date nothing sinister but I'll know very soon, if you want you can have a whip round to pay for my £35.00 unless you are saving up to let the truck mounters come for free ;D
Shaun
-
;D Anyone from any other forum is more than welcome. The day is open to all.
Whats £35 to you anyway, you've probably got it in your vans ashtray :).

I heard Chris Straker is dressing up as Kermit The Frog and singing 'It's Not Easy Being Green', that's gotta be worth the ticket price on its own.

I heard you can take a few pints steve. I also heard you (as a sideline) stick three strands of hair on your head occasionally and act as a rab c nesbitt lookalike (quote-Shaun Ashmore, funniest post I ever read on CIU)
-
As ther are going to be top guys demonstrating esp Dave who has a string of
IICRC QUALIFICATIONS ,have you applied for the day to receive an industry event status so that we can have a continuing education pass.
-
Hi Ian,
Which Dave are you referring to (Liahona?)
You raise a good point which I will investigate but because these subjects are far frfom "by the book" I doubt it.

-
I'll take mine sober (only coz I'm not alllowed out).

Made the wife come up with it as her idea ........... to see her sweet 1 year old nephew ;)
-
Excellent. Someones tag on here is about diplomacy being the art of letting others get your way. Good work. I work on a reward points system similar to a Nectar card. I let her waste money on useless stuff or wear what she wants me to wear when we go out (and that sort of thing) then I use the points up by going down the pub, getting drunk and trying to pee in the cupboard in the middle of the night. That tends to put me in the red on the card only for me to repeat the process.
-

Still haven't got mine but I think it's something with BT Broadband as some other emails just don't seem to be getting through. Probably MI5 intercepting again.
Do I need to do something right now, like book a room or something?
Mike
-
Hi Mike,
I've re sent the email and to the new one you provided.
Hopefully one has come through. Check your spam boxes as well.
Let me know if you've got it.
All the best,
Jason.

Jason I dont know what numbers are now, but think you are near the 50 mark.
I think that 50 is about the right amount for this type of day.
-
Think there may be several places left so if anyone wants one get in quick.
