Title: i hate ladders
Post by: crystal.clear on November 28, 2007, 08:58:48 pm
one of my employers fell from a ladder today. we are complete waterfed but a customer asked him for a favour. to climb up the ladder and unhook a flower box. my lad being nice said no problem. climbed up and ladder slipped out. he is now in frimley park hospital with a neck brace on tied to the bed and not aloud to move and a broken wrist. waiting on results to see how bad it is. i have now thrown the ladder away and will never by another one.

That's nasty!   I hope he soon recovers.

Did the ladder slip, or did he slip off the ladder?

you know I finally got my WFP up and running and yesterday slipped on a patio just walking round the back of a house and today nearly slipped on decking
Mad to think about it that I was working alone before and used to use my bucket as a ladder stop

Hope he is back to work soon.

Wish i had a pound for all the customers who have asked me to jobs like that.

You know what i mean..

Oh could you just check if my gutters blocked.
Is that a bird nest behind my Sky dish.
Can you get my sons football.
Is there a tile mising.
Could you push the window shut tight as it wont close properly from inside.
 ;D ;D

It's not the ladder, it's the user who was at fault. I know you don't want to hear that but it's a fact !. Ladders are fine if used correctly.
Hope he makes a full recovery soon.

You are right, it is getting slippery out there. I work alone and have safety feet fitted to the ladder, use a sandbag or peg the feet if necessary, and still miss out a couple of windows because it is unsafe.

There's alot to be said for just talkin them off our vans FOREVER. If we don't get a job, we dont get a job. But we would all know that from this day onwards, we're all gonna be safe as houses. If custys ask, just say they got nicked and you use them so seldomly, it aint worth partin with £100 to get a new one. Just a thought  ;)

Relax I'm having a laugh...bit like when the wfp guys were banging on about ladders being banned last summer.

Patios are so slippery this time of year - I will never clean windows from a ladder again. And I certainly wouldn't ask an employee to do so either.

WFP banned in spring? Not round here me old China!

I am guessing your trad then m8, good on you if your getting your own back, I heard that ladders where getting banned a few years ago when wfp was up and coming (I recon that was started by a supplier)

I did get told by a customer the other day that she was please that I am now wfp as the ban on ladders coming in on march or april meant I could not clean her windows anymore, now I have not heard this, but she upped my price and said thank you, who am I to tell her different.

I'm trad because where i work wfp isn't an option....believe me if it was I'd switch over tomorrow.

Anyway wfp ain't gonna be banned and neither are ladders.

I don't know why people start these silly rumours...as we didn't have enough to worry about.

I don't know how many wfpers there are nationwide but it must run into many 10s of thousands...they're not gonna want all these w/cs signing onto the old rock and roll. Besides the wfp manufacturers will grease the right palms if the water companies start making threatening noises ;D

As a responsible employer you should have gone and inspected the accident site as soon as possible after the incident.  If there is a claim or an inquiry, someone is going to want to know what action you took afterward.

Not only that, you could take photographs to use as warnings when training other employees.

hi ian,
No offence but i was more concered getting to hospital to see him than going to inspect where he fell off. maybe wrong of me.

Crystal Clear, I know what you mean. Your concern is for the immediate welfare of your employee.
However, being the target of some bureaucrats (not in window cleaning, some voluntary work) I now detest them. Face to face they seemed quite satisfied, after they had left they produced a report that nearly had the place closed down. We held on by the skin of our teeth...
Just beware, because they make judgements without good reason IMHO, and they may become involved in this unfortunate incident.
