Title: l200 as work vehicle, practical? seriously
Post by: LWC on January 12, 2008, 09:33:00 pm
would they be practical, i got excited about the thought of getting one, but then everyone...especially the wife thinks its a stupid idea

admitidly, i want something bigger than my pug partner, but also the added advantage of the extra seats is a biggie to me.

ecomnically? if i didnt get one of these id be looking at a transit, so how would they compare?

as ive said a nice tank custom fit in the back pickup part, then pole carriers on roof

seriously, how practical are they? everyday working out of and family car now and then

I`ve looked into it and there`s not enough room even with a custom tank.

What a waste of a vehicle,if you buy a double cab there`s not enough room and the double cabs look by far the best.Have you seen how much room is left in the back with a double cab,not a lot.I looked at one without rear seats and still didn`t feel there was enough room,it`s to nice to use for work i`d rather buy a new trafic-vivaro they are perfect for WFP.

Look sod what everyone else thinks if you think its practical go for it.
I did insted of having two cars and a van we now have one car and  the l200 double cab so when i pick the kids up from school or where every i dont have to go back home to get the car . If we go out anywhere we go in the l200 it seats the five of us well and in the back icarry 400l tank reel and all the other crap you end up carrying around and dont listen to them go on about feul consumson whats better l200 or having another vechical for carrying the family round in that will cost you more ?

I have an ex aa vw transporter.  Seats in the back for kiddywinks and a 500lt tank in the rear.  No car needed.  If I started again from scratch I'd go for a twincab pick up.  It is big enough if set up properly and they look good for business or pleasure.  If you want one, get one.
This forum is great for asking opinions but alot of people on here think that they know best.  At the end of the day if it suits you go for it.

If you get one dont forget to post some pictures of your set up

Partly right NWH.

They're for farmers to put sheep and bales in, and think they look posh, when actually they look like complete tools. ;D

They've got to be the most ugly looking vehicles around too.

When will the oddities learn?
It's for fields. ;D

Whenever i see them i can`t help thinking that that`s to nice to wreck for work, not that i treat my vehicles badly far from it.I regularly clean and tidy out my van but i would be paranoid about scratching and bashing it.

The older model would be better for WFP system as the pick up part is bigger -  whack a skid tank in there and you can get 800L system fitted nicely. Fuel wise the new model is a lot better though.

Hi LWC

If you were to continue going down the pick up route then I would consider the Navara or the Ford Ranger or the Mazda which is the same as the Ford.  The loading bay on other vehicles is much smaller, if your going to to it look at the loading area rather than the badge on the front.  The nissan navara is the best over all by a long shot though but also the priciest.

The reason why I wouldn't recommend it though is maintaining the system.  Last week I had to get right into the back to do some stuff, I had to take the top off.  Well the bolts to the truckman are in the most impossible to get to place because of the tank.  The job took me 3 hours in total but 2 of those were undoing and doing up 4 bolts for the truckman top.

If need a 4x4 for the country road and your going to fit the system yourself and make sure you don't have any complications in maintaining the system, then get a Navara or a Ranger.

Simon

LWC i wouldnt bother with an L200 my Mrs had one and we sold it after a few months it was a crap ride and drank the diesel.
My advice to you if your buying a pick up is to go for a Hilux,it  will last you for ever and the D4D averages around 35 to the gallon around town well mine does anyway loaded with 400 litres of water ladders on the roof plus all the other tat you carry with you.
