I recieved a letter today from Data collection sevices it says that under the 1998 data protection act all new business,s have to pay £95 to them to register or risk a fine of up to £5000

 SOUNDS LIKE A CON TO ME                             no telephone no or web page

I had the same letter over 2 years ago filed as suggested, never heard another thing!!

I get one from the local authority bailiffs every month has been going on for over two years do the turn up no.

By the way I have not paid any thing ;D ;D

yes i had the same letter when i started up on my own it looks very official
i spoke to my local business link regarding this and they said leave it alone because it is a con i now get a letter every 3 or so months from the business link warning me of other scams operating

Sometimes I wonder what is the best thing to do with that type of thing. The bin is probably the best place but I wonder if these letters were passed on to the Police would it make any difference.

I belong to the Federation of Small Businesses.
They offer a good package of benefits and  monthly, a local and a national news letter etc.

They have a scam watch column and this data thing is regularly in it. They are not breaking the law as they are offering a service- albeit a bit misleading. If you need to register it costs £35 from the proper data people.

www.fsb.org.uk finds the Fed.
