Title: Breakages an expense??
Post by: Feen on September 01, 2007, 06:45:40 pm
I had my first breakage last week. A concrete sill a couple of feet above the ground I was standing on cracked and broke. It had obviously been cracked before when I examined the crack, but I did break it. It told the householder who was in and said I'd get it sorted. My question is, can I claim this as a business expense? It is not worth claiming off my insurance (at least i don't think it is).

Yes you can but it might cost you a couple of hundred if you are going to get a builder to do it.

I've always offset breakages in the course of my work as a business expense.  If it's an insurance job, I would offset the excess as an expense.

You could repair it yourself - make up a simple plywood former to fit the remaining good part of the sill, fill it with fresh mixed concrete and leave it a few days to cure, then take the former off and you've got a new bit of sill!!

To make really sure you could drill the good bit and put in some re-enforcing steel bars and a bit of wire mesh first.

Cheers,

Ian

Ian, Even if I did as you suggest, surely I could claim my time etc as a legitimate expense. After all it would be cheaper than employing a professional.

Not really.  OK, so you could pay yourself from your window cleaning business but your builder self would need to pay tax on it if you get my meaning.  You can only offset the amount if you actually pay it out - not to yourself.

Your quite lucky really.... My employee jumped up on to an ornimental wall last week and knocked it over and fell about 3 foot... discolated his foot and is of work for about 4-6 weeks.. the cust has had a qoute and it is about £200 to fix... I will pay for the wall cos it is less then my insurance excess and my emplyee should have not of jumped up on the wall ( his fault) no claim for him... The £200 will go down as an expence but  I do fill sorry for my employee being out of work for some weeks...

Thought it was you ;D How you doing? Do you want any extra work in Coldstream? My mate is leaving, so I'm cutting a few out. I have a block of 4 I want to drop. Front is very easy, but the back is a mess of little gardens. £21/month. Got them wfp converted.
