It's unlikely you will be able to do direct debits as companiew are supposed to meet certain criteria for doing this. Standing order must come from the customer's end. They will need your sort code and account number to set it up and they will have to do it with their own bank. Really, all you can do is give them your details and let them sort it out.
With bank to bank payments, my own preference is to give my details, give them a payment reference (their house number+postcode) and let them set it up with either internet or telephone banking.
The system is set up this way to prevent unscrupulous companies taking money via DD for somewone's account.

As Shiner siad it is down to the customer to do I have 2 accounts one for general use and one for recieving payments which I check daily on line (Veryeasy to do) Once a customer has paid I just transfer the money to my other account nice and safe .....It will take a few days for the money to get to you if the customer does it on line but it is better than walking around collecting ;D
