Title: Van setup question
Post by: Pole2pole on August 01, 2007, 08:04:34 pm
Hi gang. Can one of you van man men help me out with a couple of questions. I'm pickin up a new van tomorrow. Problem i have is, i'll be installing a 400 litre container in the next few days. This will be holding pure water pumped straight into it from my 1000l IBC in my garden.
The question i got is..........am i right in thinking, all i'll need is a sureflo pump(12v) and a 12v battery with some kind of on/off switch. All i really need it to do is pump (when reqired) straight into my backpack, and maybe occasionally, direct to one of my poles(so a varistream is probably the way forward?????) Can someone confirm my neurotic fears perlease  ;)

You will need something faster than the Shurflo pump to transfer water into your backpack.  If you rigged up a syphon arrangement it will probably be just as fast if not faster than your Shurflo but even better a 12V submersible pump will fill you backpack in under a minute.

Sounds complicated alex  :o What would that consist of? I'm very interested in ANYTHING that saves time. Thanks again, Dino

To set up a syphon system, insert a 13 mm T piece in your tank outlet line with a separate shut off valve on it and a length of 1/2 inch hose.  If you want to fill your backpack up, put your backpack on the ground, the end of the hose in the top of your backpack and open the valve.  You will be surprised how quickly it fills.  Even quicker is to use a 12v submersible pump which drops in the top of your main tank with a 3/4 inch outlet hose that will pump either 50 or 75 litres a minute.

Gazza

The sureflow backpack has a strainer built into it, they are there to protect any dabris getting into the pump which could cause damage to it.

I use a submersible  bilge pump to transfer water from my van tank into my backpack, it takes about 20 seconds :)

Dino,

You are going to be doing the exact same as I already do day in day out.

I store my pure water in a ibc tank in the garden then pump to the van.

In my tank in the van I have a 12v submersible pump with 2m of 1inch diameter hose stuck to it.

I just clip on to a lesuire battery and that satrts the pump. Fills my backpack in about 15-20 seconds.

£55 ex vat. You will need hose as well.

i'd get the 75 litre pump if i was you. I dunno if its just mine, but my 12v 75lpm pump does not fill a 25 litre barrel in 20 seconds. It takes a minute or more.

Well I would take your pump back for a refund if its taking that long to fill a 25L barrel! :o
