hi all i have just bought a vaxhaull combo 1.7 merit desiel van but it only has a four speed gearbox now going down the motorway today it seemed to be making a lot of noise at 75ish (as if i was thrashing it)
did they make a fourspeed version or have i had my leg lifted?
-
Hi Lee
You didnt say what age it is, can't see late models havin 4 spd
-
its it only an m reg but very tidy and low miles
-
I used to run Astra 1.7d estate K reg and that had 5 spd so I am sure yours would have had 5 originally.
Ring local Vauxhall dealer tomorrow.
P.S. Machines earning it's keep now

oeeer im getting a bit worried now there dosnt seem to be anywhere where the fith gear should go gearbox it slack but ok ill do as you say and ring dealer tommorow
ps im pleased to hear that things are working out for you steve i really do hope it goes from strength to strength for you mate!!

The original gearbox could have been replaced with an older four speed box or maybe 5th gear is faulty. What does it show on the gear lever?, but that might not be original either.
-
it is a five speed gear numpty but there dosnt seem to be any space for 5th gear if you get my meaning
-
Why were you doing 75mph ???
The speed limit is 70 mph !!
-
gear selecter may be faulty..had that happen to me once...1st and 2nd gear vanished.
-
Yes, either that or the gearbox has been changed.
-
so if it is a 4 speed gearbox but should be 5 should i get it changed or will it be ok with 4 gears

Hi Young John,
It is worth mentioning that the National Speed Limit for non-car-derived vans is 50mph on single carriageway roads and 60mph on duel carriageways (except motorways).
I am sure that many van drivers are unaware of this.

Hi Mi Old Mate
Only hope that readers take heed of your wisdom.

hi all well i have sorted the problem (after i lost ALL of the gears :-X :-X)
the gear linkage on the gearbox was missing a plastic bush which holds it all tight so it had lots of slack i
n fact when i lost all the gears it had fallen off the linkage from the gearbox on the engine
a trip to scrap yard and 45 mins later i now have a fully functioning 5 spd van
MANY THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR REPLYS ON THIS TOPIC
