Title: Thinking of employing?
Post by: Helen on January 07, 2008, 01:10:58 pm
If you are, this is the sort of thing you may face time after time!

Guy turns up at base 45 minutes ago, starts to prep van for tomorrow?
Me - "Hi there, why are you back so early?" (Knew he had at least 7 hours work on today)
Him - "It rained"....he's right it did, but as he drew up so the sun came out again and anyway we work in the rain and he has done so with no problem before!
Me - "Ok, but it has stopped now, so please go and finish the worksheet"
Him - big sigh, but...but...if...if...
Me- " yes?"
Him - "I am wet to the skin"
Me - "Why? your waterproofs that we supply for you are in the van?
Him- "I find them awkward to work in (no-one else does) so I didn't wear them"
Me - "Well that was your choice not to and the workload should not suffer because of that, so please go and finish the workload.
Him - " I'll do it tomorrow"
Me- "No tomorrow is already fully scheduled as is the rest of the week"
My thoughts - now hang on mate I decide on the scheduling not you!!! >:(
He has gone back out now after sighing, puffing and groaning, but reading between the lines, he really did not want to work today and was trying it on. As soon as I quickly calculated the deductions if he didn't go back out and told him, he went like a shot.
Could do without this sort of aggro, but that is the life of an employer ;)
Warning bells, he will probably call in sick 2morrow!

Yes, should have put the spot checking bit on the first post, but then we do spot check on a regular basis whether there are grumps and groans or not!
Oh for an easier life this year ;D ;D ;D

lol sounds very familiar Helen. I could have written that post.

A favorite scam with my lot at the moment and whats worse is that they would go home and not tell you the work was unfinished if you hadn't caught him and then you feel an idiot when the customer rings up saying why haven't you done my windows.

The only thing that works is to hit his pocket hard, deduct for everything until he either leaves or works to your rules.

exactly, funny how he became dry again once he realised he would lose approx £45.00
he's moving house this weekend aswell, so wants to borrow a van, and finsih early on Friday. The early finish is now out the door and the van....well he had better behave and turn up for the next 4 days :)

I have taken on three window cleaners since the 2nd week in December, two of them could not even string a week together. both of them gone at the end of the first week.

The otherone seems to be OK.

Funny that when you become an employer you frequently use words and phrases like
"seems"
"maybe"
"perhaps"
"if that happens"
"spot check" ;D ;D
"deductions" ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
"maybe they'll leave"
"maybe we should sack 'em"
"having an off day"
 ;)
