to build a proffesional, fast loading webpage your best optoin is to use notepad. though, it is not easy and you do need to know html and other formats to do it well. it's the best way to do it, instead of using packages which bundle un neccasary code into your website and make it load slower, and often allow you to do so many things at first you clutter it and it soon becomes unproffesional. the difficulty with html and css etc, is that unless you're super pro - you keep it simple.

i can create a website for you, and also sort hosting and domains etc
i know window washers does it too.

no need for a " flash " website

people want to read your info, where you work / what services you offer, thats it

Flash sites need a plug-in, peoples first impressions count dont you think.
I would avoid flash like the plauge, looks very nice, but slow loading no content and not to great on search engines.

I do know quite a bit about what the customer looks for in a website etc, have been doing it nearly 10 years

correct, people only want to read stuff.
but as with everything image means a lot too.
pull up in a van with the exhaust dragging the floor, a rust trail and then get out with a ciggarette in your mouth swearing as you shut the door of the van ...and there's a high chance the customer wont want you to work for them ..cos your image is poor, even if you are a great cleaner and a cheap price.

if you have a cheap, nasty website then your image will be poor and people will move into a more proffesional looking website. i know, i do it - and so do most people.

what you say means 50%, the other 50% is how you look - same with any advertising, you wouldnt hand out a leaflet with tea stains and rips in it ... why have a website that people dont want to look at.

web design comes with a lot of though, colour, layout, text, fonts, sizes, positioning. if any of these things look wrong to a customer - they will sub consiously  judge you and your work.

im not saying pay a pro, but someone who knows what they are doing.

look at a 15 year old girls 'bebo' or 'piczo' and you'll see its not the sort of website you'd want, because for them its a website for a laugh and to meet new people and show pictures of yourself and friends...but if they were advertising it would be more than highly unproffesional.

the one off cost of setting up a proper website could benefit you greatly in the long run.
free hosting - yes, free !! good news, but poor on the search engines and can sometimes be unproffesional - banners/pop ups etc.

Best sites are simple.

Take youtube, simple, huge $25million a day to host.

Your website should be for the eyes of your customers, with only them in mind, at the end of the day this is window cleaning.

Tip: you provide a service, so make sure you gather contacts of  each visitor you have, this should be the second most important part of your site.

We do not see many here doing that.

Back to the question, How do I Build a Website.

If you do not have the skill do not do it your self, because you will make mistakes, so pay someone who knows what they are doing, if they say they have experience then ask to see a portfolio of there sites, if you do not like then look more.

If you've a basic knowledge of Flash and Dreamweaver, a simple way is to buy a template (Approx $60) from a site like www.templatemonster.com
You get a site quick, cheap, and that looks like it was professionally designed. Take a look at mine (Its nearly finished now!) www.avondhucleaning.com

the problem with flash is the loading time, i have a flash logo on a website i did before - loads super fast, quicker than an image could have. but as a whole website its slow and in my opinion ...naff, html sites may take time to load on occasions - but when you ge tthem they are basic and nice. whereas flash fte has unnecasary movement and effects that can be annoying. not to mention that they are worse on the search engines - sometimes even to the point of not being found at all.
flash is a no go area for websites in my (and lots of peoples) opinion.
take you tube (as an earleir example) the site is not flash - yet the videos are. thats cos as one object they can load much faster, but the website is still proffesional looking and easy to navigate using html (or whatever language that has used - php or one of the many others)

also, dreamweaver and other applications add in a lot of code you dont need making your website slower to load.

agreed, i could have used notepad to create a template for him and add all the info in the time this thread has been open. and using notepad would have meant it only has what it needs so is fast to load. and simple sites are effective, yet too simple and its no good. there is a fine line between the two.

I usually build 2 websites, a flash one and a html one. They look pretty much identical when finished. I just use a portal page and give the user the choice of which site the want to enter. Most broadband users choose the flash site, dial-up users opt for the HTML site.
As far as flash goes, there are a few ways to reduce the file size,... and if you build the site right, the flash header will only have to load once,.. as each page will point to the same file.
