Title: Don't do it !!!!
Post by: Wayne Thomas on January 23, 2008, 06:33:48 pm
One of my customers is a top level bank manager, so I took the opportuntity of asking him whether it is safe to put your banking sort code and account number on your website to receive payments.
He advised me very, very, strongly that it is very foolish to give out any of your banking details on a website launched on the internet.
He has seen many a bank account have funds withdrawn because of this.
I was going to put my bank account number and sort code on a website as recommended by several forum members on here but I don't think so anymore. I'll stick with paypal & notchex as they are safer.
Do any of you forum members with a website, have your bank account number and sort code displayed for your customers and fraudsters?

I have my bank account details on my website... Will probably be taking them off soon though.

I'm actually seriously thinking of renting those handheld card machines to take debit and credit cards at the door.

every cheque you write out has these details, if the banks fall foul of fraud then it is more than just these details, either that or the banks are total prats!
Every shop you go into and pay for by card has all the details it needs to rip you off!!
So  easy for an unscrupulous cashier to note down your pin number and your security number, and sell it off to A.N. other who can then go online and max out your card or empty your bank account.
Not that hard to trace your address and post code for sure.

your account number, sort code and so on is certainly safer than your card details!

Identity theft is a big problem in todays society, mores the pity  :'(

Wayne,
I'm wary of critisising because of the current witch hunt mentality going on on the site, but this is the worst kind of chinese whispers  hearsay.

DA put some similar  nonsence up and the only factual instance he could find was Clarkson who had challenged people to do it with his details in a national newspaper; Apparently some charities are allowed to set up direct debits without authorisation. It cost him five hundred quid for prime time national news publicity, he wont be doing that again in a hurry.

Are you sure this bloke's a bank manager? As  many many people have already said these details are already on every cheque we write. An example of a window cleaners paying in details being misused would be different.

On a friendlier note I've got some marketing I'd like to share with you.

The bank manager is genuine. I told him about window cleaners giving out their bank details to customers on a one to one basis which he said is fairly safe unless the customer themself is a fraudster who could go out of their way to rip you off if they knew what they were doing. He said the REAL problem is when you advertise your bank details on the internet in your website because it is on view to everyone around the world with a computer and that fraudsters do look out for this. He definitely advised me NOT to put my bank details (account no. or sort code) on my website but said if I decide to hand these details to trusting customers it shouldn't be too much of a security risk.

Mr Solubility, I'm interested in your marketing idea you wish to share. If you prefer to email me directly you are welcome (easycleanwayne@msn.com). :)

Hahahahahahaha

And how would they take out the money? lmao, the English really live in the stoneage with the bankcharges and the 'account number and sort code stealing money' myths.

You have to be 1000x more careful with your card. Everyone who reads the card, writes down the numbers, can plunder your account. Now THAT is scary, and cause for concern.

Not a simple number of your account dudes.

All you need is a name and address (which isn't that hard to find) and it's possible to get some of your money. All anyone needs is a bank account in a false name with a withdrawal card and they could set up a direct debit. Just like those utility companies etc that send you a direct debit form in the post.
It might not last more than 1 payment before being noticed but the trick is to not setup too big a DD and to use a cashpoint that has no cctv around.
Fraud is by far 1 of the more simpler crimes to do. And get away with.
I still give customers my details if they wanna pay by standing order though.
