Title: Had a massage today!
Post by: Feen on October 03, 2007, 06:48:36 pm
Boy ,was this an eye opener. I went to see a massage therapist I have used in the past for back problems. I have started to feel tightness around my neck and shoulders. She found all sorts of problems :( Basically, due to the repeated actions of my work, the muscles in front of my left shoulder were tight and those at the back stretched and weak. The result was my left shoulder was pulled way forward. Other problems included 2 ribs being popped a little out of place and a tendon in the wrong place :o She got me all sorted and told me some exercises to help. But her main advice was warm up before starting work. I do use my arms too much, I know and not enough "body rocking". Any of you had/have similar problems?

I have a shoulder problem, it feels like somebody is injecting it with freezing cold water, but it works fine but hurts a little. Anyway I went to see an Osteopath, he sorted it out but it came back a year later then a massage and it didnt help, Luke

Shoulders at night and left forearm whilst working - probably because I hold the pole too high and don't use my legs enough. Origionaly had loads of neck ache but I seem to have got used to it now.

If you have read the wfp guide for beginners I wrote, I got a physiotherapist to give me details of exercises to do, in connection with our Jobs, these exercises can be done any where at any time.

I'm now well over 50, it's past my bedtime and I have tried a few things over the years..

But just like it was when I was younger, you probably won't believe me.

I have tried pills and potions, chiropractors, physiotherapists, osteopaths, x rays from orthopaedic surgeons, all of them a number of times..

My conclusion?

Most of them have a very expensive proffessional looking adjustable couch/bed/bench that you climb up on and then they bend it twist it stretch it and finally tip it so that the main thing really starts to happen....

You don't realise it but......money is now falling out of your wallet and pockets onto the floor!!!!

They pick it up off the floor and ask you if you are feeling any better?

And you say you feel lighter!  Because by now you'll say anything because you've been lying down for 20 minutes doing nothing except listening to hypnotising music and being massaged or bone clicked, so you are bound to feel better.......

for about 10 minutes!!!!!!!!

These click joints make more money than wfp windowcleaners!

In fact, and this is absolutely true...

a customer said to me the other day, as she paid me £10 for 25 mins work, that her back was bad and she had just got back from the specialist.......such a nice man!!!!  only charged her £30 for a whole 1/2 hour!!!

I asked her if she felt better?    She told me he had said it would take 2 or 3 sessions!

As she paid me my £10 she asked if I could leave it a little longer till next time as money was tight!

Who is kidding who?

I like the humour about the money rolling onto the floor   :)
Seriously though, the professions you mention are not a cure for all ills.  It does depend what the problem is in the first place.  I know that when I've had problems that won't clear up on their own, I've ALWAYS gained some benefit from acupuncture/acupressure.  Sometimes it's taken a few sessions and has not been cheap but the solution has lasted either permanently (until now at least) or has not re-occurred for some years.  It doesn't solve everything but is good for the sort of knocks and strains a manual worker is more likely to get.

I'm curious about accupuncture on this arm and shoulder.

I was off for 5 weeks with RSI, and it still hurts after a few hours work now.
That was 6 months ago, and I wonder if it'll always give me bother? :-\

Rog.
A few years ago I was in big trouble with pain around the neck/shoulder area mainly on the left side (I'm left handed).  I also had a constant aching in my left arm.  As you know, I was using traditional methods then.  I'm pretty sure it must have been caused by window cleaning.  I was in such distress over it, I went down to working the equivalent of two days a week for a while.  I had tried osteopathy and massage - neither of which helped me.
In desperation I looked up an acupuncturist in the phone book completely at random.  It turned out that he used acupressure so didn't use needles.  Because I had the problem for a few months, it took a while to come good.  Apparently the sooner you deal with something like this, the quicker it heals.  At first, I needed twice weekly sessions at about £20 a pop (and he was cheaper than most).  After a few weeks I started to feel better and we reduced to once a week then two weekly phasing out to nothing after about four months.  A word of warning though.  During the first three weeks the problem felt worse.  Apparently it's something that sometimes has to be gone through in order to come through the other side.  During those early weeks I nearly threw it in but I was kept going by the knowledge that nothing else had worked.  I am so glad I stuck with it.  Sure I've had some aches and pains since from areas of my body - including the one that he worked on. I've occasionally had to slow down for a few days because of my back tweaking.  But I've never since had a problem like the one mentioned above.  I put up with it for 6 months before I went for something that I thought was quackery.  I now understand that it is not quackery and has a legitimate place in healthcare.
Problems like that don't just hamper physical movement with me though.  I found that I was getting run down, got angry more easily, snapped at people more readily, and just generally felt down and a bit depressed.  Acupuncturists tend to take a more holistic approach whereas western medicine tends to focus more on just the area giving the problem.
I'm going to stick my neck out a bit here.  I know money is tight for you and that you've lost a fair bit of work lately.  I also suspect that you haven't made great efforts to replace it partly because of the pain.  I try not to give advice unless it's asked for but I'm going to make an exception now.
Beg steal or borrow (well maybe not steal) the money to go and visit and acupuncturist for three months.  If the problem is treatable, it will be one of the best investments you have made.  In fact, you may even decide to do occasional follow-up visits.  If the problem is treatable, the money you spend will be repaid many times over.  Your pain will gradually reduce to nothing, your movement will become a lot freer again,  But I found that something else can happen too.  I started to feel better WITHIN myself too.  My outlook started to feel more positive.
You never know.  You might feel so well that you throw your poles away and get the ladder out again  ;D

.....Other problems included 2 ribs being popped a little out of place and a tendon in the wrong place :o

I can't believe that.

How can ribs be "popped" out of place please?

A tendon can only be in one place...........where else is it going to go?

I know all about bad backs, car crash december done me in, I have had physio ever since and acupunture even looked like hellraiser at one point (is it me but it hurts like hell) the responce I got when i first clenched my fist was I have found the problem this is where the pain is coming from (so does it again just to watch me think hes a sadist, MRI scan will show what the problem is. I myself had nerve damage, leg leg didnt work right and disk bulge as luke says sack split (you would not move at all you would scream, I just eat painkiller all day, get needles stuck in me and physio I think just likes to make me take just a little more pain each time I go, they do work, I would recommend using a BUPA one expensive yes worth for it sure. Not looking forward to this winter but im sure I will live. I count myself as lucky was about 5miles an hour under being crippled and bed ridden for rest of my life.

Oh by the way not try to put the wollies up anyone, if you have a problem with your back etc get it sorted, one of my customers didnt and shes in a wheel chair now by just walking down the road and before there was nothing wrong with her.

I'm fine in the van because I'm sat upright.

If I'm in a car it's much worse, especially if it's got soft seats.

Right now, listen up you youngsters.

I'm 63 this year and still going strong - and I've had my share of mishaps over the years. (Broken arm/wrist/both heels/ankles)

Let me tell you the secret of overcoming the "aches and pains" - KEEP WORKING ;D

If I take time off (I had a weeks holiday in September) it takes me a couple of days to get back into it again.  I feel old and decrepit, creaking and groaning.

A few hours work and I start to loosen up, after a few days I feel almost 50 again ;D

And I can still do a full day's work on the ladder.

Only concession I make is to take a daily dose of glucosamine sulphate - I started to get the dreaded arthur in my hands, but the pills have sorted that out ;D

A few pints every night and a good cholesterol-filled take away every Friday and I'm fit for another 60 years ;D ;D

Cheers,

Ian

Neil said "How can ribs be "popped" out of place please?

A tendon can only be in one place...........where else is it going to go?"

Everything is connected. Muscle problems had pulled the ribs slightly out of place. We're talking small amounts here. Same thing with the tendon. It was pulled slightly towards my armpit because a muscle had contracted into a knot in my bicep (Luke, see my other reply ;)). Pressure and stretching from the therapist released the muscle knots and allowed things to return to where they should be and believe me you can feel the knots disappear.

most of these crooks will tell you things like "your disc is slipped" or you have "knotted muscles", the latter is impossible and a slipped disc would make you nearly paralised, I know my mum has one and she is very badly ill with serious spine problems. A slipped disc means that one of the sacks protecting your spine has burst and there is usually nerve damage. How can a massage heal a burst sack that has leaked into your spine, the majority are rip off merchants, Luke

Luke, with all due respect, what a load of (insert what you like here). Please let me answer things in the order you have raised them. Knotted muscles are not impossible. This is simply a stupid comment. I,m truly sorry about your Mum's predicament, but I never mentioned slipped discs. I know all about them. My late Mother had big problems there and I have two damaged ones. Not burst, damaged. To say " How can a massage heal a burst sack" is ridiculous. Who ever suggested that? On what grounds can you say "the majority are rip off merchants"?
