I always hold Paul up to new starters and other carpet cleaners as an example of what can be achieved if you do it right.

All good stuff, it would be nice to hear more success stories especially from multi truck operations. I guess we are more used to hard luck stories by the nature of the forum.

So come on don't be afraid to blow your or own trumpet.

Respectfully to Paul, I do about half his gross with only ME, but try grossing the other half that's when it gets bloomin hard and there's no sleep at night and you have to take on staff and more vans and more stress and more adverts and more chemicals and more machines to go wrong and just more worry.

Good luck to him.

Just got in and read in first hand in The Journal, hardly breaking news as it happened a year ago, but very well done, I'm sure a lot of work will come in from it. we'll probably have another 50 CC's starting out in the north east next week!!!!

It's all about having forsight to see what the punters are after, and I have to agree rugs are a growing market, get in there first with a major investment and good advertising.

Paul, did you have to pay for that editorial or was it free?

I have 2 cleaners in my area that clean rugs in plant and they are both quite cheap for the hard work that is involved, infact 1 is very cheap and does a good job.

I'd like to know what the market is like ie will you get Mrs.Smiths B&Q Poly prop also the big Kalims? Mrs.Smith paid £30 for hers how can you charge her £40 for cleaning it?

I've cleaned many rugs where the cost of the clean was more than replacement. Advised them and they weren't bothered.

Ian,

We just tick over in order to make ends meet! ;)

I have only met Paul once, through John Kelly at the NEC, lovely bloke and like John, very helpful.

I think "buzzing" is probably the right adjective for him!

Off site rug cleaning is a very bespoke service, I will have a chat with Paul in the near future about referring top end work to him.

When I first came on this forum, or maybe it was one of the others, a girl called Fox had an avatar which read:

"Turnover is Vanity, Profit is Sanity"

It's one of those profound adages that sticks with you.

I have purposely not put all my eggs in one basket, I just happen to be the one carrying all the baskets!!!

It's an attitude Mike, you can't teach anyone that it's just in you.

I was talking to Paul the other day about an issue some of you are aware off.

I knew he used to be Red Coat, and thought the picture that acompanies his postings and looks like someone out of the Monkies was him.

Turns out its not but a character off Blakes 7

All I can say is 100k takes a lot of years to get a return on unless you are on a high % profit margin.

Pete,

I know what your saying, I used to think that too, you either have it in you or you don't. Then I read about this thing called 'modelling' no nothing to do with Jordon.

You basically 'learn' the persons attitude. Actually the hard part is usually the person can't explain it at first because it's not a conscious thing. When they disect how they think, feel, behave then others can copy it.

Even better, the idividual being modelled can hone their own talents because they too then know what they do and therefore how to be even more successful.

Thanks for all the nice words; maybe not the dog on heat bit though Shaun! But I know where you’re coming from, I think.!

I'm sorry I have don’t have any secrets to impart,
but if it helps

Just try and be nice to everyone.

Never get technical without asking first, Mr & Mrs Jones just want to know will the dog poo clean off and the smell go away, Let face it till we are done and dusted I’m not 100% sure. Just be able to say “If I can’t do it no one can” and be telling the truth, if you’re not they can tell.

Never ever get a chip on your shoulder that your just a cleaner, sorry but you are! Ok your specialise in carpet and upholstery. But hopefully you are such a blooming good C&U cleaner, that people will want to use you again and again, even ask you to do other things. For instance a company asked me 4 years ago can you clean our “generic thermoplastic flooring” as the regular guy is being a pain in the bum. Now 10% of our business is just that and we always pick up the carpet and upholstery cleaning as well.

Never say NO, why would anyone ring you to hear you say no?
I’ll find out, the man you need is… here’s his number, can I just check that out and get back to you at 2,4,5 o’clock are all acceptable. NO is the same as *&%@ off

Wash your van a lot (that’s just common sense)

Never speed in a town, in a sign written van you might as well shout obscenities out the window,I don’t think anyone cares about speed on motorways. At least I hope not!

Always wear clean shoes (never trainers) women notice, and most of the customers are female; well I don’t like to brag but mine are!

If you’re going to be late ring ahead; better still get someone else to do it then it sounds much better.

Tell them your name, “Hi Mrs smith I’m Paul”, simple & usually gets you a brew made - do it right and you might get biscuits.

Always call men Sir, been handy on five occasions I didn’t know because they were a SIR (knighthoods) every time they said call me…

Never slag off the competition, if they are really good give in gracefully for example  “GUNNS, well I’ll never get you as a customer now, he’s just too d**n handsome,” raises a smile

Pet the dog/cat. I’m personally not a dog fan unless it’s a border collie; a dog ate my shoes last week when I was retufting the carpet. Teach me to take my shoes of at the door!

Take your shoes off at the door. statistics show that once every 23 year they get eaten!

That’s about it, been doing this since 13 years old, now 36. I’ve had 23 years experience and the man that trained me had 36 years on that. A Good guy David Storey - he gave me a trade, I bought his business.

And the most important thing to remember when the going gets tough,
“Better their money in your pocket than theirs”

Oh! most importantly don’t believe anything you read in the papers, didn’t you know 95 % of all statistics are made up on the spot!

Except we really do have three TM vans, it's  bloody nightmare!

Me too John, just 2 £45 jobs. So am gonna do same. Have this gear called Mer that me Father in Law plugs at markets and car shows. It's a polish, about £10 a bottle and it's very good. Makes the van very shiny which a couplle of custys have commented on before.

Hi Mike

I know a little bit about this subject and you are correct it can be done. Modelling is a very disciplined art and requires much energy (mainly mental). The best way to find this energy (and more importantly  maintaining it) is understanding what motivates you. This is something that most people will read and think "hey thats easy, I want to rich" or "hey I want to be as good as him/her but these are simply effects. Why do you want to be rich, why do you want to be better than him/her why do you want to be good at this job. Crack that and you will be able to maintain the discipline required. What I have said just touches the surface but I suspect you will understand this.

When you have above you then start with your S.W.O.T analysis. Strenghts, Weaknesses, opportunities, threats

You should you use SWOT on everything you do in business. It's the best formula you can use. You ask any Branson, Sugar, Gates and John Smith and I bet they are all doing well
