If company's can put through their books private health care, business lunch, child care for working mums, etc.. can we as sole traders put these through our books.
I would like to have my own private health care and also cannot see why I cannot put through child care through my books. Before anyone says speak to your accountant I do my books myself.
Does anyone put perks through the books for themsleves.
Cheers

These days the tax man is getting very awkward about "perks" and definately wants his pound of flesh! Start putting things like that down and he'll be at your throte mate :o :o
My advise is GET A GOOD ACCOUNTANT ;) ;) ;)
As my accountant says when he asks me why such and such is entered in the books
"Rather me than the Tax Man ask you theses questions ;)"

I used to sell private medical insurance and the rules at the time were that you needed a group of three to make a company plan and this could be husband/wife = 2 and a worker aged 16 plus (son/daughter?) made the 3rd.
I did know of sole traders who claimed for a personal pmi plan saying they wouldn't have it unless they were self employed. My advice was speak to an accountant. You could try the tax office but does that put you on their radar?
Watch out for exclusions - that chest pain you went to the GP about four years ago may well - in the eyes of the insurer - be the root cause of your need for a by-pass next year and thus be excluded!

I would put it through your books but put the tax money you save in savings account and don't touch it. That way should the tax man question it and ask for a review, you can pay the money if they wont let you get away with it, if they dont your better off for it.

The company I work for now takes payments for these thing out of our wages for us before we are taxed on our gross pay. Apparently this is now allowed by the tax office.
