How do u guys follow up your references for staff?I have always dialled the company direct before now simply because the employee only gave telephone details,no adress.Is it polite manners to write rather than phone?I want to get particular references back asap.

I always phone them, never been a prob ;D

Apart from using references either by phone or preferably written at the interview stage i ask the prospective employee to authorise me to contact their previous/current employer with a factual data request. I never had anyone refuse and you can then ask previous/current employers the questions your not supposed to ask for example exactly how many days off and specifc reasons why etc.
Not sure i have explained myself properly there but it does support references
