what is a safe ppm to use. ive changed my resin but showing 12ppm still. dont know why this is happening. it used to be 0 ppm when i bought it 2 months ago
-
Personally I wouldnt use more than 000, but my supplier told me 005, Luke
-
how often do you change resin then or how do you do it. i made a right mess and got resin everywhere. does that make a difference??. sorry newbie here to wfp
-
With nearly 3 years 'under my belt' with wfp, I normally run my di to 7ppm with no adverse effects. I have seen forum posts from other that suggest 15ppm is just about acceptable.
-
My resin last about 6 months!!!!! If you'r filling a di vessel, only fill it just above 3 quaters as the beads expand, Luke

what size di vesil are you using or is it one of the small ones after the ro unit
-
My actual tds is 34, and I have cleaned my own house spotless with it at that ppm, Luke

iv got the small blue di vessel after my merlin unit. after it goes through merlin it says 29 ppm then after resin 12 ppm.. maybe i put too much resin in as lid wont screw on properly...im getting bit worried lol

I take it you're using an RO before the resin as you live in a hard water area? What is the TDS of the water immediately before entering the DI vessel? I have used water at up to 004 TDS but I prefer to keep it to 000 (or maybe 001 at a push). I've heard of people going up to 010 and a bit beyond but not done it myself.

yea before its 369 so quite high. is there a better way to get 000ppm???

I have a Merlin too. A couple of things to be aware of here. The TDS from a Merlin is usually higher if it has just started up after being stationary for a while and takes a few litres to settle down again. Is that 029 reading being taken after the water has been flowing for at least a few minutes? Does it drop after a while. Mine can come out at 080 or even 090 after standing for a while but soon drops down to 006 - 008. To allow resin to last longer, it may help to direct the water away from the DI vessel for a couple of minutes after start-up (I pull the pipe off and run it into a bucket when I can be bothered). This can mean that if the resin has been in use for a while and the first water out from the DI vessel will also have a higher than 000 TDS reading. This would take longer to drop than the water from the RO as it has to fill up the vessel and go up the riser tube etc. Of course, the TDS effect would be diluted as it would be mixing with pure water too. So, after the flow re-starts, consider running off the first few litres before it reaches the DI vessel. This will increase the resin life a bit. Also, consider using two DI vessels so you don't need to throw resin away until it is fully spent. Consider too, not taking your TDS readings until a few minutes after the flow restarts after a stop. Apologies if I'm teaching Granny to suck eggs but you did ask :)

no i took the reading straight away. hopefully thats the problem then. mad though iv only had it 2 months and purified prob only 1500 litres and tds went so high.
-
morgan it does this, its down to salt diffusion when the merlin isn't producing water, its quite normal and as the shiner says just run off the first 5ltrs or so before running it through the di.
I have a little tap on mine before the 1st di which when open diverts the water into the drain, I close it after 5mins so the water then goes into di1 then di2
I use 2500ltrs a week on my own and a bag does me a year, even then I don't really need to change it but I only use water at 0ppm or maybe 1ppm.

IMO and IME a resin chamber partially filled will channel, thus a percentage of water going through will be untreated and contaminate what should otherwise be cleansed water.

No, a tightly packed vessel will channel, not a loosely packed one.
think about it, if the resin is loose it can move around.
-
god im doing it all wrong lol. ill have another go 2noz. taa for the merlin advise..

A similar thing can happen if a seal isn't quite seated right when you reassemble your DI vessel. At least it can with mine. I have the Freedom one. Don't know if yours works simillar.

Let it run for a while before taking the readings then. My RO can take a good 5 minutes to settle down. The knock on effect to the water in the DI vessel may take at least an extra 5 minutes after that. One day, when you've got time, fill your van mount (or whatever you fill) and allow things to run a good 15 minutes to be on the safe side - then do your TDS tests. Could you post the results as I would be interested to see how it goes?

the really small one?

like this?
in my opinion you need a bigger di vessel if that is the one you have aboce. i had a small one and it was useless. one this size has lasted me over a year now, mind you, my ppm is around 050

heres the link too, you could always get a bigger one too

I know it might seem a silly question, but have you got the di tank the right way round, ie have you got the inlet and outlet the wrong way round? I have had a few people do this accidently after changing the resin in their di vessel.
-
i didnt know there was a right and wrong way on the di vessel both ends are the same on mine?? well my water is now saying 22 ppm after resin spmething is madly wrong. iv just emtied it all out and gona try again when all dry 2moz. so if i fill it 3 quarters and get the inlet and outlet the right way i should be back in business..oh and run merlin for 5 mins before i fill. hope all goes well tomoz and i get 000ppm.

have you knocked the filter inside the resin vessal? if you have it will not be working correctly. I took mine to bits so I know how to fault find if needbe, put tipex on the out end to save problems, all though many have in & out on some dont.
I put the resin on wrong way once lol and shot resin straight out of it, luck I didnt have it contected to tank or that would have been a nightmare.
