yes it was a very informative day and I've decided to take Dave Ls advice and increase my prices. I'm now charging £1 a ft and if any customers argue about it I shall tell them

'I charge £1 a ft..... BECAUSE I'M WORTH IT!!!' :D :D

anyone want any re-tufting doing?
Title: Re: Leather Day
Post by: Shaun_Ashmore on January 07, 2008, 08:48:23 pm
Re tufting is like matching colour dye, it's easy when you know how the more you do the better you get. I used to do it 20 years ago when I worked for Servicemaster but I'm not sure my eyes are upto it anymore.

The twin, narrow slots look great, but the rest of the wand looks like it's very lightly constructed, similar to one I bought from a Cornwall distributor, a year or so ago, which refused to stop spraying even after stripping and reassembling.

As it only cost £95 I didn't bother to end it back.

Yes it was S*******s, but it was sold as a clearance offer and I couldn't be bothered complaining, so changed the fittings.
The one shown here looks very similar in it's lightweight construction, although the twin slotted head looks interesting.
Your little event seems to have gone well, though no mention of the leather side, as yet.

No mention of leather as they are all sworn to secrecy :-X and they dont want the penalties  ;)

But they are going to get lots of leather work this year  :)

Daves weaving and tufting is going to be a nice little earner too.

I've been thinking about it and there is a flaw in paul's new method of cleaning leather, not everyone has 2 small dogs :-\ :-\,

I can do it because I've a couple of westies but for anyone else going out and purchasing 2 little dogs might be a little bit troublesome, Paul could you get away with 1 big dog ( like a collie or a labrador)

I don't want to say too much but I couldn't find any Pedigree Chum today so used Tescos own brand and it worked just as well, the suite came up lovely

mike

ps 1 tip, don't feed the dog the morning that you are cleaning the suite

Thanks Paul for your efforts in putting the day on.  Always interesting to meet other cleaners to find out how things happen in the real world, not as often, it is portrayed on here and certainly not at "organised" events.

Jamie, did you put on the extra 5p a foot the next day and if so how did it go?

Mike, you have e-mail about the waxing of the diesel.

Anyway, hope it goes as well tomorrow for you as it did for us on Monday.

I would travel up to "see" you again only my sight is worse now than it was then.

Best, Dave.

P.S.  How did you all get on with the purple carpet??

Dave my email ad is different from in my profile so I wouldn't receive it, send it to paul and he can  forward it to me.

I haven't practiced yet as I'm trying to put a retufting toolkit together, it might be helpful if you could list whats in yours.

thanks

Hi Dave,

Yeah put an extra 5p per square foot and she didn't bat an eyelid. Come to think of it I must be too cheap, last year I converted every customer that I went to price first. Lost a load over the phone but there are cleaners cleaning for less than 10p a square foot local to me that get all the price buyers.
New years resolution is less work, more money. Thanks for the encouragement Dave.

Regards

Jamie
Title: Re: Leather Day
Post by: liahona on January 11, 2008, 09:22:24 am
Jamie, really pleased it went ok as I am sure you were holding your breath.  Thing is now is to do it again and again till you have tried to double your prices.  Along the way you will probably plateau at some point as you will then find price resistance.  When you get to this point is when you have to sell to the client why it is that they should use you.

Other than that go find carpet like the purple one to go and clean.  Then you can start at a pound a foot and go from there.

You still have room to put on another 10 or 15p a foot after your already 5p a foot increase before you have to sell yourself as you are right, you are too cheep.  Especaily when you are using one of the best truck mounts around.

You can give me a ring anytime if you need any more help.

If I am up that way to clean you can tag along if you like to see how I do things if it is any help.

Mike, give me a ring too and I will go through the stuff I have in my kit.  Easier than writing a list  on here and we can go through the waxing problem.

My number is 07947 620 495

Best, Dave.

Title: Re: Leather Day

Mick and Tony and anyone else.  Hope this helps.  Just bear in mind that you are trying to recreate how the textile was made in the first place.  So whatever you need to do so is fine.  I just use all sorts of needles , punches even screwdrivers like I showed you.  Really, just make it up as you go along.  If you cant get the tuft or weave or knot just right then keep doing it till it is right or ifnot cheet.  Anway, if you can do the purple carpet and the other small samples you will be fine doing anything else on site.   Having said that, if you get them be careful with the textiles with 3, 4, 5, or 6000 knots per square inch.  They can be a bit tricky.  I didnt have one with me to show you but on these I have used acupunture needles before.  Hey, whatever works, right?

Best, Dave.

Rob I think you have got the wrong end of the stick mate.

Simplicity is exactly what Dave is going on about. The kit he has put pics of costs very little to put together.

There have been lots of occasions were I have come across a burn, bleach mark which can be re tufted/rewoven, and as you say can take minutes to do and can add £30 or £40 to your price ticket.

Thats the very same reason I did the leather days, just to show how easy and quick it is and not be scarred to try. Simplicity that is my system ;)
Title: Re: Leather Day
Post by: carpet guy on January 12, 2008, 05:32:44 pm
Just saying, why burden yourself unnecessarily, when there's an easier way, which is exactly what you are doing with leather, as you say, keeping it simple, :) :) :)

Title: Re: Leather Day
Post by: liahona on January 12, 2008, 05:45:32 pm
Rob,  do you ever have anything nice or positive to say?  What can be more simple than a few needles, a bit of cotton and a pair of pliers?

The idea is, that those who attended the two days so graciously put on by Paul, can now offer a service that not many other cleaners offer.  This means they are better than they were the day before going and accordingly can charge more.  As knowledge should be paid for, at least I think it should be.

This sets them up to approach textile companies to do just re-weaving or re-tufting.  Both of which you have rightly suggested is very inexpensive to kit up for and the rewards are far greater than any type of cleaning or any services to do with this industry.

If that isnt simple then I dont know what is.

20 seconds of actual work and anywhere from £25 to maybe £300 or perhaps £400 .   Simple!!!! Not sure how that is a burden.

Best, Dave.

P.S.  No one has mentioned about an I.I.C.R.C. course,, we all went  to Pauls for free for a day out and are better "cleaners" for the journey.

Ive been busy today, thats why i am late, Not cause Im stll driving around (John, I'll see you) and yes that Shaun nearly made it a very expensive day, but it didnt take more than a few seconds to sus him. Hope you are that sharp at 61, Shaun, and as someone else pointed out it looks loike you will be even grayer than me by then.
Anyway to the main point. Paul you are an absolute top man, top pro and you can buy me a pint anytime you like.
Seriously, a great day, nice to meet new faces and overall a great nice bunch of lads. Learnt a lot, Pauls, time, enthuiasm, energy and generosity for his fellow professionals is to be applauded.
I can not finish withou a special mention for Loraine, Pauls lovely wife (If I were only 25 years younger) thanks very much for putting up with us, the brews, food etc, thank you very much.

I prefer gravity fed

For small jobs I use this type
Title: Re: Leather Day
Post by: *paul_moss on January 13, 2008, 06:16:25 pm
For larger jobs this type is better.
You can pick them up cheap on ebay, see following link.
Make sure you get one with a plastic cup not metal as its easier to clean.
Also with this type you can alter the spray pattern better and adjust the power of the spray.
