Title: The Police have my name!
Post by: jeff1 on May 31, 2007, 10:55:47 pm
Never heard  of this form of advertising before,  But every police officer and community support officer, have a diary issued to them by the police authority ::)

To day I was approached  to take out an advert in there diary that will be issued to over 12,000 police and community support officers, any profit made will go to the police widow benevolent fund.

All police officers now have there own houses and not police houses, there are also lots of other business's that advertise in them, so may be of some help.
I will be the only W/C in the avon ans somerset police diary :o

Has anyone else heard of this form of advertising??????

There is one benefit I can see ;D If I get so drunk and cant find my way home, at least I can tell the officers to look in there diarys for my name address ;D ;D

You can now look forward to every 'charity' ringing you and begging for your help, some will even follow up months later and say you said you would advertise! Your name and number are now on a list that is sold to numerous dodgy money collecting schemes. Good luck!

I had a call a few years ago about going in the police diary.
But i didn't take them up as i don't think it will work that well

Had the same mate.

A bit pushy they were and told me the same.

I asked them for information as they phoned my whilst i was on a big clean so i could read it later.
The 1st thing i got through the post was an Invoice for over £200.

I e-mailed them about it and got a rather abrupt person phone me.

I had this last year from some company and had similar problems.

I already had that about 2 weeks ago,and never advertised with anyone except yellow pages, but the second word I use is off, when they say you said you would help us. I'm a bit older and wiser and can normally smell a rat.

But I do see, how you can see its a little suss, so what I'll do tomorrow, is the first copper police officer I see I'll ask him about the Diary.

My brother has just been accepted into the police. I told him he's a tos**r if he joins!
I was approached about the police diary ages ago and I told them  a big NO THANK-YOU!
I've paid my share of traffic fines donating to the police charity ;D

Its up to you but I would not do it. It is usually handled by a company from Liverpool way. I think they are called Vardis. If they think you are interested they will hassle you forever and so will every other form of advertising for charities. They also get rude and aggressive. I ended up telling one guy that if he thought he was so clever to come and find me! he didnt but in the end they left me alone.

Sounds like a poisoned chalice to me.  Over the years I have been ripped off for my money by no less than four coppers.  I may have been ripped off by four plumbers and four builders too but that doesn't get noticed so easily.  I also have some honest coppers on my books but I did start wondering about the "law unto themselves" bit before my faith was restored.  Important to take people as individuals rather than judging by profession I think.

I got a call yesterday from some company compiling a local authority advertising guide.  That definitely sound "suss" to me as they don't just go to some "guide" to get their quotes.  The caller told me that there were only going to be three entries under each heading.

SAVE YOUR MONEY.We advertised with them a few years ago never got one call. Its not actually the police force its a company asked by them to produce their dairies and a percentage of the advertising revenue goes to the different police funds.

I had them phone me in Feb this year. The usual stuff and £200 was mentioned I asked them to send me some info so I could find out a bit more and heard nothing until about 3 weeks ago when they phoned asking for the money! The chap insisted that I booked an advert in November but I told him I never, and as yet I have not heard back from them.

It is not a scam
There are lots of people on hear that appear very Anti- Police
Why Is That ??
There are not enough of them to do the job properly and it is all
down to money and politics.
I am not interested in the politics as it bores the pants off me.
My view is that all politicians are as bad as each other-they just have different reasons.
The Diaries are standard for most Police Forces and the advertising is genuine and have local companies for that area.
I am not saying they are a good idea for shiners to advertise in (I don't)
but they are certainly NOT A SCAM!
but it does grip me when it turns into a Police slagging off
when really it has very little to do with the state of our Police Forces.
Trust me I know!

Russ, beleive me it is a scam. I used to work in the industry, its not run or controlled by the police. im not going into the politics of it on here, but beleive me, its a scam.

Vardis btw, was investigated by the daily mirror a couple of weeks ago, and the owner used to own barrington house in ormskirk.

James E James in liverpool have the publications for the emergency services, and there main office is in dale street, with another in warrington just of off bewsey lane!

A "publishers" called fullertons, was investigated by the manchester evening news about 4 yrs ago. The owners were both given 5 yrs, and where earning 2.5k per week!

I remember it well cos all the staff that had to leave there came and worked for me!!  was happy days then..lol

But anyone who is contacted by any "charity" selling ads, dont do it. Other offices ask for the diaries or wallplanners that the other charities sent them, pay for a courier to pick them up (we used to spend around £500 on courier pick ups for our leads per month) then call the advertisers saying.......

"Do you remember we spoke and you said you where helping the ..... charity? > you said to give you a call back in a couple of months and said you would be more than happy to help the kids in ....(our) charity!!!

So there you go, buyer beware!!!

This will go on forever and a day!!

it certainly doesnt sound like a scam, but my sussex police diary doesnt have ads in it, it just has the unions number.

and yeah ive also noticed that a few people on here enjoy slaggin off the police, most of the time i cant even be bothered to argue.

Mick,
I had this happen to me couple of weeks ago, saying what you stated, I knew I hadn't said anything of the sort, and I know my boss wouldn't have said it, so straight away I knew it was a scam.
I can't print on the forum what I said to the bloke on the other end, but my last word was off and I then hung up. ::)

I was only going for the Police Diary, for the extra little advertising and to help the police widows.

Wake up lads! There are dozens of these companies nearly all based in either Manchester or Liverpool for some reason. They are scamsters who run a variety of schemes most of which never come to fruition, firemens benevolent fund, police diaries as mentioned, fire safety booklets for local schools etc etc etc.
Don't waste your hard earned money. Stick to established advertising methods and don't waste your money. This also goes for pub/restuarant menus, estate agent guide books, european city guides, council planning brochures. They are all crap and you'd be lucky to get a few leads off any of them.

I've no problem with honest cops.  Only with dishonest ones.  Like you say, the advertising offered isn't a scam.  I do have reservations about how widely read it might be though and therefore would probably be a poor way to advertise.
PS.  I've seen some pretty disgraceful things done by police and I've seen good things done too.
