Title: Leather cleaning the smart way
Post by: *paul_moss on December 24, 2007, 02:16:23 pm
As its the end of the year  my New year res is to give 2 things back to the people in this business, my first is leather training which is  a massive growing market.

Im going to do 2 days next year i early Jan to share my leather techniques.
I have designed a way to clean pigmented leather very quickly, inculding really dirty creams as well as dye transfere. I will also be showing how to do minor repairs and dying quickly and cheaply including colour matching.
This is not like you get taught by the main guys but more like a street wise way of doing it with exceptional results.

The first one is filled by Shaun Ashmore, Dave Washbook and Geoff( Firbre fresh).

The second one I want 3 other people to teach. Please email me as there will be certain requirements ( oh and its free) it is for people who dont trade too close to me for obvious reasons and techs who have been doing leather for a year or 2 and want to develope it.

I hope I'm already booked in?

After going to Paul's last year you'll find a no nonsense approach with common sense, and it's 'microwave' learning so you'll get fastracked so you are knowledgeable (not an expert) in 1 day.

Jamie no I dont travel to or intend to market the Island. I dont concider you as competition, in fact when we meet you will find I have a few of your old customers ;)( local to me of course)

I learnt off Mike ,Haliday in 2003 to market in a 6 mile radius around you ( his words were you will benefit in 5 years from it) guss what he was right, glad I took his advice.

Jamie with the type of business you have and the offer you give, this is a must for you and should add 30% to your top line straight away.

it has really struck home over the last week how important staying within a very local area has influenced my success, I might start a new topic about what I've experienced just lately

I would be interested in learning your leather cleaning technique.

Funny old world.................when I write about how quickly I clean suites, I get nothing but criticism, but then, I'm just a novice, compared to some of the vastly experienced and talented individuals on here.

I have deliberately avoided commenting on, how quickly leather suites can be cleaned and I mean cleaned, as such a comment, will guarantee a " You can't possibly get it clean in that time "

Having only been cleaning leather for around 20 years and having originally visited our local producer of high quality leathers, for advice, before starting, I suppose I still have a bit to learn.

Evening Paul

Been there a few times, over the years. I'm gradually backing out of the cleaning business, but must admit, to having a few ideas for the future, which might keep me around, that is, if my ticker keeps ticking and the limbs do as they're supposed to.

My mentoring post, was intended to alert you to the possibilities, which are creeping out of the woodwork these days, of smiling assassins.

Good luck with your endeavour to raise standards.

No Bennie I would never advise using a brush to clean pigmented leather .

Had a call of Dave L  yesterday and if he is not over in the States working when our leather day is on then he is going to come. He has kindly offered us a demo on how to tuft and weave, so any guys that have been invited have the option to learn how to retuft.( Halliday has already got his knitting needle out in readiness ;D)

Furniture clinic sell a Tampico brush for getting in the grain of dirty suites, do you think that's too harsh if you use it gently?
Title: Re: Leather cleaning the smart way

After cleaning a few suites in my earlier cleaning days with a soft brush and seeing what I thought was the leather coming off I was relieved when I started to clean with sponges and cloths as it doesn't my you poo yourself.

Can't wait for my pilgimage next week, after going last year I learned so much providing you take your common sense with you!

Shaun

PS Don't forget it is real world stuff, I'll have to be retaught because I'm not common!!

As I have no knowledge of Paul's methods, I don't intend posting conflicting views, or opinions, other than to comment that I have NEVER   " followed the book " in anything I've done in life, always feeling there might be better, methods, tools, products, etc, but with leather, caution is paramount.

I've been fortunate, or maybe just lucky, in never ruining a client's furniture, but I have come across many leather suites, which had been treated incorrectly and had the potential, to cause me a serious problem.

The most important thing about cleaning leather, is to be as certain as you can be, that you can clean it safely and without compromising your good name.

As there are only so many ways of " cracking an egg " I suspect we have come to much the same conclusions, but using different products.

Not surprisingly, the training providers are avoiding involvement in this thread, but they must be staining at the leash, desperate to post warnings of potential disaster.

I rarely use brushes myself, but use them occasionally.

Hope the day goes well and leads to greater cooperation in the future. It's good to talk !
Title: Re: Leather cleaning the smart way
Post by: Shaun_Ashmore on December 29, 2007, 08:03:18 pm
Like all training it's only good if you take it on board, I know of a cc that has a NCCA qualifacation/membership and does practically nothing that he was taught by them. As an individual it is up to you BUT I bet the trainers/suppliers won't lke it because Paul is doing it for free and also the suppliers are not being looked upon as specialists at this moment in time, Paul is!

Knowing Paul and his fastidious ways I feel the information and techniques will be safe, why would I want to go and waste a day of my precious time if I knew Paul wasn't good at what he does?

Perhaps you have forgot Shaun, but Leather Technical and Training are currently doing free full day courses.
and a few months ago I attended a free evening seminar they did, so lets give credit where credit is due.
Not sure what Furniture Clinic have programmed for 2008.
Title: Re: Leather cleaning the smart way
Post by: Shaun_Ashmore on December 29, 2007, 08:30:56 pm
I appreciate what LTT are doing but you'll find Paul's 'workshop' different as he gets straight into it and there's only 4 at a time so you get a go at ask and answer as you go along and in all honesty LTT are wanting you to buy their products so they are wining and dining you (which is good business) but Paul is selling nothing, I think you'll find the 'experience' is a different one.

Don't know what Ben at Furniture Clinic is doing he seems to have more customers than you can shake a stick at, but I do know that when he is teaching that he won't have more than 4 at a time.

Shaun

This tread has grown quite interesting.
Still getting lots of emails for requests for places, but as I posted a few days ago all places are takn and there is even a waiting list  :o.

Just to clarify things, I am not and dont profess to be a leather specialist. If you want this type of knowledge go and do a course with Ben at Furniture clinic or Andy at LTT, they are the specialists in this game.
I am a carpet and upholstery cleaner only.I have a knack to pickup things quickly and able to self learn and change/develope things to suit my end result.

What I will show the guys is a way to clean pigmented leather very quickly in a way they have not seen before, this works well on light coloured suites that are heavily soiled and are hard to clean and very time consuming, and when you cant get all that muck out of the grain even after scrubbing, this way will do it fast and also removing dye transfer quickly.

Also showing repairs and recolouring the fast way.

Also Dave Leahona will be coming on the 7th do demonstrate retufting and samples for us to work on.

Aldi are doing a sunday special today. Its a stapler gun and staple puller. I bought one when they did them last year and its a great bit of kit for only £3.99.For this type of thing you would pay loads more.
If you havent yet got one then grab one whilst they have them in stock.
The guys coming to my leather day will be shown a neat trick with it  ;)

Just a thought Paul, if you were to video the event then a few more of us may be able to benefit from some of these techniques, it's a bit far for me to come otherwise would love to, but is always good to have a look at what others are doing!

Dave Liahona sent me a video of rug cleaning last year and it was immensely interesting and informative (sure he wont mind me mentioning it  :))

Just seeing the process in action is enough to give you confidence to go out and do it!

have been cleaning leather for a year or so now and dont particularly find it easy, anything to speed up the process is got to be bonus,

depends on which way you look at it, I look at this as an investment, I've already had another 4 calls today for work so why aren't I doing the work and getting the money in? I'm swanning off to Wales to improve myself so I can be better and get quicker, I'll easily make the money up when I'm cleaning leather in the future.

Of course its an investment Shaun, completly agree with you.
Did 3 courses myself during 2007 - cost me a few bob, but well worth it.
Just that, if a bit of the demo could be video'd and then put on here more would benefit.
Probably not possible though, never mind.
Title: Re: Leather cleaning the smart way
Post by: Shaun_Ashmore on December 30, 2007, 09:24:23 pm
a Demo is for sales purposes, being there before I'd say it's more like the NCCA hands on experience day but no formal presentation bit and it moves faster because there are fewer there, it's crammed with worldly cleaning techniques, out of all of the courses it's the one I won't miss.

Shaun
Title: Re: Leather cleaning the smart way

One difference with having a video tho is the fact you can watch it time and again and refresh your memory as to what to do etc,  on most training courses you probably only retain about 25% of it, if that!

Ok it may be not as good as being there and being hands on, but if thats not possible for all then it's the next best thing :)
