what is the point on this pin? I am a little confused. I have never used a swivel as only started a little while ago, hoses are fun for me at the mo ::)

Swivel allows you to work from the side as opposed to square on to the glass it means you can reach awkward windows at strange angles. The problem with this swivel (we call it mk ll) is that sometimes it can pop the ball out a little on the vertical strokes - the pin stops this happening.

Apart from preventing the ball from popping out, it also makes the whole unit more rigid- thus easier/better to work with.

No, only if you put the pin through the wrong way. once you look at it in the flesh it will become clear which way the pin goes through ;)
