I saw another window cleaner smoking while cleaning a customers house the other day, apart from this being totaly unprofessional and rude is it legal with the new laws?
-
I never smoke on a customers property. I smoke somewhere I can't be seen.
-
cleaning outside is an open space, cleaning a custies house is'nt a public space, so as for being illegal? imo NO
-
I did if I knew they weren't in, or if they smoked themselves.
-
Had builders working on my property outside, smoking, not harming anyone so why should anyone be bothered,
its a strange country we live in just now,
cant smoke,
cant say boo to kids
cant whistle at a girl, but they can nip a mans ass ???
we even have a prime minister that we didnt elect.
and you think the russian people have it bad..
we are heading for a dictatorship guys. ;D ::) ???
-
Hells teeth, how petty is this world coming to?
I do hope he didnt f**t or pick his nose while at work!
-
exactly....
pathetic.
-
thought law was you cant smoke at place of employment as each customer is a place of employment are you breaking the law ?
-
You can smoke while cleaning a customers windows outside but you can't smoke in the van OR any other vehicle that is used for work EVEN when you are not using for work and EVEN when you are on your own.
So now you know there is no excuse. Mind you it will be like mobile phones........
-
you can smoke in your own works van... if you are alone
-
if you own it and drive it and no other employee or customer uses it either as a passenger or a driver, and they will never use it, then you can smoke.
However trying to explain that to some copper might not be worth the bother so don't blow the smoke in their faces. The fine is £1500 if you take a chance and lose.
-
I don't smoke on customer's premises but i do in my van.
But only for another week im booked in to a NHS stop smoking course starting next thursday
Paul
-
only me in my van all the time, so i think ok ... ;D
-
shall will clear this one up?????
i am the only smoker at my fire station so i looked into this alot so i could shut the other up when they had a go at me.
you can smoke at your place of work but only in a designated area designed for smoking, if it has 3 walls and a opening you still cant smoke there. it must be totally in the open, and atleast 2mtrs away from the door or opening, so i just off down to the bottom of the drill yard and puff away to my hearts content,
i smoke at customers houses because i am out in the open, my motto is if they dont like it they can go get another window cleaner, i wont have customers dictating my life, bad enough the goverment do, bunch of
as for vans, if you own it and no one else drives it , you can do what you want in it, ie smoke, but not use your mobile phone,
i have been to the NHS quit smoking clinic and it didnt work,
one day i will give up, most probably when i go in a wooden box ....lol
hope this sorts this one out
regards
Haydn

On Radio WM the other week a council guy came on and said that you cannot smoke in a vechicle you own, if you use that vechicle for work and you claim tax for it.
As for smoking at someones home, dosen't the f*g get all wet and soggy. ;D
To find out for sure, contact your local council and ask them.
You can locate them in the phone book, just under the Gestapo Listing.

Where a vehicle is used for work by more than one person, regardless of whether they are in the vehicle at the same time, it will be required to be smokefree at all times. This protects all who use the vehicle from harmful secondhand smoke, regardless of when they use the vehicle.
Smoking will be permitted in vehicles that are for the sole use of the driver and are not used as a workplace by anyone else, either as a driver or passenger.

You're wrong about smoking in your van. If you're a sole trader you can smoke in your van! You can't smoke in your van if you employ someone and they share the van with you ;D
-
No you can't.
It's a place of work, there's no exceptions.
People in Scotland were getting done for it months ago.

Smokefree vehicles
The new law also requires vehicles to be smokefree at all times if they are used:
to transport members of the public or
in the course of paid or voluntary work by more than one person - regardless of whether they are in the vehicle at the same time.
Vehicles that are used primarily for private purposes are not be required to be smokefree.
-
i dont smoke when i work i dont think it is right and makes me cough
-
How can it possibly offend anyone if a window cleaner wants to smoke outside whilst working? I think that far too much is made of this whole PROFFESIONAL thing! Many customers actually like the idea of their window cleaner being a bit of character in a cloth cap who gives them a bit of banter as he works, most don't care if he smokes, chews gum, listens to music, whistles, sings, wears jeans and a T shirt ect ect!!!! ;) as long as their windows are clean!! ;)
-
Hear Hear. !
its verging on the borders of ridiculous now....
its not as though we all work inside all the time, then we may have a problem ::)
-
If you smoke, do you ask permission to smoke on thier premises?
-
fresh air is legal, countrywide.
-
Do you ask permission to breathe on your customer's property? ;D
-
I used to smoke, i dont anymore. I dont really care if people want to smoke in public places or not. But whenever i used to go out anywhere i always asked if it was ok to smoke around non smokers, if not i always got up and went outside for a puff. I always respected non smokers wishes, and the reason i ask is do you ask if its ok to smoke at someones property, its thier property, you are providing them with a service, and if they dont like smoke, then why force it upon them at thier home? Its not being fair in my view. Why not just wait like i did and have one in the van? :)
-
As I see it, If you drive for a living your van is a place of work. In our case, the van is only transporting us to a place of work. So smoke.
If you employ someone, and are paying him by the hour, he is being paid to travel and the van becomes a place of work for him, so no smoking.
If you are business partners, then again the van is only transporting both of you to a place of work, so smoke.
So you get to the job, do insides and out, and the customer makes you a brew, sits you down in the kitchen, and offers you a ciggy????
The worlds gone mad mates.
I was told yesterday of a dogging site in Ellesmere forest, it has become so busy, that an enterprising guy has set up a hot dog stand. I'm not joking. I just hope that ladies of the night don't feel the need for a post coital ciggy in the back of the car.
Dai.

I would be more concerned about what the hot dogs are used for.

why are we forcing smoke on people , even on the property we are working on?
1/ we are outside in free fresh air (legal)
2/ i dont see many of my customers outside anyway.
3/ they own the property and the ground, not the bloody fresh air.
and
4/ why are we having a discussion about smoking in the open air.?
OH yes i forgot , we are living in a communist state now arnt we ?
so sorry. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
-
Yeah, but in this weather when you have open windows it drifts in.
My neighbour smokes outside her house, and my front room whiffs for ages after. >:(
-
good job you dont live next door to a pub then ;D
getting beyond a joke this now.... smoke drifting in through windows.... :o
car fumes must be shocking then, :-\
but thats ok as we need cars eh. ??? ;)
-
this sums it up as far as im concerned, might make some of you look silly, but you can smoke in your van if only you drive it, and i couldnt see anything saying you cant smoke at a custie`s house.

emmm, - Ellesmere Forrest ?
far more interesting than reading all this anti-smoking rubbish :)

It dosn't matter if its legal or not to smoke at a customers house while working, its more down to how proffessional looking you want to be.
Are you showing a proffessional image by turning up in a sign written van, wear a uniform, have a pleasent manner, you don't F and blind all over the place.
Yet you consider its ok to smoke while you are cleaning.

i dont have a sign written van, dont need to. i dont wear a unifrom, i dont f&c to customers, and im always polite to customers, not one has said put that fAg out or get off my property with that in your gob,
for f**k sake, everyone to there own, im my own boss i do what i want to do and dont need people preaching to me, get a life.......
-
Well said djhaydn!!! We are window cleaners at the end of the day, as long as we turn up on time and do a good job, then that is proffessional enough for most domestic customers. Do you think we should all be boring uniform wearing clones Williamx? Many people like us to be individual characters, they quite like it if we are a bit rough around the edges, and even the most stuck up customers like a bit of banter now and then!!! ;)
-
They banned smoking inside buildings, but what I think should be banned, is bus's that are waiting in the town center, to turn there engines off.
I went into the bank today and the boss went into the shop next door, I waited out side this shop for her and nearly died with the fumes from 4 buses all sat there for over 10 minutes with there engines running, no wonder bus fares have gone up again.

Do you go to your local chippy or chinese/indian and they smoke.
Is this ok, or not . It's their workplace?
Do you not object if they serve you with a fAg in their mouth?
If so why are you different than your customers who you smoke in front of?
Have you been to to hosiptal and the nurse is smoking? No. Why not, its their workplace.
Would you object if the funeral home and staff, turned up smoking, before they have turned your next of kin into ash.
There are many circustances where smoking is not accepable, why do you think its acceptable for your customers
-
We are not serving food or looking after sick people or even burying dead people, we are cleaning bloody windows outside in the open air, nobody cares if we smoke or not, get a life mate!!!!!!!!! ;)

[font=Verdana]William x you are begining to get on my tits with this subject.
I smoke in my van, i smoke at customers houses, and i`d frigging smoke in your face if i stood next to you, you could whinge as much as you like but i wouldn`t put my fAg out,

im not false, i am what i am and i aint going to change at 42yrs old
window cleaners are not in the catering trade, and no i wouldnt give a poop if i saw anyone anywhere smoking, its a free world, but we live in a country made up of stupid rules, and pratts who want to judge people, no names mentioned william

With your attitude, its no wonder that the window cleaning trade has a bad image.
It use to be that a window cleaner was classed as a dole cheat - villian and bully, with your wonderfull use of the english language, its seems that there are some of them still about.
When I was brought up its was considered good manners to say please and thankyou - not to swear or pick your nose - always open doors for ladies, help the elderly to cross the road or carry their shopping for them and if you are a tradesman not to smoke while you are working at your customers houses.
Its not that important if you have a shinny new van or if you wear a uniform, buts it is very important that you show your customers RESPECT and have GOOD MANNERS.
As for you smoking in front of me, I have no problem with this and would not object, but If I was paying you do do some work for me then, I would insist that you didn't smoke.
And yes we do live in a world with too many rules and regulations, but this is down to the idiots and prats who don't have any sense in their heads, so if left to the goverment to try to kept them safe and healthy.

there you go william, judging me.
you think i give the window cleaning business a bad name purely because i smoke at cussties houses and my attitude (to you),
think again, 1. ive never been on the dole, so i couldnt cheat the system if i wanted to,
2. all my customers...All.... know im a retained firefighter in my village.they respect me for the job i do 24/7 365 days a year, im not just your every day window cleaner, so when ive been out all night saving a life /animal or even someones house, i still get up and go clean there windows,so i dont think any one of my cussties would begrudge me smoking whilst doing there windows. ok you and some others on here have there opinions to smoking and where you can smoke, and i have mine, we are all open to opinons,
smoking opinions with me really get me wound up, normally from ex smokers, they are the worst.
im sorry if i went off the rails, but you wound the wrong guy up.

When I was a young whipper snapper I was always smoking at work, I used to zip up and down the ladder till I started smouldering, you couldn't see me for the smoke. ;D
Now I'm nearing my dotage, if I use a ladder I'm a bit more sedate, I just work up a gentle glow :P
Cheers,
Ian
