Hi,
For an appealing lead winning economic leaflet, what should I expect to pay?

Do you for printing or distribution?.
For printing expect to pay no more than £60.00 per 5k full colour on 130gsm.
for distribution expect to pay nowt.

This question is the chicken and egg, which one come first?
First you need to know the response rate then you can decide what you will spend to get new prospects. you do this by testing you offer, copy etc first.
For every new customer you should be looking at a one to one return on your investment.
so say you do a drop of 5000 leaflets and you get six responses and four jobs totaling £400 then take out your drop cost and give you what you can spend on printing

The problem with that is you do not know the respose rate until you have dropped thousands of leaflets and you need to keep the faith.
The other problemis defining response rate.
To me response rate is enquiries recevied.
I then want to know what my conversion to actual jobs is.

In answer to question cost of distribution, you could go down the Free Newspaer route cost would be in region of £22 per thousand but would be mixed in with loads of other leaflets.
Employ a leaflet distribution company can you trust them.
Employ pensioner or mum needing a part time job while kids our at school.
This if you were paying minmum wage would cost £60 a thousand aprox.
Get someone to do it at so much a thousand.
The problem is finding reliable people.
When you do treat them well
In my opinion best method is DIY if you can asemble a gang of helpers, could be local kidson Saturday for example again if you employed kids on regular basis you could have problems with Child Labour regulations insurance risk assesment etc and if one got run over sent to prison, for manslaughter

to tell someone to be happy with a 1-1 ratio without knowing their circumstances is risky. remember 1-1 means you are working at a loss, unless you have a fair wedge of cash behind you how long can you keep this up?
the theory behind 1-1 relies on the believe that the customer will return or reccommend a friend, but how quickly will they use your services again? what if they don't tell their friends?
the best response I've had is when I employed a helper, he helped me set up them went leafleting, when I finished I called his mobile and he returned, we also together spent approx 90mins a day leafleting.
I got a call every day from the exact area we had leafleted that day,

My business was built using leaflets although I am now internet based
I still believe leaflets are a good way to get established.
Firstly design a leaflet which either has attractive prices with an offer, or something else which will cause people to ring, such as '20% discount on all bookings taken before 31 st January'.
To test how good a leaflet is you have to be sure where and how it was delivered, this means you and trusted helpers need to deliver it yourself.
There is a world of difference between a nicely folded leaflet pushed through the letter box and one screwed up , half in , haf out.
If you are delivering yourself you should be able to get 2-3 jobs per thousand, but this will take several months and is why it's no good giving up after the first 5000.I used to do between 1 and 2 thousand a week depending on how busy I was.
When you have established this you can look for distributors, I fould the best way was to find your own, which is difficult but is the nearest you will get to doing them yourself.

I paid around £1000 for 20,000 full colour tri folds, I have a customers son deliver 500 for £30, although when we are working, we generally deliver a few to twenty or thirty properties close by, which seems to stimulate a decent amount of calls.
