ive just tryed to set up my ro unit, but havent got a clue.
i think that ive set it up right.

the water is only trickling out into my tank.
yet the waste is gushing. whats wrong?

do i leave my waste valve open? closed? part open?

waste is reading the same as the tap.

Hi jampot

Alex is working but have you tried contacting who you got the RO Unit from?

flush valve should be closed
flush valve open = slow produced pure
flush valve shut  = faster produced pure

Can't make your pic out it's too small, can you make it bigger so we can see?

This is the best advice you'll get on this.

Flush valve closed for production.

You have what looks like a 100-200gpd unit.

This will produce between 200-600 litres per 24 hour day, 8 - 25 litres per hour, depending on your input pressure etc.

Leave the valve closed for production.

The waste is meant to 'gush' out and the product will only be a dribble but it will add up.

Take a measuring jug and a stopwatch and see how much it produces in 1 minute, if it produces 130ml per minute then you are on the bottom end of the production range.

Is it from purefreedom? If so it is the same as mine and the pure production is very very slow compared to the waste.
I got a booster from Gardiners and that speeded up the production

how much more do you get when using the pump
Title: Re: ro unit help
Post by: mark dew on September 06, 2007, 05:10:52 pm
I have 300gpd RO.
Without a pump it would take 8 hours to fill up a 220 litre water butt.
With booster pump it takes 4 1/2 hours.

Or better still, send it back & buy 2 11ltr DI vessels for 100quid.
End of all problems & simple, pure water on demand & a full tank in 20 mins from tap.nice :)

But the other day jampot quoted his tap tds as being 82ppm. mine is 90ppm & i use less than 2 bags per year with a 400ltr van mount!
With the knowlage of how to make resin last + the above set up using DOWEX resin he'd be laughing all the way ;)

Unless you were to use 1000ltrs a day, every day, i wouldn't even consider an RO with your tap tds.
Trouble is, is that everyone thinks that they must have an RO (wrong) & that if they dont it will cost them hundreds per year in resin ( couldn't be more wrong ).
If you want to know anything else dude let me know. keep it simple. if you go the 2xDI route, virtualy nothing can go wrong & nothing to maintain (apart from the odd resin change)

Yes, + no storage tank, no booster pump, no transfere hose, no waste water etc, etc.
just goes to show how un-knowlagable some people are with the advise you've been given.

all approx- & + vat
2 x  11ltr DI vessels      100 quid (stream doing 13ltr ones for 50 quid at mo')
1 x  25kg bag of DOWEX resin   69 quid (wintecs doing free delivery over 30 quid)
3 x lengths of normal garden hose  (free if you already have a hose pipe)
a hose tap connector & a few female hozelok-type hose connectors (10 quid)

So about 180 quid ( 200 tops to be safe) + vat & delivery ( although, like i say, if all come from wintecs delivery is free, but i dont know how much their DI's are).

With your stat's i would estimate resin costs for a year to be about 100 quid, but you need further advise on how to make the resin last longer, which i will give you if you decide to go this route. it's simple & takes about 1 minute to do.

Another point jampot
If you take your DI vessels with you in your car/van, providing where you work has a similar tap tds & they're not on a water meter (with permission ofcourse :P) you can fill up your trolley/water butts from customers outside tap.
I do this regular on my round, i've tested all their water & know which ones have the softest ;D.

Yes, but not at full pressure, better to turn the pressure down a bit. no pump needed, straight from tap.

If i get chance tomorrow i'll take a pic of what you need & it set up on my outside tap. it goes like this-
tap - hose - 1st vessel - little piece of connecting hose (2-4") - 2nd vessel - hose to barrel / tank. yep, thats it.

P.S. the vessels come with male hozelok on the input & output so it's just a case of putting female ends on each piece of hose, just the same as connecting any garden watering equipment.

Have 13ltr ones for 55 quid + vat (including fittings which must be ordered at same time, they fit them for you) reduced from 80 quid.
