Title: WFP and aching hands?
Post by: SherwoodCleaningSe on May 11, 2007, 08:06:15 am
Has any body found that using wfp makes their hands ache.

I have a mate who's been at it about 3 months and it looks like he's got symptoms of repetitive strain injury (RSI) in his right hand all ready.

And my left hand aches a bit and clicks weird I know, just wondered if it's down to wfp.

Simon.

Yep, it's doing funny things to my hands too.

I'm hoping it's just because I'm getting used to it. :-\

Mine ached a fair bit at first too but seem a lot better lately.  I think I've adjusted the way I work to compensate for it.
To help with hand ache it might help to work as follows.  I realise this is not possible on all windows but maybe try holding the pole in a different manner.

The hand you use for lower down the pole, try using it as a "cup" to rest the base of the pole on.  The upper hand, try just using it as a guide rather than a gripper.  This way, you will not need to grip the pole much with either hand.  Try, where reasonably practical, to ensure that vertical movement of the brush on the glass is achieved by leg power i.e. walking back and forth rather than moving arms up and down.

I know, I know.  It's easy to say and great in theory.  I catch myself constantly using excessive arm motion because it seems quicker and have to force myself to power from the legs.
Also, keep your poles as light as possible - hopefully without breaking the bank.

Hands fine, left forearm aches a bit, shoulders and neck killed me for the first month. Learnt to slow down and relax and not to chase the money. Also refined my kit so I have the lightest possible and now find it pretty easy. :)

Now I'm going to assume that you are right handed.  I'm left handed and my right shoulder started messing me about several months ago.  It started off by being tingly and gradually worsened.  It's much better since I switched to a far lighter pole.  Also, I try to avoid lifting my right arm up so high when I'm guiding the pole - sometimes even working one handed.  I'm in the process of experimenting to find the most comfortable way of working.  I suppose being 50 doesn't help either.

I know what your talking about,if your right handed with your left hand make sure that it`s palm facing down when your holding the pole ie not cupping the pole,if you cup the pole you`ll notice that your wrist is in an awkward position and over time can give serious wrist ache.I also had painful hands and found that it was a combination of not being relaxed and using poles that were to heavy, when using the superlite i have no problems at all but on the whole i think it just a case of getting used to it,i used to get more back ache with using ladders.I used to go to the oteopath and he used to say that because i had the ladder on my right shoulder day in day out my right hip and back muscles were notted up,it used to feel like my hips wern`t in a straight line.No pain no gain.

Squeaky buy a superlite, you`ll find you can do a better job cos you can scrub the glass till you hearts content. There`s 0 effort with one and it`s so easy to rinse of the glass, using one of these poles aches and pains will go just make sure you buy a desent brush for it.

Oh definately.

I changed to pole work because washing and squeegeeing took it's toll.

I know this is only a reprieve.
WFP will get me in the end too.

Hopefully by then there'll be another new method to try!

Yes maybe remote controlled robots and we can just stay at home.
