I have had more new jobs than usual over the past three weeks. Coincidence I think. It goes like that in spurts.

The winter has always been the best time of year for me picking up work. I'm only heading towards my 4th winter but i have picked up my best work and customers when the days are short. Alot less in the spring/summer.

Can't say we have seen a lot of new interest despite the fact that we are leafletting about 300 a week every week at the moment. Over the past year or so we have noticed that generally its getting tougher. This is due to a number of factors, one of which is definitly increased competition.
Our numbers have increased by quite a lot but we have had to trawl for them.

Getting one or two in an area is often OK I find though. It's getting the toehold that's important. It may take a year or two (or even longer in some areas) but eventually, people see you working/tell their friends etc and it starts multiplying (usually). Occasionally this does not happen. I find that it's important to quote each job as if it's the only job in that area. I used to reduce my prices if I got a lot of work close together but I won't do that now as I came a cropper a couple of times.

Things are going really badly for me. I'm not picking up many customers at all, if anything I am losing customers. I don't know how you lot seem to gain so many. I find it quite depressing coming on here as compared to me you all seem to be living like kings.

Why is it you are losing customers?
Maybe you need to get out there and canvass a different area and then as you pick up the customers you wont find it quite so depressing
And also what is said on here sometimes needs to be taken with a pinch of salt if you know what i mean
but good money can be earned if you put in the ground work first as no-one is going to give you the work unless you are lucky

I work in the West Midlands area, mainly in Quinton, Harborne, Bearwood, Blackheath etc. I often canvass door to door but for the most part while doing that I don't get any response. Maybe it is because I usually do it during the day but even when I did some evening canvassing things did not improve. The other way I canvass is by posting cards through peoples doors but it is rare for me to get a call back. If I do then they usually reject me when I give them a quote.
The only way I gain customers really is if someone approaches me while I am working on an exsisting job but even that doesn't happen very often. I also have to drop customers every so often because they don't pay me.

Sorry to hear your having a 'bit of a time'....
I have like yourself been through the 'dumps' and I have only just come through the point that I no longer have to use my savings to buy food.
With leaflets it is in my opinion a matter of putting out thousands...putting out a couple of hundred is just not worth the bother....Get 10,000 leaflets and aim to put out say 100 a day until they run out....get a internet print-out of each area you are targeting and highlight each street you do....then in say 2 days go back and doorknock the area...mark those who were in and their response...if yes cool...if no, move on, if not in...go back to re-knock thier door the following day.
Have another set of leaflets made...saying 'we cleaned your neigbours house' and each time you cleaned a house..put one of these into the neighbours door.
Releaflet 3 months later
Releaflet and doorknock 3 months after that....continue as required.
Advertise in the local church magazine..
Try a customer referal program...
Get a map of all the industrial area's in your region and target those....put together a promo pack for these types of customer.....
Clean on saturdays....
Above all...keep on plugging away....when it's raining....get your wetproofs on and get out of the house.
And when your 'down' come on here and shout for a shoulder to cry on...we all do it....from time to time.
I am sure that the succesfull guys that you refer to on here will all have put leather to pavement and pounded the streets...
Persistance is the name of the game....
The only difference between a winner and a loser if that the winner gets up just one more time.....
But in my humble opinion, having a plan of what your are trying to achieve is paramount....
I have one job tommorow (it'll take all day) but I know that in that area I have not leafleted for some time...so I'll put out a fistfull after work...and see what happens..what will you do?
Keep you chin up and keep us informed how your doing....
I wish you every success......keep going and keep smiling
-
in the areas i work, i get VERY little new work
only because i do them all anyways

Thanks for the help. I may try handing out leaflets as although I do canvass with them at the moment I probably don't buy enough of them for them to be truly effective.

From a non window cleaning womans perspective.....its cos Christmas is coming and cos last year, when they it too late to get a WC, they are starting to enquire now.
Might be right? might not be too!
