Hi again,
Just had 20k two colour leaflets done I was wondering what response, I could expect in Central and West London on average? Your response rate if you are willing would be appreciated which ever part of the UK you are based
-
I have heard 100-1 some people say 1000-1 try mailing one of the senior members they should know good luck mate
-
5-10 jobs

Hi
lots of things that affect response. you should have tested about 3k before spending your money on large runs. this lets you test the offer, copy, and headlines. its when you know what works you should risk your money on large runs.
this testing will then give you your numbers on what to expect on this type of drop.

don't look at the % return look at the £ return, if you get 1% return and at £50 a job you are running around like a fool comapred to 0.5% at £125.

I believe you will get less return on Leaflets in London as I have read that everyday peoples letter boxes are full of leaflets.
However you deliver yours the response rate will be dimished.
The move by enviromental health officers to loby the government to restrict or alow an opt service for leaflets is growing.
The problem is apart from political leaflets very few MPs or Councillors use leaflets to develop a customer base.

Also..........look at the jobs you get from the leflets, as an opportunity for further work, but ask for it, in other words............
When you finish a job and your client is greatly impressed, that is the time to ask for a couple of referrals, just ask for 2 people, she thinks , might be interested in having their suite / carpets / rugs cleaned........
It's very common, to have people tell others that they are getting their carpets, or whatever, cleaned and for their friends / relatives, to say. " I'll see how good a result you get and then get mine done"
So............provided you have an excellent result, strike while the iron is hot !!!!!!!!!
This is how to get the maximum return from a leaflet drop and if you are good, you will grow steadily over time.

I put 300 leaflets out every day before jobs.. i have never got less than 3 jobs per 1000..i put offers on mine though. Last week i got 7 calls from 1500 and 6 jobs from the calls.

what area are you in out of interest Ollie?

llanelli, south wales. I leaflet most surrounding towns too
-
I dont believe any body get 7 to 10 jobs a 1,000
unless your working for next to nothing , :) can i have some of what you have been drinking ;D

whatever, carry on as you are ,i will do what i do.

Geoff who said they get 7-10 jobs a 1000?
I had 4000 put out last week and only got 2 jobs from these leaflets ( it was a different colour so I know they came from one of these specific 4000) but I also got 7 jobs from leaflets put out in previous weeks.
like Shaun said, its the job value not the amount of jobs thats important.

Ian,
Do you think a figure like 3k would be an adequate test sample? I would do 20k and wait at least 3 months before analysing the results. To date our leaflet ROI 6.03, delivered with a free offer. The referrals they generate are where the money is though.
In answer to the original question: I don't think its about the jobs, its about the money, so track it and don't fiddle with the leaflet on short term and low numbers. We did it a lot in the beginning and looking back (armed with the figures) it was a waste of time.
Just my 2 cents.
If you look at around £30/k delivery = 600 on a 20k drop
and around 200 for printing
800 in total should return 3.2 to 6.4k (ROI=4-8)
Not fantastic numbers, but certainly an achievable and realistic target. Needless to say, to make money from leaflets you need to drop a lot. We could debate demographics, frequency and design all day. Basically from my limited data, hit moderate earners as often as you can with an "un-missible" offer.
I guess others will think differently though.

What I am talking about is untested copy, offer etc. I have always been told that 3k is a good test number. if it does not work then changes need to be made.
With regards you time period, you might be leaving money on the table. the reason the three letter sequence works well is that when people put a letter or leaflet aside some will for get and need reminding. that why follow up reminders on your offer works.
You realize that its not always the right time for a prospect when you drop your leaflets doing a second and third drop with a stamp "second notice" and the offer end date will give you results.
I have done this on the first time and it works well, as some prospects think they missed the first drop. it all about setting up a sense of urgency. and moving carpet cleaning up the prospects things to do lists.
anything that keeps your marketing spend down and gives you results must be good. so working on fact and not guess work is cost effective.

Exellent post Graeme, i relate to your figures, I agree a realistic return is 4.1 over that and you should be pleased, but if i get 4.1 I'm happy.
