Title: Breaking in scrims...
Post by: simon knight on August 27, 2007, 01:38:04 pm

Bought some new scrims a few weeks back. Have boiled them/used them at least 1/2 dozen times...they're still not broken in...or anything like!

Any ideas?

Should be fine by now. ???

I know...never had this before.

They absorb water very grudgingly...and they feel waxy to hold.

Same supplier...same scrim....perhaps a bad batch? ???

Have you tried microfibre?
Perhaps you don't like them, but if you haven't I'd recommend giving them a go.

It's all I use now.

Yeah I've tried them and it must be said that for buffing-up they're good...but I like the feel of a big cloth in my hand when it comes to detailing.

And you must admit a well-broken in scrim is far more absorbent.

I'm gonna boot me new scrims round the garden for a bit then give them yet another boil...if they're still crap I'm gonna bin em and change my supplier.

What i used to do with new scrim is use them as a rag to mop up the water off of the sills etc do this for a week and they are usually fine after that
Man im glad i dont have to do that anymore ;D

if i have problems breaking them in i put them in the washing machine on a hot wash with an old pair of trainers, does the trick very well

Has anyone on here had problems with new scrims going into holes BEFORE :o they are worn in?

The last lot i brought are all doing it but my supplier swears they are the same scrim as always. He did tell me that they are making them with a lot looser weave than they used to.

heres my tip, soak them in daz for 24 hours, lots of daz this way gets all the brown horrible dye out, then wring them out wash them at 70o with daz again, and then when you use them flick them and you would if you was whipping someone with it, after a few days of this every time you wring out the scrim, you stretch the fibres and break them in.

also they might have a double folded edge, unpick this and re hem it, makes the world of difference

Cheers Alex I'll give that a go.

Dave, even wfp must have to resort to scrim now and again.

You are using scrims that are stitched (hemmed) all around aren't you?  I believe unstitched scrims can be less durable than stitched.

Sounds like you've bought some 'proper' scrim. My old trick is laying the scrim out on gravel, drive or path etc. Put some over it and do that shuffle that gardeners do to the soil before laying turf. Works a treat I promise - just make sure no one sees you doing it or you'll be carted off to the nearest wacky warehouse ;D

Hi Dave,

If you're still snowed-under I'm in no real rush, but I probably need them by month-end.

Hope all's well.
