Title: Yell.com yes?
Post by: cleanability on November 13, 2007, 04:03:55 pm
Had Yell.com on the phone. Does it work? Or will I be wasting my £500 plus VAT to be in it ?

I live on the outskirts of Gateshead and went with them, because my postcode is for a village on the outskirts and not smack in Gateshead, I didn't even get listed.
Make sure your business address in the main area you want to target or its a waste of money.

I would invest the money in your website, making sure that its is well linked and high in the listings, we stopped all advertising with yell and yellow pages, the rep in his new BMW was a little cheesed off, to say the least.

Too expensive for the return I got. Thi syear I reduced my spending with them. I do get calls, not enough in themselves to justify but then there are referals and repeats.  If you deal, dont accept their first offer - haggle, worth a try.

Newport South Wales Pete

I would leave it then mate. It works fantastically for me but geographics plays a part as does knowing how to use it properly (I used to sell it) and I'm not sure that Newport is the right kind of place for this type of medium. That said I'm surprised it did'nt work well for Martin as Brighton has the sort of social demographics to support using.

Good from yell.com's perspective and they don't discount no matter what.
Also once you sign up you cant get out of the contract, if you are paying yearly, unless you shout and scream.....

Yell.com is there to be used - you can register your details without paying - but obviously those who pay get better exposure - the effectiveness of Yell.com is not going to vary that much throughout the country so the feedback about 74 views (?) at a cost of 49 quid and no actual jobs is very interesting

In terms of the print media its interesting to see the fallout of the fight between The Phone Book and Yellow Pages - for me personally I decided to drop YP and go with PB - YP used to be very good but had dropped off - and although PB is very well distributed and will probably win the war in the long run (Thompson prob going nowhere) but then will they up their prices and will YP respond by cutting their prices to get lost ads back from PB? Interesting times - at present all I do is PB plus 200 a month on local newspapers - most valuable tip is to try to get  ear positions (top rt or top left) on the front page in your local freesheet - its working for me!

Some good info there on who not to advertise with!! My question is what or who is best when it comes to advertising?

Cheers

"You" are the best advertising.  Most I have found would rather put out thousands of leaflets as opposed to simply talking to people to get work.  Not only that but if you talk to people your more likely to not get turned down or price shopped at.  And you get to charge a higher price too.

Best, Dave.
