Title: would this be ok to maximise a days work
Post by: LWC on June 14, 2007, 01:30:08 pm
me and my uncle got together today, and were thinking about ways to carry more water, the safest possible way...whilst maximising full potential of the van

they say my van has a 800kg payload, but we thought that its just an estimate and figured that the payload is only for inside the van...i carry a 400 litre inside, so thats half the payload...anything outside van doesnt count

i will be able to carry 1400 litres of water without any problems. as you can see we have secured with 2 ratchet straps which is more than ample to hold it to the van. we did try it with one ratchet strap, but after going over a speed bump figured...we realised that it would have to be 2 of them

if you are interested in our setup, please feel free to contact us anytime.

The weight of that full of water sploshing about would be a lethal it would rip the roof bars off,are you brainless?

This Cannot be a serious posting can it !!!!!!!
i am no engineer by any stretch of the mind but even an idiot would know that the S.W.L of roof bars etc was not intended for anything that heavy and high and non stable ???

please tell me that someone is having us on, and has not been putting peoples lives in danger?
then we wonder why window cleaners get a bad rep! :'(

 :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
Can't believe your thinking of doing that.
There's no baffles in the tank and as posted above the water would be sploshing about it wouldn't take much to rip the roof bars off or tip you over.
I wouldn't be surprised if you got stopped by the Police aswell.
I'm sure also the maximum weight you can carry on the roof would be over it's limit when full of water.
I wouldn't want to be anywhere near you when you were driving that.

Re-reading your post i can see it now, but i wouldn't be surprised if some muppet would actually think of doing something like that.

I've seen a trailer tip over because the guy had 3 full IBC tanks, one strapped on the top.
He went round a round-about quite slow, but it still tipped.

If you leave the top off the tank, when it's raining it could re-fill itself and save you some money in producing pure water.
Also, at that height you could turn your pump off when doing downstairs windows and just let it syphon out.

I thought for a minute, where's he gonna put his ladders and then I saw the ladderless sign, so you should be okay mate.

Do you think I could do the same thing with a moped?

Simon.

I think you should try straping one either side of the van- just to keep the balance right
then it doesn't matter what way you park the van ;D ;D

What is wrong with that??????

If matt wants to carry an extra 1000L's then so be it.

I would advise you on one thing, and thats to use bungee cords instead of a ratchet and strap.

At least if you break hard with the bungee's there will be a bit of play where as if you were to use a ratchet it would rip the bars clean off.

 ;D ;D ;D

Why not go all the way and stick a couple of gas canisters up there and make it thermo as well.  Just beware of flashing blue lights.

if you get one of those big fish tanks you could put it on your bonnet and carry water round cos you would still be able to see through it cos fish tanks are made of glass. you could secure it to your window wipers and it wouldn't go anywhere you could even put some fish in it like those tills they have in posh clothes shops  only you wouldn't be able to feed the fish cos the would pooh in water and then the tds would go up and the windows would have bits of fish pooh on them so dont feed them and when they go belly up uld just buy some new ones and claim them aganst your tax you could even sell the dead fish as cat food to your animal loveing customers, i suppose this would be another form of recylcinng , well they do say the possiblities are endless.

wish i'd have thought of that. probably better if you put the ibc the right way up. the best bit is that if you have a bump, the tank flies straight off and only breaks the roof bars rather than squashing you flat. ;).

nice one no need for a pump but how will you get into b and q

i have learned a special ttechnique, i have to drive quite quick, snatch the steering wheel and let the water slosh to one side, it puts me up on to 2 wheels then i manage to get in no problem, have had a few scuffs and close misses but no problems really

the biggest problem was when another one of our setups was coming out of b and q whilst we were coming in but thats another story
