Don't quote me on this but I think the guidelines are 15 mins every four hours.  Having said that I do allow my staff a 10 min break every 2 to 3 hrs when doing a full shift.  If they are working a 2 to 3 hr shift then finish they don't get a break.

Hi

I thought it was 1/2 an hour in every 8 hours?

I like to whip them until I think they are moving fast enough, then boot them occassionally just so they don't slack or get complacent. If they want a fAg I hound them with 'COME ON, COME ON ' FASTER, SMOKE IT IN TWO DRAGS!!!

Then I keep swearing at them, insult them and then think about how I can get away without paying them or on the outside offer them £1 p/h.

Seems to work a treat!  ;D

The law is you can work up to 4 hours without a break. Then it's 20 minutes for anything over 4 hours or 30 minutes on an 8 hour shift.

This is a minimum requirement. You can give more if you want. Also you are not entitled to be paid for the break. Therefore if someone works 8.5 hours with a half hour break, you only pay them for 8. Again, you can pay them for their breaks if you want, but that's up to you. Personally I don't pay my staff for breaks, but that is probably because I don't have any staff.  ???

Hope that helps.

Brian.

thanks for that, I ask because one of my dom cleans is for 4 hours which I just get on with it, after 3 I'm  usually gasping for a drink. Other half says I should have a ten min break but I feel like I'm cheating them out of their money if I stop.

I can only go by what I know when I worked in retail. I would assume you would be allowed to get a drink at anytime though, same as going to the loo or anything. No one should begrudge you a 2 minute natural break.
