Title: Yellow pages...Is it worth it?
Post by: SonOfFormby on October 26, 2007, 06:35:26 pm
How many advertise, free or otherwise in the Yellow Pages, and what sort of response do you put down to being in there.I have a free line going in in January, and naturally they are hassling me to buy a 3 line box, which will cost nearly £200 per year.

                                 Company Name
Domestic & Commercial, Reach & Wash Pure Water
Cleaning System-Covering the East Sussex Area
          Tel: 123456789                 Mob: 987654321

All enclosed in a thick black lined box.

When my van is finally sign written in a couple of weeks, I will be having ' Find Us In The Yellow Pages'  written on the side and back too.

why have find us in yellow pages? that sounds like madness to me, you are paying them for you advertising them, and when people (should I say if people do pick up a yellow pages) you have all the other window cleaners there aswell.

Why not have a website and say find us online www.yourname.co........... that why they only see you. the reason being is by the time they get back from where ever they are they more than likely will have forgotten your company name so they pick up a yp and see the person that spends the most on a yp advert and call them, so what you have done is advertise for another window cleaner. now that seems a very bad idea IMO

well i spent £1200 odd on it last year/this Yes you read correct, i got about half back, but then before i have spent £2-300 and got double out of it, the truth of it is you will not truly know until you do it, may work may not, if you get £20 from it then it will at least pay for itself in 12 months, i picked up a £10 from £2-300 add and that has turned into 4 figures of work with extra jobs, Web sites do work but you have to put them out there, so people know they are there to go to, one of my websites comes up on the first page of google, and it is no major production from  it, and everyone says it is a top site!!

can you afford it? do you need the work? are you prepared to lose it? will you take the hassle of idiots calling up?

I see your point windowwashers, but my thinking is, yes they'll be other window cleaners in the YP, but it's me they're looking for.

You can only use the Reach & Wash logo if you have a Ionics system.

It's a registered trade mark.

I'm considering yellow pages next year, but really do have a dillema!

including the vat, it will cost me £1056, for a 1/4 column in 2 books as i border on 2 areas.

I have built my whole business on leaflets, and have an excellent round. For the same money i can have 30,000 leaflets printed & put out, and with a response of 0.75% (the average that i get) and with my minimum charge, there is no way i could guarantee the same return with yellow pages!!!
Also, i choose the areas! With that return on the business i already have, it would mean getting an employee too!
I know ppl say they want commercial out of yellow pages, but as the same as everyone else, im in this for the money and with residential, better cash flow, more money, and i think more enjoyable!!!

Im not ruling out yellow pages, i think you've got to cover yourself from every way in advertising, but if my budget dictates that i can only spend £1056 for the year, i know which way i would go!!!

Also, my leaflets are double sided, windows 1 side, conservatories other.....it really is a no brainer   ;)

Well, ive built my whole business on leaflets, and will carry on this way.

I use yell.com for another business i have, which works, but i do cover a larger area for it, as for the w/cleaning, in my eyes and experience, its the only way for me  :)

ye i know wot you mean, its diffcult i have found if you employ a part time worker while expnding(tried 3) there not intrested dont put the effort in  ect ect

but you cant take some one on full time till you have the work load for two and well one person cant do the work of two so how do you get to that point??

As with any business you need to monitor where your enquiries come from.  Everyntime someone rings up for a quote, ask them how they heard of you.  Write it down, then you will know which methods work for you and which don't.

I use Yellow Pages, have done for years and it always brings in far more work than the advert costs, even though I live on the border between two directories.  But this isn't my only way of advertising, I also use the local parish magazines, about 10 of them :o

The mags vary enormously in price, so I'm very careful to monitor them so I know which ones are cost effective.  I also have an ongoing leaftlet drop, just a few each week (keeps the wife busy for a couple of hours ;D)

Marketing is like everthing else - don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Don't rely on a big flashy Yellow Pages ad to bring in the work you want - do a modest 2 or 3 column centimetre ad in a box and spent the rest of your budget on other ways.
