Paul i clean mine out weekly making sure any gunge around the bearing are cleaned, dry them out with a clean cloth and then coat in a light  oil spray.
Iwould imagine wd 40 would be ok. The key is keeping them clean and free regulary.

Both WD40 and mineral oil will have an adverse effect on the rubber seals.

I use zinc & castor oil ointment but silicone grease sprays are available that are designed for this purpose.

A good spray is available from most caravan dealers. It is Thetford seal lubricant and is for the seals in a loo.  Costs £2-£3. This is specifically for neoprene and rubber. WD40 will rot them sooner than later.

I’m with Lee G on this, very versatile used to use when I stored one of my bikes over the winter.
