Hi
I know we aren't all tax inspectors or accountants, but just wanted some advice regarding payroll and income tax.

First pay for new employee, many chances to provide p46, didn't return it in time or show that it was going to be returned at all.

Payday comes and payroll package says BR due to no p45/p46 and income tax is deducted.

Employee kicking off as didn't want to be taxed obviously, and only done 12 hrs this month.

As I understand I've done this correctly as code BR is to be used if new employee earns over £4.00 per month.

I try to follow the rules on everything, but the employee has meade me doubt myself due to her attitude now towards me.

Am I in the right?

if you have no p45 or p60 then yes you have to base rate them even though they only worked a few hours which would be below the tax threshold if you do not have a p45 or p60 you have no proof other than their word that they are not already using their tax free allowance in an alternative employment.

Hi,

Emplyees problem not yours, she /he should have returned the requested p46/p45, what else can you do.

Sounds like you have done everything you should have.

thank you both for your replies, just needed some reassurance that i hadnt bodged it up.

she has decided that she doesnt want to continue working for us, but says she has definatly done more hours than what i have paid her ( which she hasnt) and she would be taxed even more! she hasnt thought that far ahead i dont think.
shes very upset but she was a bit funny about giving me any details in the first place and said she has never filled in a p46 in other jobs and never been taxed (shes on benefits and only allowed to work for £20 per week apparently).

Anyway, i'll write to her to say if she has any questions to contact tax office and they will explain it.

ive learned a lesson, dont take on part time staff on benefits !

i am processing her final pay, how do i do the holiday pay entitlement? part time and pro rata

shes worked a total of 14 hours in the last 6 weeks, how do i calculate that?

did you get paid from the guy who was holding out on you, did you take him to the small claims court?

hi

he paid in the end after some negotiating.

we discounted half a visit on good will, but he was still arguin that the job and hours weren't completed to standard etc when we did all we could in the time allowed.

feel sorry for the poor sod cleaning there now, he didnt like our letter and said it was aggressive and un called for, i think he saw us as an easy target, but we stuck to our guns.  ;D

nice one,

probably a good compromise in the end to get it resolved.

sounds like your letter put the wind up him tho! he might think twice before pulling that stunt on someone else.
