Title: YOUR TANK - DO YOU FEEL SAFE WITH IT? POLL
Post by: Captain Scarlet on December 27, 2007, 06:40:08 pm
Well I feel safe as my 500ltr tank is baffled, next to the bulkhead and also strapped into the chassis. But how do you feel about your own tank? Thanks, Luke

I do feel safe or I would not have paid to have it installed

Yes, but it needs strapping down again.

It's worked it's way loose and shifts about 2 or 3 inches either way depending if I'm accelerating or braking.
Whacks the bulkhead a treat sometimes. ;D

I'm not worried though, it's in a separate part of the van to the cabin and about 2 feet below me.

Could do with tightening again though because it's annoying.
Think I'll put some rubber car mats under it first, the strap it down again.
Plastic against metal floor is a bit slidey. :(

Mine has never moved, it is very secure. There is nowhere for my tank to go because it's so close to the bulkhead. So if for some strange reason it did break off in a crash it wouldnt be able to gather any energy/momentum into the cab, Luke

Ionics fitted (tested and the best)

You'll only find out one way if it's fitted well.

One of my best mates ( wfp ) had a head on in his van with 350ltrs essentially pure last week and everything was fine, Luke

You wish Luke, it doesn't have to gain any extra inertia in order for gravity to take a hold, what's it? 650l? 40mph accident, that will be over 40000KG, (66G), even if it would be a splitsecond, your bulkhead will snap like a matchstick, and will rip the floorpan straight out, I hope you atleast secured it to the chassis, and that the straps can atleast withstand forces like the aforementioned.

You'd be hard pressed to reach 1G in normal conditions, so yea 66x that and it will move.

Only safe way to fit a tank is tankframe, and fitted around the chassis.

Quite right squeaks, why does everyone assume you'll only have a crash at high speed and with a full tank....wah!!! ::)

The one time of the day I take it very easy is first thing with a full tank, later in the day you can then speed up a bit ;)

Even if you drive perfect, you only need one idiot to kill you. Full tank or not LMAO. How heavy do you think half of your tank is in an accident anyway? let's say.....250l? Do the math.

Dummies.

Aren't the Ionics ones only tested to 30mph?

If someone crashes into your van head-on you're a gonner anyway, dummy.
You're right at the front of the vehicle.

Don't kid yourself that you'll be ok just because your tank is more secure. ::)
In a good impact in a van that's the least of your worries.

So your saying there is no difference between encap ratings, because in a head on crash your a goner anyway? Or not bother wearing seatbelts? The latest Berlingo's have a 4 star rating. You have a pretty good chance to surive even at 50-60mph. Add a 400l tank, and it's a whole different game.

And in a good impact that's the least of your worries?

Sorry sqeeks, you make some good posts, but this is just pure ignorance/stupidity.

Squeaky I had a head on last year at speed I am still here and i wasnt in a van, didnt think it at the time though i was going to live, I would imagine the tank would split in a high impact crash it is made out of plastic after all.
and from what you said about the way you tank is moving you need to have a word with yourself m8

Squeaky, you know you should have brought a certain make of WFP setup, not only in you have a crash does it save your life ( the tank will cushion the blow of the crash and then a nice imflatable bed pops up and you can have a nice sleep whist safe in the knowledge that tomorrow you will earn 500 + a day  ) , it also means you can charge 75 quid a hour

You're spot-on again Matt.
Too many worriers on here as usual.

I didn't say you wouldn't be ok in a car WW.
In a van though it's different.
Maybe not in a Berlingo type thing with a full size bonnet, but in a van like mine you're right at the front.
You'd be guaranteed no legs whatever happened.

There's a steel wall behind me and the tank is well below me and strapped down.
It isn't going to leap 3 foot in the air and crash through a steel wall. ::)

For that sort of action you'd have squashed yourself anyway.

Come on, get real. It's not dangerous in normal use.

GQC, Its fitted into the chassis not the floor and its a 500ltr tank. All that information was in my first post! Luke

Mine dont move a inch. straped down to the eyebolts that are part of the chassis.

Those eyebolts are not always built for the vans payload but often they are, you have to check with the manufacturer though. Luke

I do feel safe with mine but I wouldn't take liberties with my driving - just in case.
Had mine fitted by Omnipole.  They've had quite a bit of practice so it should be fine.

I hope your driver got out and made sure he didnt lose all the water.

jokes aside 70mph back on they are lucky to be alive sod the tank in that situation I would be more worried about myself looking like the next road kill.

Hope you told them off for driving to close to the van infront.  ::)

70mph after braking????? In nearly all crashes both drivers have a chance to reduce their speeds by some amount, was that the case in this crash?  Luke

Years ago when I was repping I had a sierra (what else!) and braked sharply from 70mph as the car infront slammed on the anchors - I was rear ended but hardly any damage because we were going in the same direction and our relative speeds were probably within ten mph at point of impact.

If I was doing 70 and hit someone in front doing 50, as long as we were travelling in the same direction we should be ok unless one of us skids off into a bridge pillar or something.

It's the head on and side on (90degree) smacks at closing speed that are worse. (usually)

van aqua planed on water, and yes they should have been going slower due to conditions of weather,

That sounds like one heck of a crash test.
I'm delighted to hear no-one was hurt.

I hope it was on a motorway too.
They are the only roads you can legally drive a vehicle of that weight at 70 in the UK
