Title: Websites- do they make you look pro?
Post by: TennetClean on May 18, 2007, 09:02:08 am
I am thinking of getting a website, really just because I want one!  Just wondering, you fellas on here that have websites, do you get much work from them, and in your opinion is it worth the bother?

Everything seems to be done online these days, as I'm going to be after more commercial work, (at the moment I only do houses) I wonder if it wold make me appear to be a more pro outfit - if you know what I mean.

I dont mind paying for something decent, but not if there's no point!

Mike

ive had a website since i started, it got me NO work at all

though its handy to accept payments via paypal and nochex

does it make you look more pro

NO

why, as any1 can make a website using the many templates available online ( just edit a few details and you are done )
the cost is 10 quid a year for hosting, so imho it doesnt make you more pro

Well i must say mine has helped, and you only need one page, but you wont lose out if you dont have one, if you in retail then you need one yes,  but as matt said great for card payments

if you want one then have one, but it can be time consumeing if your not carefull. and make sure you know the full cost.

let us know how it goes

Taking payments from your website, what a great idea!  That would come in very handy.  More I think about it the more I like the idea.  I would never have thought of that.

I'm on a course next month hopefully so I'll speak to other people there and see if anyone there has a website too.  I'm after something simple but pro looking, I dont think it would cost very much, but I dont mind paying for a good site.

Matt, can I see your website, I think I need some inspiration.

Cheers!

I have picked up quite a few conservatory and gutter cleaning jobs from it.

Great for explaining all your other services.

I also have Paypal and Nochex payment options on it which are getting more and more popular these days with new customers

how do you get doing paypal through your site? and how did you get  the customers to do this

i wouldnt mind the paypal charge, as i pay for envelopes and stamps anyway. so if i stopped that then it would work out around the same

sign upto paypal and under the payment/merchant links you will have a few "buttons" to choose, click on the 1 you like and paypal gives you the code to insert into your website

right, ive just been though the process and listed it below

log in

merchant tools ( from the top menu )

Website Payments Standard ( from left H menu )

Next step: Learn how to integrate Website Payments Standard. ( from the middle text bit )

now under the blue boxs it says  "Or, customise your solution."

now click on "Buy now buttons"

Now i allways add the words " WINDOW CLEANING" as Item name / service

leave everything else black

choose a different button ( chose the 1 you like )

then right at the bottom is " create button now"

then you will have the code to insert into your website

i done that, so that just gives a logo with what cards are accepted, and then they click on it and see why use paypal

now i have worked out how to do the pay pal thing, theres a pay now button that i put on my site, it takes them straight to paypal, under my paypal account, there is an amount to enter for them, but how do i know whos who, someone had a go for me and it brought up his own address, but what if they pay on a different acount? is there a thing where they can add notes?

you will normally get eh address of paypal with the e.mail to say they have paid

i allways add under the paypal pay now button
"PLEASE ADD YOUR NAME IN THE INFO BOX "

they then add there name in the box and its all good

Only job I can attribute to my website was someone from this forum having a look who's brother lived on my round.  It does look good to stick it on your van and business cards though.  I think you can pay google to direct people to your site from certain key words.

If you can do it yourself it's dirt cheap.  Have web hosting with talk talk already pay for that, used a program on my computer (iweb on mac) and the name cost 6.10 for 2 years.

Simon

I wouldn't have paid a lot of money for one though.

when you get a e.mail to say you have money, it will normally include a address, if not, just e.mail the person who sent the money, keep a note of that address so you knwo the next time :)

but i am sure just before they click on "PAY" you have a box for " extra info "

Websites can be very expensive and I don't think you will ever earn back what you paid out unless you get lucky! I know people that have paid £700 + for a small website which I could have done for them!
To be fair though, it can take a while to make a site from scratch so maybe the fee is understandable!
But, i think a website for your business is pretty useful, especially if you do commercial work, and as already said, online payments can be very handy!
If anyone would like to make their own site and need some help or want me to make them a site for a hell of a lot less than you would find from a professional web designer, then send me an email or visit my site.
