i feel sure this has been asked before but marcus and me was talking about this today.Isopropyl alcohol in wfp water?what is it supposed to do? does it work?what is the science behind it?what ratio do you mix it?does it not effect the tds reading?? ???
-
Isopropyl alcohol will not affect the tds of the water there are no solids in alcohol, it will help prevent the water from freezing by lowering the freezing point of the water, also as it is volatile it will evaporate very quickly when the water hits the window.
-
So what effect does this have on the glass...... some say it can make a beading window sheet....How come
Marcus...

I would imagine the alcohol will be breaking up the surface tension of the water.

Where can i get it ???
-
I use it all the time regardless weather it`s cold or not,it cleans better and leaves no spots or runs, window`s that used to leave the odd mark don`t anymore, don`t ask me why they just don`t.I use 1 whiskey glass full straight in the top of my 500ltr tank, with the amount that`s left in the water when you top up you`ll get about 2000ltrs before you need to repeat the dose, you`ll get bubbles when it`s applied to the glass but they evaporate almost immeadiatly and that`s the sign when you need to put more in the water, when the isopropanol is flushed out completley you`ll have no more bubbles.

I get bubbles on the glass when I use the hot system.
The hot system reduces the surface tension and the viscosity of the water.
Perhaps the isopropyl is doing the same
-
appreciate the feed back but can anyonegive accurate ratios for adding this stuff to the water ??? ??? ??? how many mls per litre/100ltrs etc for optimum effect

Steve:
Did you notice any difference between the isopropyl and using the hot water. I bought some of that stuff but haven't dared to throw it in my tank yet as I'm happy with the hot. May try a bit in a trolley system using cold water on hydophobic glass.
-
I use a whiskey glass full,or a 1/3 of a pint.Because it mixes with the water you will get at least 2000ltrs with it in the tank, you`ll know when you need to top up as the bubbles will be gone when the water hits the window.

Wayne,
Haven't tried it yet. Wouldn't mind getting my hands on some to experiment with. GOt my hands on a backpack, may try it with that.
Anyone know if it will it damage the water pump?
-
just wondering , as its a spirit, would it affect any rubber parts in the pump?
-
And a whisky glassful has what anti-freeze effect in 500L? Can't be much surely?
-
yes - 3 with out a bad wind & if u clean the sheltrd sides when doing xposed side leav water runing slow to preven pipes iceing up . yes it sheats on alot of windows
