Title: A day with the media pheww! what a day.
Post by: PaulKing on October 30, 2007, 06:38:07 pm
Was up early polishing the vans for our photo shoot for the media today , had a great time, and a surprising good laugh, our Book keeper was the "homeowner" and was scared the photographer was going to see the peanut smuggling that was going on.( chilly but bright this morning)  Mrs/Dr King was the very well qualifyed Rug Doctor and had a flying carpet to ride ( six months pregnant as well!) ME? I just had to strike a pose! sadley I don't have a good side.

All I can say is, please, if you are in the north and you see any of it.

It was'nt my idea!!

But a very good point that I learned today,  is that basically the media and I'm guessing to a certain amount customers are not the slightest interested in what you use, and how you do it.

Just the basics thats all, turns out the cameraman was talking to his wife last night and she asked " have the got one of those vans with the big pipes that come out of it, my friend had one of those and there the best ones to get" that was the first question/remark he asked as wanted shots of the big pipes! ( and yes just the vac hoses/ no solution hoses as it made it look "messy"

I was dead keen to show the rug cleaning plant and drying room but they were only interested in the rug badger as it " looks like it the sort of thing that does the job well" can we get it on a rug ( the wrong way up!) and have you look like you holding it back ( I dread to see how this turns out)

Well will see how it all goes in the coming months the test I guess is will we have a busy January, will let you all know.

P.s those who know us Stephen is the Poster Boy,,,,,, we're Doomed! Doomed I tell you!

not for me to give anyone advise on marketing but someone did once say to me that  the last person to have anything to do with selling yourself, is YOURSELF, we don't see it like the customer does, we see it as a carpet cleaner not someone who wants their carpet cleaned, does that make sense?

YEP CBT  I agree 100% I think we all get a little bit lost in the technical side

This is me following my own advice, we are promoting ourselves and nothing but ourselves, have long being affilted, and member of such and such, approved to use scotchgard, regency protector, homeserve protector, I'm taking my ball in protector, Now that we only sell our own protector we call it carpet guard it can be anything as long as it's a good product!

Lots of really great organisations/ products / memberships  out there, we are members and users of most of them, but when it's my money paying for advertising. I want to advertise my business ONLY, no one else and god forbid anything the competion can also offer!

This is not the big rant more the fact we are wanting to become the chicken/ lots of little customers very happy with what we do and would'nt dream of going anywhere else.

If it works and I have a big car then I'll francise it. If it all goes tilt up the it me and my lucky van once again.

Not with you?

Shaun

sorry for the confusion Shaun. I had said earlier I was dreading seeeing how the photos from the rug plant turned out, and you said you were looking forward to seeing the photo. I ment, that you were enjoying my aprehension. Much like people slowing down to have a look at a crash on the motorway.

As it happen I don't think there be a photos of the set up as they just had me surrounded by rugs, blowers and " oh and one of those shiny sprayer thingys"

There are Some good ones on the rughub though.

Obviously you have done your home work on the rug plant, do you get asked alot for rug cleaning? I know I don't apart from "will you run over this for me while you are here" or have you got a contract with someone a bit like WE Franklin in Sheffield who do Johnson's dry cleaners rugs?

RUGS we don't do anything else but off site charge 4 times as much and have no problems, last rug we just gave a run over went yellow as it was white un treated wool and was left in a airless room for 2 weeks as they went on hols. It took the tech 4 hours to get it storted out.

Moral was no more "could you just" but lots of " that needs to be done in our rug plant to do the job properly" Strangly enough 3 months on, and no one has said no!

We do many just building it up at present, but it still pays all the bills on the unit. Which we had anyway. and we do them in any down time and if we don't get that we do a sat morning.

Looking for a main road site next, move the office and all to one location and do a cash and carry service

as for contracts, well that would be telling  ;)

Picked up a rug 2 mile from us cleaned it and returned it cost £102 would have offered to clean it in house for £25-30 previously. Customer was trilled we had vac'd the back as well as the front and gave me a £5 tip!

Got to say i was'nt my idea to do this but am very glad we did.

sounds like thats taking it a bit too far you end up with a damp smelly bedroom.  You could do with some poles in the garage at least, and a dehumdifyer, take a look at the rug hub forum lots of great info there.

Paul the rugs and more importantly the rug plant.
Had my rug plant for a couple of years now ;) take all my customers rugs to it and get good money.

The point I was making was the difference in price from doing them on site. :D :D
