Title: IBC Tank in back of van?
Post by: Wrekin C S on October 09, 2007, 05:25:00 pm
After reading a few posts on here I have noticed some of you use IBC tanks in the back of your vans - and many of you that dont say they are dangerous - I am thinking of putting one in the back of my van - if bolted down securley enough how is it any different to a normal tank?

Thanks
Andy

IBC tanks should go in a frame that is bolted to the chassis, the van will have to have a big payload to be able to carry that size tank.

it isnt baffled, so the water swashes around much easier. They come with a cage bacause they arent made of such good plastic, so they need the cage to stop them bulging, Luke

You can baffle them yourself by using plastic blocks put inside the tank.

Um just a thought - how do they transport the ibc's in the first place when they are full of whatever fluid they carry? I suppose they are pretty stable when full.

Most of the time there brimmed to the top so it`s just like transporting brick or blocks, hardly any movement when full right up.

IBC's are only ever transported full, and are generally single use tanks for the chemicals industry. When full, they are relatively stable,... but half empty the water sloshes around and can cause quite a bit of instability, especially on corners.
Self baffling can stop this sloshing and make the vehicle safer to drive,... but as far as I know, if you were involved in a crash with a self baffled IBC in the back of your van,.. no matter how well secured and baffled,.. your insurance would not cover you, and you could end up being prosecuted.
I've always been told that its not legal to have a tank larger than 250 litres in a van without factory installed baffles, even if its 3/4 empty!

we used to have Ibc tanks in the back of our work vans used for jet washing. Every time we stopped at traffic lights we would get sea sick because the van rocked that much from the water moving.
