Title: this will make you laugh or cry
Post by: buzz06 on May 29, 2007, 11:55:43 am
hi .....turned up for my 1st jobs this morning nice row of council houses & ive got most of them so no loading/unloading wfp hassle.
there were a couple of lads setting up to clean/ empty the gutters facias etc
"mornin lads" says i " im the window cleaner"
"fine work away, were sub contracting for the council"
then i watched them start to work OFF A COUPLE OF LADDERS !!!NO ONE EVEN  FOOTING THEM
"hang on" says i "aint you guys heard of temp working at heights etc especially working for the council"
"yeah weve heard of it but they want a cheap price & dont care how we do it"

B***** GREAT.. WHY DID I SPEND ALL THAT MONEY ON WFP WHEN THE PEOPLE
WHO ARE MEANT TO ENFORCE THE LAW CHOOSE TO IGNORE IT  THEMSELVES!!!

tempted to report the council to the council...no hold on i think that would probably be a waste of time lol  ;D  >:(

i think its not worth getting involed. Leave it to them.
Sometimes it can be safe enough not to be footed when cleaning out gutters. it all depends on the wind, the ground surface and the level, slope of the ground.

I think some forum members on hear are way, way over the top with H&S. Its almost like- " i've spent such & such on a wfp so i must now prove to the whole world that nobody else should be working off ladders".
Get a life & keep your nose out are two things that spring to mind!

I 'm not trying to be clever at all but i'm wfp & trad, & to be honest as far as i'm concerned the letters H&S could just be replaced with COMMON SENSE. there's nothing unsafe about using ladders properly & if someone else falls off them then thats tough, i certainly would not stick my nose into anyone else using them. ladders will always be here, they're needed for all kinds of jobs/industry.

I think some wfp'ers would just love ladders to be banned for the sole reason that it would make wfp a total solution & not just an extra tool like it is in most cases now, and also they would not need to come up with miriads of excuses as they do now to compensate for wfp's downsides. I also think some feel that their work is still threatend by trad cleaners. It's like they are hiding behind H&S.

I was going to say something similar Tony, but you've prety much said it. I'm not WFP yet but I agree with your sentiments. Ladders have long been used for window cleaning and to do jobs like that mentioned above and provided that the right ladders for the job are used, they haven't become less safe because of H&S regs as some would have us believe.

In the few days we've been w.f.p the main concern of the customers seem to be: Are frames wiped : Reaching awkward windows and 'not stepping on fragile tiles.
H&S has never been mentioned...either by me or the customer.

in the start i said it was H&S issues why i have got the pole system

now its just, all your frames get cleaned, i can reach awkward windows and most of all it does a better job

i never mention H&S unless they are having a proper proper winge

you do your job and they can do theirs  ;)

Hi Tony.

For some but not me. I'm wfp & have been for 18 months, if some one wants to work off ladders thats up to them. I'm 40 now & there is no way i could do it anymore  :o.

H&S has gone well over the top & i think the common sence mode has been lost.

Ladders is the only alternative for the majority of new window cleaners starting with very little money. How they value their safety when established is their choice!

wise words macc, i'm not at all suggesting that h&s should be totaly dismissed but rather - put into perspective more.
If given the option of being tooled up with either h&s or common sense i'd choose the latter any day.
