Title: shoulder pain??
Post by: Dave Turley on May 30, 2007, 01:47:29 pm
even though my round is mostly semi's etc, i'm getting a little shoulder pain which is starting to concern me a bit. i'm taking cod liver oil and glucosamine (good for cartalidge but it's getting gradually worse).

only use an unger opti-loc pole 95% of the time, and occasionally a tele-plus and do some trad as well.

just wondered if it comes with the job?          ???

I was experiencing shoulder pain a while ago.  I am left handed and the pain was in my right shoulder.  I have resolved it by switching to a much lighter pole and making my legs do more of the work rather than my arms.  The pain started off as a tingly feeling and gradually got worse.  It's much better now.
The pole I am now using is an 18ft Extender.  I believe it is fibre glass but seems really light when compared to the pole I was previously using.  They seem pretty basic as poles go and are quite cheap and I've no idea how long it will last.  However, even if I have to change it twice a year, that is far better than having possible permanent shoulder damage.

Dave,
I will stick a link to the Back Pages, of another forum that has bits of info, over on Matts DIY site, I have had a frozen shoulder and advise you to seek professional help now, get some 2kg weights for arm excercise and maybe try  pain killers at weekends when your resting and Rosehip syrup concentrated.

I also suffer with a little shoulder and arm ache i have been taking severn seas joint care tablets and cod liver oil, but doesnt seem to get any better so ive took advice from Andy wcs a member on here and bought some Arnica tablets.  Ive also bought some Arnica massage balm you can get them from Holland and Barratt i'll just have to see if they work

Or you could just put it down to old age  ;D

Two of our teah are eating two small tins of Mackeral or pilchards in a spicey tomato sauce - from Sainsburys, tescos or Somerfields.

I am one of tyhe two and have had arthritis in both shoulders for years - no problems at all - and it tastes great

Gr8 take it seriously  8) if its hot get some help/advice. The cod liver will help with deep joint probs but may take 6 months to get there, the RSI type pains are usually caused by ligament damage. The shoulder is the   m o s t   complicated joint of the body.
Get the lightest equipement you can afford.
When using a wfp try to keep your injured shoulder hand below your waist by using a slightly longer pole- to keep movement to a minimum, dont use one thats too short and have to lift both arms in a stretch above the base  of your rib cage

Arnica! That's the bugger I was thinking of!

Apparently it's very good.
Might use some Arnica gel on my back.

Shoulders are fine, but I usually do about 500 press-ups a week, so they're used to it. ;D

We are all too busy cleaning the glass to realise that we are standing in an un-natural  position doing repetative movements with our arms and shoulders. No wonder we get trouble.
I got neck pain when I started but now I try to hold the pole much lower down, almost waist height so I am not having to lift the weight  of my arms as well as the pole .

hmmm.... seems sort of common with us lot then.

thanks for the ideas    :)

jeff, my arms and shoulders are quite strong due to a fair bit of weight training when i was younger (probably hasn't helped the joints)

also it's my right shoulder which is the one i keep lower when on the pole.

it's just like a sharp pain when i move it in a certain way, inside the shoulder, not the muscle... nearly dropped my ladders last month as i was lifting them up and over an extension!

does this sound like what you had before you developed your frozen shoulder?

off to look at arnica on the zipvit website...............

Serious. Have done for years.
Lost a lot of strength with that 5 week injury though.
Getting back into it again now, and I can handle work no problem.

I find my wheelchair tends to move about a bit when it's really windy and I can't hold my pole and zimmer frame at the same time anymore. ::)
