Title: wfp whats going on?(bans)
Post by: lee_dewing on December 22, 2007, 12:28:48 pm
i know everyone probably exhausted this subject!
i don't have internet at home so time on here is limited.

Basically i got fwc-mag yesterday and in the letters section someone had mentioned this subject.
the reply from the federation was that the government were letting the water companies update the hose pipe ban laws as they were introduced 62 years ago.
A hose pipe ban would now include water fed poles as well in it.
this is pretty frightening stuff!

got away with  it last year due to the water board having to impose a drought order to affect those using water fed poles.

Hose pipe bans are alot more common than drought orders!
Are we all going to end up back  on ladders in the summer months and i don't know about you lot but isn't it going to get a bit complicated with the customer seeing you up a ladder one month and using a wfpole the next,
I know alot of my customer have excepted the pole but would rather it done trad.

any one on here know what's going on?
thanks lee

Problem with collecting rainwater is a hose-pipe ban is likely to last months, literally, even once its started raining a hose-pipe continues to be enforced.

If a window cleaner uses lets say 300 litres a day, he works 22 days a month, and the ban lasts 3 months, then hes going to need to store 20,000 litres for that period of time, thats 100 water butts, thats £3,000.00 in water butts alone if theyre £30.00 each.

Or a bloody big pond.

Its not impossible, but if thats the route your going down I suggest you start digging today.

Matt

Can't do that by law really, it's putting people out of business isn't it? I'm sure there is a law for that somewhere. :)

Or all move to the Netherlands, plenty of water there.  ;)

I don't suppose that they will ban it. But I would certainly consider what your contingency plan would be in the event of one.
I am considering going wfp in the future, but these scare stories don't help with decision making...

If WFP is ever banned because of water companies, then I shall be the first to ignore the ban and make my protest to the newspapers and television media.
I have a serious illness and unfortunately don't have the option of going back to ladders to clean using the traditional method. >:(
I am prepared to see how far solicitors could enforce the WAHD through a no win , no fee situation and I'm prepared to go to prison if needs be to stand my ground. Prison will probably be full with all the pensioners who refuse to pay their council tax anyway ;D
I'm not going to lose any sleep over it and will just wait and see what happens in the future. :)

Even if you collect rainwater the ban still applies. They made that clear from the start. You can't use bore holes, water from a stream or drive to another area to fill up either.

I'll be interested to see what happens as we have a hosepipe ban here in the SE most years.

It's a funny thing that many people are going over to  WFP but it is shown to be very difficult/impossible to use in freezing weather and could be banned in the summer.

With our weather there is very little window of opportunity to use it.  :D

I think I opened a can of worms there.  ;D

I did say I didn't think they would ban it. (Although you never know what daft ideas could be tried.)

Still, you should consider a contingency plan - not just for bans. What if your equipment was destroyed in a fire? Always worth having a plan to deal with things like this.

Think its all bull to be honest in order to stop us working its the Goverment not the water companies who have to make the decsision of a draught order then if they do most companies can seek compensation. A hosepipe ban does not stop companies using water only a draught order does and there aint been one in the South of england for donkeys years.

P&r, not saying your wrong but as i read the article in window talk it said that the government was giving the water companies more power and one thing it said was to stop the use of water fed poles.
having said that i just found this post on cleaning pros.

http://www.another forum.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb2.2/YaBB.pl?num=1195311108

Seems that i think it is saying that the house holder can't use wfpoles( during a hose pipe ban)
or have i got the wrong end of the stick?

I suppose my backup plan would be to use a ladder to clean windows as they are not banned and can be used on the condition that a ladder stability device is used anything that was condsider to be dangerous i would use a pole with an ettore backflip or unger vice versa i would use gg3 doing pole work.

I wonder what the consequences would be if you were not meant to use wfp.
Is it a £2000 fine?
and if so how would you get caught
would more than likely be joe public grassing than actually the waterboard catching you!

As I understand it the ban on washing windows with hosepipes ( which is how they sais it ) would be included in hosepipe bans in future, not drought orders.
I am still not convinced that anyone, including the Water Companies knows what it means in reality. In the last hose pipe ban I couldn't wash my car with a hose but I could drive down to the hand car wash and pay someone else to wash it with a pressure washer on a hose. Mad.
