Supa lite works well for me, although I've battered my first one already.
Guess that's first clean scrubbing for you... :-\

But hey, why have something inferior when you can have a Bentley? ;D
I can afford one. 8)

Hi folks,

To Make a "Tesco"Light  Brush

1.  Go to your local Tesco and buy a "Melody" value broom.  They are £3.97 in our Grimsby or Cleethorpes stores.

2.  Go to your local aquarium pet shop and buy:
      1 mtr of 4mm air tube   -   about 20p
2 x straight joiners.  Little black ones with a flange in the middle.
      1 x T connector
The whole lot will cost you no more than £1

3.  Now take the lot home and:

Take a pair of pliers and pull out a few bristle clumps where you want the jets
     to go.

Get a 5mm drill and drill 2 holes for the jets

Take the 2 straight connectors and clip one end of just behind the flange.

Cut your tube into 3 lengths

Push a "jet" (cut striaght cons) on the end of 2 lengths.

Then, from the bristle side, push the tubes and jets into the brush (should be
     a tight fit).

Join up the 2 tubes and connect the 3rd with the T con.

There you go, one cheap a nd cheerful light brush.

They will screw onto the standard brush srcews (do with my Unger adapters).
They do wear out after about 3 - 4 months - But so what! for £5 - £6 per brush you may as well make a dozen of them for spares!!

Hope this helps

David

Why do you push in from the bristle side Dave? would you not end up with the jets proud of the brush base?

Davew ,
I do the same as it gives a tighter fit, if you do it the other way it's way too loose by the time you get the jet/pipe through.

Inspired stuff David, and I'm not knocking it, but the Gardiners ones are only about 10 or 12 quid anyway.
Is it worth all that to save a fiver?
I'd rather save myself that job and pay double to be honest.

Close squeeks but they are £13.50 + vat + del making a total of £21.74 :o

I'm using the Bentley from Gardiners too, Blowed if I know how Squeaks has battered his so quickly, mine has been in use day after day constantly since Valentines day, it is starting to wear of course, but there is at another 3 months work left in it, maybe more.
If I am going to replace a brush or anything else for that matter, then I'll also buy other things too, thereby reducing the effect of the delivery charge.
I might go down the DIY route, but only for the minor curiosity of knocking one up for myself.
You will still have to buy the jets though, I don't think Dave mentioned those did he?
So you will have to send off for those ;D Unless they sell them at aquarium shops??

Personally I think it is a small price to pay anyway, I'd sooner order a brush and use it straight from the box!

B&Q do the plastic jets - cheap as chips. Anyone with a Gaz (r.i.p.) brush will have these. Metal jets are nice but I'm not sure of the reasons to use them. Alex will know. ;)

The Hozelock plastic jets help you decide what flow jet size you need, they are very simple to drill out. Then once you know the drill bit size you like you can use a "goof"( forget who suggested them but thanks ! ) plug to semi-permanately fit into the hose.

Of course you won't, they will already be in the brush you have worn out.....
unless you've worn the jets out as well :o

My gardiners jets have featured in several of my brushes....

If you do make one yourself, the other tesco brushes are only 1.49.
I like to turn them into a duo-trim by cutting the inner bristles short. That makes them better at scrubbing and the long bits get into all the frames and recesses.

Two holes, stick jets in, five minutes 1.49. Bargain. keep several spare. Have that 'new brush' feel every week! Thats what I do for the fishing pole.

I might try to stick my tucker brush on one of these days, as it knocks every other brush into a whatsit.

Hi Guys,

The jets are only pushed in (not glued) so they are easy to push out and re-fit onto another brush if you want to. They are metal because they last longer, we originally used plastic ones as did several other suppliers but we found that a careless knock could on the odd occasion shear the jet off at the back of the brush. The metal jets are still very light and much tougher.

Hi John Tomkins,
I checked on our website and you are right the website charges £5 delivery on the brush, unfortunately this has been a victim of a rather complicated shipping-charging module on the website which has it's limitations. I have now changed this so that postage for a Bentley brush is only £2.00 and 2 Bentley brushes are £3.00. Sounds a bit more reasonable to me.

Squeeks,

I'm a lazy sod too and am tempted to try one of Gardeners ready made ones.  But, as others have said, check your maths ??? Gardeners would turn out to be around £20 thats 3 - 4 times the cost of making them :o
