I use 50 litres in a year , with DI
How much do you use
-
I buy 10 litre bags,.. and at the rate I'm going, it'll last me between 10 and 11 months. I only use it to polish after the RO though as my tap TDS is 300 odd!
-
My box isnt there i use about 600 litres a year
-
None.
I don't make my own water. ;D

I dont know anyone who makes their own water unless they have divine powers ;D

wouldn't it be cheaper to buy an RO
-
yes.
-
600 litres??!!!!
Costly business!
how much water do you use a day?
-
50 Ltrs. 2 x 11Ltr DI only, 400Ltr van mount.

I use approx 650 litres a day
I have thought about an RO , but when you way it all up that too can become expensive.
Decent 40/40 £400
holding tanks £90 for 2 ibc
booster pump £100
tansfer pump and hose £200
associated plumbing and electricity wiring etc £100
other filters/ softeners etc £50.
Then whatever repairs upgrades etc year on year.
At the moment i just fill straight into the van through di vessels. No worries at all, just need to change the resin about every 2 - 3 weeks.

For 650 litres a day you could use a RO-Man 300GPD unit no problem with a £20 recycled IBC.
Or alternatively, a merlin will produce more than that amount overnight,.. I'd just slap one in the back of the van and keep the DI cylinders as they are after it.
The waste from a merlin is a bit tragic,.. but even with the extra bit on a water bill it'd pay for itself in 4 - 5 months.
-
Dave,
I bet your supplier is giving you a good deal then.
-
I pay about £80 a bag , thinking about it i probably use 900 litres a day, one van uses 600 and the other about 300.
I have been trying to find cheap storage and the best i could find is 2 ibc for £90
As for a 300 gpd ro, i have heard so many bad stories, mainly low water pressure not producing enough. My house has low water pressure and my garage is 100 feet away from the house so will probably encounter loads of problems and i am not ready for them yet.
My way is simple maybe a bit more costly, but if i lose even 1/2 a day due to not having water that would cost me dearly.
I have been thinking going down the RO route maybe one day, it is not just about the money, it is about time effort and reliability.
i dont want to be having to flush ro's every day and whatever else needs repairing etc, its bad enough stopping the leaks in the vans as well as air locks and the occassional dodgy wiring connector,I suppose with an ro set up theses problems would amplify at least two fold.

Dave.
If you have low preasure water put a booster pump on.
I have a 300gpd & not had a prob in nearly 2 years. Water goes in at an avarage 0f 300ppm & always comes out 4-5ppm. I change the filters about every 6-9 months at a cost of £30.

Dave Morris:
You would be better off going down the 4040 RO route with a booster pump with 1 or 2 IBC storage tanks and a transfer pump. It would work out a lot cheaper than your DI costs even with a low TDS of say 100. You'd only have to change the pre filters every 3-months and the RO membrane every 2-3 years. It's worth considering.
Thanks for considering me last week for that work offer involving the 'Boots' chain locally but, I only clean external windows with WFP because of my arthritus illness. I'm always happy to accept any new commercial or large domestic work so long as it doesn't involve internal cleaning using a squeegie. :)

wheres the cheapest place for resin as im due to buy a bag

I've just put a couple of bags on ebay, it's the cheapest one. Tulison MB 115, top notch.

Thanks for the advice.
I will keep you in mind for further work, might have another multi retail contract coming soon.

Apart from anything else, if you are on a water meter and are using 900 litres a day you would need to get through at least another 900 litres a day as waste water. I know water is dear in Cornwall - say about £2 per 900 litres for easy reckoning. 22 days per month worked = £44 per month = about £500 a year for extra water wasted by the RO. So that's another £500 a year to deduct from your £1,800 a year resin bill. Most of the items you listed are either permanent or only need renewing occasionally (less often than a year) but you are spending say a grand a year ands saving yourself loads of potential aggro. Sounds reasonable to me.

If it did last twice as long I would certainly be interested. In fairness, I have a bag and a half of Dowex resin at the mo so hopefully won't need any just yet. I have found that in our case the Dowex resin has lasted longer than Rohm and Haas for example.
i will keep my eye out for this brand in future though.
Dowex also lasts longer than purolite.

i switched to wfp earlier this year(april) all seemed a bit daunting at first but soon becomes clearer so i am no expert by any means but 600 litres of resin a year seems like a lot surely the cost of an ro cannot compare to that sort of outlay for resin. My tapwater varies alot but is never less than350 and can be more than450 so far have changed filters twice (12 quid or so with vat and postage cleantech) and used 20 litres of resin this allows me to keep tds down to no more than002 but sometimes let it get up to 004 if cant be bothered to change resin dont know about long term probs but so far i have spent more on taps hose fittings and tail connectors than any thing else but that might be my hamfisted treatment of the gear!

i changed my resin in over a year now, have a little 10 " bottle after RO
tds in is around 050

Bear in mind that Dave is based in Cornwall and the water down there is a bit on the soft side

I have used one 25kg bag of resin in 2 years.
I use about 3,000 ltrs of pure water a week.
I have no spare resin at the moment. But my New 4040 memmbrane which I have had for 6 months is giving 0 tds before the resin.
Tap tds is 114 at the moment. i use a booster pump which speeds filling the storage tank up. My RO fills my storage tank with a ltr of pure water every 15 seconds. Approx 4 hrs to fill my tank.
I dont have any hassles with it really.
If I was DI only I would use a 25kg bag a month. Cost to me over 2 years,£1,920.00 and counting.
For me ro made ecnomic sense from day one.Its a lot less hassle then di only as I would be forever changing resin . I have smaller Di vessels in the van which allows me to carry more water. Its faster to fill my 800 ltr tank when I come home from my Ibc tank. 16 mins max for 800ltrs.
So I come home from work and in approx 15 mins My van is all set up for the next days work. I look at how much water I then need to fill my Storage tank and I know when to come back out at night to switch the water and electric off.
Because you fill your van tank so quick with a 1" hose and a pump you will hardly ever flood your van out. If filling from the tap it will take you so long you will do something else and forget your filling your van up, water all over the place yet again.
I am not on a meter so it was very easy for me to decide which way to go. I dont think I will be buying any resin in 2008, maybe in 2009 if my tds starts to climb from my ro.But Iam hoping 2010 will be the next time I buy resin or have to change my DI vessel again.
My first membrane only lasted 18 months. I have learnt the hard way how to look after a membrane. But it stills beat di only by some margin. For money saved, Time saved and Hassle saved. NOt to mention it looks pretty good to own and feels good to own. A bit like having a sense of pride in your van set up,Its a Fantastic feeling when you open the van doors in a morning and look at your set up. I never got that feeling with my ladders on the roof rack of the car and the bucket of water in the car.
