Title: I'm fed up of cleaning windows!
Post by: Richy L on November 21, 2007, 02:49:04 pm
does anybody else feel like this sometimes?
Sometimes i wish i did something else like building or electrics. I find work so boring,(and i already use a radio). I need to vary my work somehow i think. What do you guys do?

I feel like this most of the time and think about getting a job but would not get half as much money and have to work for twice as long
I also like the freedom of being able to either work hard take it easy or have a day off
To keep the motivation up i have a series of targets like how much for the week/month or year also booking a holiday so you can countdown to when you go away i find helps purchase of a luxury item when you reach a target
At the moment i am saving for a months holiday to Canada and a new van for the new tax year you need targets or you will just wonder aimlessly through and eventually just give in
This time of year does not help though with the cold wet and dark days

Roll on summer  8)

heheh,
Yeah i know all the benifits like money, im the boss n all, but i just go through phases.
its probably down to the time of year like you said dean.

i just fancied a moan.
It would be good to make a little money on the side doing something else though, just to keep it varied. It would be good if i could sell some of my art work, but theres no money in it!

The grass is always greener on the other side , (until you get there and realise what a big mistake you've just made) ;D

Set yourself some goals to give yourself a challenge, or plan a vacation or take up a hobby, break your normal routine and have a day off for no other reason than the fact that you can do this being your own boss :)
Remind yourself you've got less perks working routine hours, being talked down to by a boss, watching time pass so slowly in a job you dislike because you are bored at the moment because you can't motivate yourself  :(

If its too Hot in the Kitchen, You know what to do.

All jobs have their drawbacks, even if your a Porn Star.

You have to have the right mentality for w/cleaning or you will struggle and your job satisfaction will be very low.

I have nearly left w/cleaning a few times since 1980, which is when I started.

Keep setting yourselves targets. Try to get some work in the country, diffrent villages etc its suprising how it can lift your spirits working in the countryside.

I love wfp, I crack on during the day and time just flys past. If your earning a good whack it certanily helps to keep you positive. But at the end of the day If you HATE cleaning windows change your job because its not worth doing something just for the money.

I like it because its a job I do well without the responsibilty that some trades would put on you. IE if your a plumber and a house Blew up after you installed a new Boiler then you are in the POO.

Concentrate on the positives.

Nel :P

Funny thing is - i get job satisfaction after cleaning a dirty house with filthy frames and seeing it gleam. I find the job ok but struggle more with customers.

Although i need more customers what i meant was - the jobs ok it's the customers that wind me up and get me down.
My approach to gaining work is i get reccommended (slow process), doorknocking (depressing but quicker) through my signwritten van (still slow). I haven't leafletted as such i simply pop a business card through any grubby houses if no-one is in. I've come to the obvious conclusion that building a business/round is not an overnight process unless you buy a round which is something i don't agree with. My van is definately becoming recognised in my town at the moment. Certainly other cleaners are spotting it very quickly,  i get strange people waving and then i spot their ladders etc inside their cars. I've met and chatted to several of them and they all seem much the same. Interestingly several have only been going a couple of years.

Hey Ricky if your not happy cleaning windows then try something else, your only 23 after all!! If I was you I would learn a decent trade while you are still young, something that you can always fall back on if you need it, something like plumbing, electrics, carpentry, bricklaying ect. You can always go back to window cleaning if it dosn't work out, or is there something that you really enjoy doing? a hobby maybe that you could turn into your living, because thats the only real way to be truly happy with your work, and that is to do something that you love to do!!
Very few of us could really say that cleaning windows is what we really love to do, many like me love the freedom and lifestyle that we get from window cleaning, but not actually the job itself.

You make it sound like we are second to a good job, when i fact this is a fantastic trade to be in, if you have the right mind set, any business owner needs to have this, I am a trained plumber and chef, do I do these ? the answer is no the reason why I earn more window cleaning, may not be the most glamerous of jobs but IMO is fantastic, yes some people later in life (and I aint knocking you) realise they work a 9 till 5 5 days a week get stress all the time then go into window cleaning. they are late starters are have seen others doing better than them without the hassle of someone telling you what to do.

Ian.

p.s a decent trade ???????? Please dont insult us window cleaners

if you say so.......... There are alot of window cleaners in the UK, the thing that is different is there are professional window cleaners then there are the others, I am not here to argue with you but I think your totaly wrong. Window cleaning correctly is a skill, if i was wrong why do I pick up so much work ?

no offical training

any1 can get a bucket and cloth and clean a window ( thus a window cleaner )

it takes less than a week to learn how to sqeegee to a acceptable standard

being a professional window cleaner does not make it a trade

im not having a dig at window cleaning / cleaners, but its not a trade

i mentioned 1 week to be able to sqeegee to a fairly decent standard, i only mentioned 1 week as thats what i feel it took me

Saying that, loads dont even do that anymore, they just use WFP

and i hate to say it, i let my 4 yr old clean downstairs with my lightweight setup, i showed her on the french doors and she said i can do that  :) she did the whole of the conservatry and did a good job,

is she a tradesperson ?? ??

Saying that, loads dont even do that anymore, they just use WFP

and i hate to say it, i let my 4 yr old clean downstairs with my lightweight setup, i showed her on the french doors and she said i can do that  :) she did the whole of the conservatry and did a good job,

is she a tradesperson ?? ??

She could well be, and good on her bless  ;)

I know im only 23, but i'm married and have a mortgage, so starting a new job from basic pay isnt really an option. But i do like being the boss ... i guess im spoilt really, i went straight from school into window cleaning, so apart from weekend jobs when i was in school, i never really had to work for anyone else.

I have a Trade which I left nearly 30 years ago.

I trained for three years on leaving school at colledge on day release and I have my City and Guilds and a Master Bakers Certificate on top of that.

It was a great job. I loved it. I had Four offers when I was leaving the trade to run Bakerys.

That job had its draw backs, Long hours, Early mornings, And very poorly paid. But you got a lot of job satisfaction.

Would I ever go back? Not on your Nelly.

I know which side my bread is buttered on. I will use my loaf and stay w/cleaning.

To earn the money you can at w/c without the stress or the responsibilty that other jobs entail is in my opinion without equal.

I just had a new Boiler fitted last month and talking to the plumbers who installed it I enquired what the going rate is for plumbers in this area. I was chuckling inside knowing I earn a lot more per hour. There job is not glamoures, quite the oppossite when you see them crawling under the floor boards getting all dirty. Not for me thanks.

Trade or No Trade w/cleaning Rules in my book. Freedom, Choice of lifestyle. After nearly 30 years of w/c it has been very good to me and my family.

My lads have tried it but it was not for them. The youngest did it for a year and a half. But hes far happier working in a Bank. My other son does a bit of w/cleaning now and again when hes resting between acting jobs.

we're driving around, different places talking to different people and earnings loads of dosh. Great job as long as it is WFP of course

But i stopped doing that and started a little window cleaning round on saturdays(just bungalows). i worked out i could earn four times as much in a quarter of the amount of time!
