Lost a job yesterday on an upstairs flat because and i quote "you're washing the crap off the window onto the window sill." So my question is, how much do you clean? Windows only. Windows and frame. Windows, frame and sills. The above plus walls, dogs bed, dirty dishes and the laundry ;D ;D So what do you do and where do you draw the line?
-
windows /and sillls only if they ask at an extra price
-
I believe that you have to do the sills every time, frames no.
-
Whether trad or WFP the sills have always been cleaned, so far as I'm concerned that is the minimum that should be done.
Frames when trad were extra, though if they were already very clean, I'd often give a quick wipe around with a damp scrim just to keep them looking tidy.
Now I'm WFP the whole lot gets done, doors and frames included, and especially all the UPVC right up to and including the guttering on conservatories.
I've found it to be a huge selling point in truth, and it is still way quicker than doing them trad and only doing the glass and sills.

Ian, How do "you" do sills upstairs wfp? Do you do all the windows and then go back over the sills with the brush angle changed? Do you change brush? Any tips?
-
always give the sills a wipe ..... its our mess .... now i,m wfp tho i do the lot , keep getting asked if i,m putting me prices up ...... not putting my regulars up (till april), but newbes are a lot dearer , it is a good selling point

I generally have enough of an 'angle' on the brush that allows me to at least to use the side of the bristles on the brush to wipe upstairs sills.
It generally only needs a fairly cursory wipe to get them reasonably clean I find.
You can't see of course, but as I've not had a single complaint I can only assume I am doing them to the satisfaction of the customer.

i quote for the window which includes frames and sills. I know some avoid the frames but i consider it half a job to just clean the glass. And a clean frame and sill are eyecatching and can make all the difference between a good job and a brilliant job.

I did lose a couple when I first went to WFP due to the sills not being clean enough. However, judging by previous comments they had made, they were anti WFP anyway and would have found an excuse for cancelling anyway.

when I quote its for the window, not for glass. A window inludes frame ,glass and cill

i do sills as standard
-
i always wipe the sills with a dry towel to leave them nice and clean and dry and not wet through with water ;D
-
If you are wfp, get a cill brush. Good bit of kit. Go to Alex Gardeners site for more info.
on upstairs windows these brushes work a dream.
Saves complaints!

vikan sill brush on here aswell, i love it, just a shame its so heavy, the same brush design but with a lower weight would be a winner all around ;D

did a new clean today and the sills and frames were really filthy.
The lady paid me when I started and then went out. when she came back I was on the last couple of windows and she came running round to me looking really panicky. " how much extra will it be for doing the frames? I only wanted the windows doing."
When I told her the frames and sills were included in the price she was shocked. When cleaning a window trad or wfp I do the lot. IMO its a half job otherwise.

Had my first cancellation today with this strange excuse. "All that water's made my front door stick shut."
It was a custy I thought I was going to lose but the excuse was great considring I only do the tops WFP and her door has a canopy that makes the water fall clear of the door by 600mm.
As for frames and ledges, now I'm WFP (top only at the mo) all the frames and sills get done, top and bottom.
-
i always do the sill because they get really dirty. i do the frames on the first clean and they stay clean for ages only needing the occassional wipe.
-
Sill brush for me too on my 15ft Pole. To heavy on the 28ft so just angle the brush to wipe the sill. Also clean frames, doors (if UPVC, not wooden most leak) all part of the service. Custies love it!!

I use the vikan sill brush ( or high/low brush to give it its correct name) and its the mutts nuts. if your getting one though, make sure you get the monofilliment one,it has no rubber on the edges which can leave marks, and obviously has the big advantage of not having split ends on the bristles which can trap particles. Alot of suppliers are still showing pics of the old style one on their sites so I would definately ask before ordering.

on domestic done traditional we do cills FOC before we did cills lost a few customers to window cleaner that did all frames cills etc for same price we did just glass for .Have recentley purchased vikan cill brush excellent on glass but a bit to heavy tried it with 24 extel pole and it was all over the place if this brush could be made lighter it would be a real winner.

Thanks to all for your input. A little more learnt today ;) Cheers

In my opinion if you don't clean the cills you're only doing half a job. When using WFP you don't need any other gadgets, or even change the angle of the brush, it'll usually come up nice and clean using what part of the brush you can.
Glass, frames, cills, they all get done by us cause it just looks bad if they're not. And it's always the dirty bits that you notice, not the lovely, clean glass!!
-
when I quote its for the window, not for glass. A window inludes frame ,glass and cill
A window includes the frame but there's no mention of a 'sill'; according to the Oxford English Dictionary; so if you clean glass and frame only, you're doing your job!
I know, I know; I'm being anal!
Anyway, what standard do I clean at? I'm as 'fussy' as the customer! ;)

I do it much the same as Ian. I do wonder about this though. Having just removed the crap off the sill [ and quite a bit of it under trees] I am putting the dirty brush on to the next window. The state our brushes get into this time of year with all the muck and spiders webs, leaves me a bit worried about spotting.
I f you lower the brush to clean it after every window, it would be as quick to do some of them trad. Carrying a separate pole with a sill brush does not appeal to me either. I have been cleaning with an absolutely minging brush at times, yet get no complaints. Dai

I was thinking that maybe I'd do all the upstairs windows. Then go back over doing all the sills. Clean the brush and start downstairs. So not too much time wasted cleaning the brush. Downstairs sill I wipe off with a cloth anyway
